Stourbridge: Where I grew up

This is a quick tour of Stourbridge - a town near Birmingham, in England. Before we moved to Australia I grew up here, so I thought I'd torture my wife and daughter by dragging them round some of my old haunts.
Join us as we take in such delights as the alley where I smoked during school breaks and the leisure centre where I projectile vomited over my mate's head into a bush after an underage drinking session.

I was at OSH 1971-1978 and we used to smoke Player's number 6 in the same alleyway. Nabbed by a copper once who gave us a ticking off and sent us on our merry way. Good to see you kept up the tradition!

I was at KEGS. My Dad moved with his job and I boarded at OSH in late 74 to summer 75 to finish my O Levels. I hated it.

Born and bred. Born at wordsley hospital (now houses), grew up in the old quarter, went to greenfield primary the Redhill secondary. It was an amazing place to be a kid in the 80's and 90's! Recently moved out to Shropshire though as it's changed dramatically. Crime rates are some of the worst in the borough and I didn't want my kids worrying about being stabbed hanging round Mary Stevens park at night! Best choice I've ever made moving away.

One of the best Towns in the Uk. Did a Graphic design course hear in 88 it has a really good town with some cool shops, pubs, restaurants. I miss those days of going to waitrose for doughnuts and then shipleys arcade, followed by an afternoon of art and designing. Clent hills being just down the road and the huge hall by it, Stourbridge was the first real introduction to Me on how good a town can be and will stay with me forever with great memory's. +zark212 thank you. Sounds like you might have studied at King Ed's College. There's still a good art course going there. The Bridge does indeed have a lot going for it, the proximity to Clent being one of many. Like many provincial towns it's had its ups and downs over the years, but it's still a decent place.

The building was directly opposite the eddys College I think they have done it into residential Homes lately, It was a fantastic building with so many different rooms and creative atmosphere. Stourbridge is so cool in Winter with the unique gifts and shops, Plan on a visit this saturday bro and have alook round town and will check the info on the art course, Thats superb. :))

+zark212 have fun in the Bridge mate. Miss the old Crown Centre with all the market traders. They got rid of that. Good music scene still going from what I've heard. Stourbridge has a rich history with The Wonderstuff, Ned's Atomic Dustbin etc back in the day.

Thank you mate . :)) The Crown centre oh wow I remember that wow that was an epic place to grab some real baragians and unique things even today with ebay and such they have nothing like we had. Good call on Music Scene bro absolutely. I heard that Pop will eat itself also came from Stourbridge. I remember the mark and Moodys art shop and that small gallery they had inside. Also Boots, The computer shop above the tailors on lower high street, waitrose, Shipleys arcade where they had R-type machine, Wh smith, Our price , Woolworths , Firkins cake store. I like the design of the high street which has many alleys leading to cool shops. :)

Ah, Stourbridge - grew up there from about 1969 to 1988. The place is indelibly imprinted on my mind, naturally. So many memories… The pubs were ace! There were so many of them back then. The Waterloo in Wollaston (long gone sadly), was my main port of call during the early to mid 80’s, but there were many others that were frequented. To paraphrase a comment on the hoo ha about Stourbridge being the best place to live in the west Miglandz - “Stourbridge runs through me like a stick of Rock”…

I lived in Pedmore so about 66/67 to 1975. Went to KEGS which is now a 6th form college having done away with Grammar School. I followed Stourbridge FC in one of their golden periods when they got to Welsh Cup Final and lost to Cardiff home and away.

went to KEGS in the 70s. Lived in and also went Pedmore C of E School. At Kegs we weren't allowed out at lunchtime; we used to nip out to the chippy round the corner. Was an avid fan of Stourbridge FC who had a decent team at that time. Probably well before your time but great memories including cycling up the hill from KEGS to Pedmore

I was born and bred in the Stourbridge and Amblecote area and moved to Sydney many years ago . Still miss Stourbridge and the Black Country , the community and camaraderie I haven’t found in Australia sadly . I still consider Stourbridge as home and visit usually on a yearly basis . I know what you been. I’ve been in Australia for over a decade and feel a similar way to you. There are plenty of lovely places here and lots of great people to make friends with but home is home and that’s often where you grew up. Unfortunately we don’t get to visit as often as you. Did you ever consider moving back? I have, but I suspect it wouldn’t be the same. The UK has changed and so have I. Plus I wouldn’t want to give up the lifestyle in Australia!

Tom Edwards .Hi Tom . You and I are very typical of ex pat Brits , it’s just that not many will admit their feelings . We are all different in our aspirations and family ties , and it’s the family thing that hurts me the most . My Mum is 91 yrs old , I’m her next of kin as I have no Dad and sibling , and with the Covid 19 restrictions find that I can’t visit her because of Australian government regulations , I find that almost impossible to cope with . We have 6 grandkids in Australia , and those little 6 people are are only reason we stay here . Nice to speak to you to you Tom , all my best wishes .

Apparently there was an awesome music scene in Stourbridge during the 80s. Bit before my time though. The Tap House was my local, along with the Mitre, Seven Stars and the Crown. Ha, lots of pubs!

Duuude i love the crystal lesuire center,i go swimming and then go to the tesco opposite and get some crap to eat. Bondi on Friday is sick aswell.I also think Salt and vinegar by king edwards is pretty good. The sopranos across from the lesuire center is a Taste now which is weird.(this is the last time i edit this but)I kinda found it weird that you took that route to merry hill,i usually go past the tip by the BP

Was interested to see Stourbridge as my grandmother was born there even though I never knew her as she died when I was a baby, so I was telling my kids about her, so it was an education to see it for us all. Her maiden name was Pargitter.

Indeed it is. It was a nice town to grow up in. Not too big, not too small and well located near the city and countryside. I moved to Kidderminster as a teenager and never liked it as much. One whole I'd say the West Midlands is an underrated place to live and the people are smashing, salt of the earth types. Definitely worse places to call home!

When I made this video it had been something like 10 years since I'd last visited Stourbridge. When I was a kid there wasn't even a huge Tesco in the town centre. There used to be a market with lots of independent traders - butchers, cobblers and the like. Now that's gone I wonder if the 'Bridge has lost some of its character. I suppose nothing stays the same forever though. You've got to move with the times 😀

+Tom Edwards It's lost most of its character I feel. Its mostly now comprised of charity shops and coffee shops. Maybe its just an aspect of getting older but stourbridge had a real alternative feel to it, now tracksuit bottoms and a fleece are compulsory garments..
