I have a 2005 ford explorer. I always turn the traction control off when I'm on a slippery or icy where ever I'm at. And it gets me to work and back home like a normal day. Drive safe everyone and God Bless

Principally traction control is designed to keep the vehicle going straight and to avoid spin-out/slides by applying differential force to wheels that star to spin. It's not to provide traction or better grip. Your tyres do that. As the video shows, once traction control is off, the wheels take the force of the engine and spin until they find grip. If you ever get stuck in snow next to a curb and traction control is on, you won't get out. Turn it off and you will

And do keep it of for the rest of your trip?

@@fubub3595 Keep it on all the time when driving. Tuning it off if you happen to get stuck in snow, mud, sand, or on ice, can give just enough traction to get you out

This film shows a few minutes from my dash cam when I get stuck in the snow. Traction control seems to be hindering me. Admittedly I am driving a big front wheel drive automatic on summer tyres. I spoke to a friend who has a rear wheel drive, also automatic and he says his car is worse in the snow with the traction control off. I have only driven 4x4s with AT tyres in snow before and I am confused by all this. Comments please!

Just found this in the handbook: When TCS is on and you attempt to free the vehicle when it is stuck, or drive it out of freshly fallen snow, the TCS will activate.Depressing the accelerator will not increase engine power and freeing the vehicle may be difficult. When this happens, turn off the TCS.

Traction/stability control is one of the best safety system on cars with ABS. It's actually really helpful on snow/ice. Especially if you're in a situation where you loose grip on one traction wheel by braking it and sending power to the wheel that has traction. That's also the situation where you're the most likely to skid and stability control will help you. But, in some rare case, it can be helpful do turn it off to start on snow. It should be turned back on as soon as possible!

Traction control is what made me crash my 09 escape. I got into a slide and it cut off my power and braking inputs so I couldnt get my car to power out of an avoidable situation. It gets scary when you realize your car takes away control when you need it most

With traction control off. It's better . Plus with my Audi S5 it puts 60 percent power to the rear and 40 up front. I can get donuts and drift corners , if I want to.
