If you needed to be in the left lane when turning into hardwick road, could you not go straight into the left? Instead of going through the lights into the middle lane then merging?

It all depends on what you want. If the left lane’s queue is long and you are in a hurry, you can join the shorter right lane queue and go faster as long as you are driving safe and legal. Hope this helps. That was the case in this video. Safe and legal is the watch word.
