Daisy Werthan (Jessica Tandy), an elderly Jewish widow living in Atlanta, is determined to maintain her independence. However, when she crashes her car, her son, Boolie (Dan Aykroyd), arranges for her to have a chauffeur, an African-American driver named Hoke Colburn (Morgan Freeman). Daisy and Hoke's relationship gets off to a rocky start, but they gradually form a close friendship over the years, one that transcends racial prejudices and social conventions.

Yes, this movie certainly feels longer than it's actual run time. But the story moves, and I never felt bored by this movie. I lost my own mother two months ago. I am just now getting back the courage to watch this movie again.

Thank you for sharing this movie out. I tell you… getting to understand and except the getting older…. Realizing this is our future of NOT BEING ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES…. Especially when No One Will Look After You in a GOOD WAY…. I have no idea what I’m going to do ♥️

The book she gave him was a cursive writing book. It was used to practice hand writing. I recall using one in the 60's.

I was 17 when a few of my siblings and I went to watch this cool movie. So well written and well acted. In my opinion, it definitely deserved the best movie award. The 1980s had such an eclectic collection of great movies.

Jessica Tandy was a legendary stage actor. She was the original Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire (by famed playwright Tennessee Williams) starring alongside an up and coming Marlon Brando. But she was blacklisted as a Communist sympathizer during the radical rightwing McCarthy era in the 1950s (or “red scare” as it is sometimes called), so she wasn’t allowed by the studio to play Blanche in the film version. Vivian Leigh took over the role of Blanche. (Leigh was already a legend since her starring role as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind, 1939). Tandy and her husband Hume Cronyn were magnificent actors. The world lost decades of brilliant work they could have and should have produced during those blacklisted years due to rightwing extremism and censorship. They both made comebacks in the 1980s and are featured together in the wonderful 1988 film Cocoon, just a year before Driving Miss Daisy. You should watch that one sometime. An early Steven Spielberg classic.

Very good reaction and edit. I hope that you choose to react to Morgan Freeman's other big hit from 1989, Lean On Me.

I saw this movie around the time it came out on HBO. It was highly recommended and I was not disappointed 💙 Thank you from acknowledging BHM, you are one of the few reactors who did. May I make some suggestions- Hidden Figures, The Help, Green Book, Cadillac Records, Malcolm X, Race, Judas & the Black Messiah, Loving, Just Mercy, 42, Harriett, 12 Years a Slave

You can see a young Morgan Freeman on kids TV show called The Electric Company from the 1970's. And Ron Howards film "Cocoon" is another good Jessica Tandy film.

The celebrity with Mayo in her hair is a thing lol I have used mayonnaise as a hair mask. Usually I use vinegar tho, makes it soft and shiny just like he was talking about. That's a trick from the old days, my grandmother used to do it and I carried through life cause it works. When you have as much hair as I do you need all the tricks and help you can get, but I do understand people laughing at the idea of putting kitchen items on the hair , and thinking a rich person would do so is downright hilarious, but they used to.

What makes this movie is the story of friendship, genuine friendship, that developed between Hoke and Miss Daisy despite the immorality of racism, classicism, and the backwards idea that people of different backgrounds can't be friends. The fact is we are one human family, one human race with the same flesh and same blood ... Human flesh and blood! This story shows what can happen when we see each other as members of our single human family instead of other fictional races. We have more in common than we have in differences. Miss Daisy and Hoke connected on that level and ceased being "them" to each other and became "us", friends through every season of life. That makes the story beautiful and important. Kudos to you for paying attention to a key element in this story that most reactors miss. This isn't a story about a "white" racist and "black" victim of racism as if it were just the same ole story. Rather Miss Daisy was Jewish and experienced anti-semitism (racism) just as Hoke was without recognizing her own attitudes toward Hoke. That irony is important and critical to the story. Most reactors miss that irony and see the movie a little too simplistically. And we do see her attitude change, eventually, and this is what is so beautiful. People can change. There IS hope.

You’re quick becoming my favorite reactor. I love this movie and I loved your reaction. I agree five out of five. Jessica Tandy… Another great movie I think you’d like is Alfred Hitchcock‘s The Birds. She plays a fairly big role in that. I hope you react to it!! I first saw it on TV in the 70s when I was preteen. Scared me so bad that I had nightmares for a long time ha ha. it’s a great movie though.

This is one of the best movies ever made, fortunately it was violence free and had little racism, if you are looking for a more realistic take then try the 1988 movie Mississippi Burning set in 1964, excellent cast and well done but warning it does get graphic, thanks for this reaction bro.

And women, especially old women care more than anybody on the planet what other people think. Women in general make most of their decisions, based on what their friends and other people think. They decide if a man is handsome, or if clothes look good, based on what their friends think. Men and women are different. I know recent sentiments says different, but we are so different and it’s beautiful. I love this movie. Thanks for the entertainment, sir.
