Driving round Stourbridge Ring Road when it first opened

This is the final section of the video footage from 1969, driving round the ring road when it first opened. some parts look much the same as they do today but it is interesting to see some of the old buildings that have long gone, and the cars!

I remember going that ring round when it was first finished. We were going on holiday from Birmingham to Wales. We went round about 3 times before my Dad found the Bridgenorth road. We never went that way again.

Ringroad stopped the town from growing,stunted and killed it.Traffic flows well now around a lot of charity shops with beggars in doorways

You're probably right. I don't know Stourbridge well but on the occasions I drive through, it occurs to me that the ring road itself probably takes up the same area in squares metres as the town centre itself! I think that's the first impression of most visitors. A huge four lane road encircling a handful of streets. Someone really didn't think it through very well. A simple bypass would have worked better for a small town.

I had not realised that the Ring Road from Birmingham Street to Worcester Street was only 2 lanes (not 3) in 1969.

This is strourbridges own mini concrete collar to match the one in brum but worse. If they had the forethought to build this underground then pedestrians would be able to freely get in and out of town centre without risking life and limb. Why did they always make public toilets underground in the 60’s?

In 2021, it is no surprise that so many buildings have been demolished and new ones built, both close to the ringtone (oops Ring road) and also slightly further away.

Wow. This is amazing to watch. The traffic lights and the bus stop near the crystal leisure centre arent there yet. Its amazing to see my home town way before I was around, as Im only 21.
