Driving the 1973 VW bug home

thanks for responding. I have a 76 std bug and the windshield fresh air fan is over the radio as well, but their is no warning light there. That's why i was inquiring

My dad has a yellow 1973 Volkswagen 1300 Beetle. He had it since 2000 or before 2006. He used to have an orange 1974 Volkswagen Beetle but sold it in 1995 after it got a really bad dent. Whoever caused that dent has no life. My dad’s ‘73 Bug has lately had wheel baring problems and earlier had to have a new 12 volt battery after the old one ran out. They are my favourite cars and I hope I can get one when I pass my drivers licence if they don’t ban fuel cars.

I grew up in San Antonio at a time in the late '60's when V-Dubs were all over the place! Wish I would have held on to my '67.

+John Echterhoff Thats so wild!! I was living in Virginia when they got this car and then moved to Austin TX where I bought my VW bug from San Antonio. Small world after all :) It was allot easier to find a good solid bug in TX compared to my search in Virginia. Seemed like they were all eaten up with rust back in VA

thanks. I wasn't sure. My 76 bug has a fresh air fan knob above the radio. The brake warning light is to the right of the odometer and left of the radio

Few other cars have the personality of the original beetle. I drove and loved a '76 standard beetle through high school and into college and had to sell him to a friend as he was no longer reliable transportation. I have a'78 convertible now that I love as my fun car, but man I wish I had my old '76 back.

I think it came on because the car stalled. the card needed to be rebuilt so anytime you let off the gas it would shut off. Thats why they got me to drive it since it was so hinky lol

@eviltig so funny. I had a '72 VW Bug. It had moments when it didn't run right, but once it was fixed up right and by the right kind of mechanic, it was awesome.

@1VETaLEK2 2500 or 3000 I cant remember exactly. I did have a guy stop by today about doing a job for him welding and he said he had a 1970 VW bug he would give me (lol) so Im waiting to find out about that. He says it runs and everything and minor rust but we'll see

We have a short video of the first drive of the bug after being "awakened" from about 12 years of dormancy. Cleaned out the carb, stuck in a battery, and rigged up a gas tank to replace the rusty one (now being rehabbed). Just look for the "Gretl Bug (1964 Beetle) RUNS!" video here on KZbin on our Wephaus channel...hubby is driving it around the yard-- I'm the one making the emotional comments!LOL!

This video is pretty old and I am still looking for that one bug that crys out for me to get it with no luck. I am however going Sunday to look at a 1965 bug in San Antonio and keeping my fingers crossed that this is the one. Will post videos if I get so if no new videos it was a bust... Wish me luck
