Big Truck Big Travels

Жыл бұрын

We've been planning this Alaska RV road trip for over a year and we're doing it. Enough talk, let's walk! Well...we'll drive but you get the picture.
Taking our Class C to Alaska so we can get to some remote areas and drive on roads less traveled. We've taken our Big Rig before but this time will be different. We're going to Denali and Tek campground but also the Dalton highway and so much more.
Starting at Mile marker 0 in Dawson Creek is an exhilarating experience as all the planning has come to fruition as we start our adventure this summer.
May is early to drive up to Alaska but we want to spend more time, 5 months more time! Some campgrounds are closed but some really cool ones are open...one of the advantages of going early is that those RV parks which are open are rarely busy so we can stay flexible with no reservations.
Beautiful waterfalls in Wells Gray make for an interesting stop. So good that we extended our stay in the North Thompson Provincial Park. Arriving in Prince George, BC we opt to stay at a Passport America park which we've stayed at before. In fact, our big rig is featured on their website to show that HDT's can fit in Mama Yeh RV Park.
We finally arrive in Dawson Creek, British Columbia the start of the Alaska Highway at Mile 0. Of course, a visit to Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire and the Visitor Center are all part of the day's activities along with a visit to the Kiskatinaw curved bridge.
Daily fuel stops will be a different sort of travel duty for us and they continue through this trip.
It will be fun and an adventure in a Class C plus, bigger than a vanlifer (Van Life) but smaller than a truck Super Class C. We'll scout out places for future visits to Alaska (there will be 4 of them).

We use the TSD card for diesel fuel and save a bundle each time we fill up our Big Rig. We also use it to fill up our Onan generator.
The big blue boards (XL version) we use sometimes to get us "un-stuck" is from:
Gotreads.com
Our Class C is built by Thor Motorcoach on a Ford F550 chassis. It's a production build Magnitude model XG32. We tow our red Jeep Wrangler Sahara behind it. We've made some modifications to it so that we can boondock comfortably. Lithium batteries, Victron 3000w multi-plus inverter, dual alternators charge while traveling and mods to the water system greatly enhance it's boondocking capabilities.
Our extreme completely custom 5th wheel is built on a semi-trailer chassis with air suspension and air brakes. Completely loaded it weighs 42,000 lbs rolling down the highway. And we do roll down the highway nearly every week. You see, we believe that if your home has wheels they should be used.
Vehicles:
2016 Volvo VNL780 "Voyager"
2016 Smart fortwo "Pathfinder"
2019 SpaceCraft Custom built semi-trailer 5th wheel "Orion"
2023 Thor Magnitude XG32 Class C "Curiosity"
2017 Jeep Wrangler Sahara "Artemis"
Power system:
3250 watts of solar with Panasonic panels
30.1 KWH of Lithium batteries
2- 4K watt Magnum Inverters deliver power as if we are on shore power
2- 4K watt 240v Cotek Inverters deliver additional power for our LG Mini split HVAC and stove
Coachnet is our roadside assistance company we use but hopefully we don't use them too often. LOL
We are not sponsored by Whataburger but I do enjoy them anytime I can get my hands on one. They used to be just out of Texas but they have expanded.

From my memories of being in Alaska, in the 70's. Moose poop was a large oval pellet like object. A little more than an inch long. I've seen them made into a moosequito, by sticking a porcupine quill for a moosequito

My parents had a condo for 30yrs. in Acapulco. We used boxed milk the whole time. Came in quart boxes and tasted great when cold. Only way to have freshish clean milk. Wish I could find it here for hurricane season. We were big homemade granola eaters! They sold in 2012 when things got dangerous. But they still have American friends who spend six months are year there. Crazy!

In 94 i came down from Anchorage on the Alcan while they werr finishing the new road. I was in the service and decided to drive home and we were pulling a small camp trailer and my wife and i spent the might in the trailer in a small town, took off early and it was miserable it had snowed and under it was mud and junk from the constriction. We got to the next small place and stopped. They were curious about where we came from and i told them the town and i said it had taken us about 4 hourd to go 25 miles because the road was so bad and they said it was closed last night and expect to open in the morning. No wonder we didnt hsve any traffic 😂 we were dumb. Have a better trip and Gods speed

There are some definite advantages but we miss our big rig. We are surprised by how "roomy" our 32 ft Class C is and how comfortable. It does get a little cozy at times but it's very doable.

Another great video, David and Sondra! We drove the highway in 2007 and I remember well, the original Alaska Highway bridge you showed about 30 minutes in. I think we were still able to drive it then. I wondered then how long they would choose to maintain it. Thanks for all your sharing and safe travels!

Thanks, Pete for sharing. We drove across it in 2017 but just to get to the other side! They closed it to traffic in 2021 or 2022 (I believe). Still a beautiful structure. Glad you enjoyed it and appreciate your time watching the channel.

And so far plenty of stores to visit and get your restocking on. But I don't see where you need very much of that, thanks to those monthly grocery boxes! You guys are always so fun to be around even though one of you is a Serial (Cereal) Mixer lol. Wishing you continued safe and wonderful travels. Happy Mothers Day Sondra. We are from BC and lived in AK for a while. Make sure you gas up before getting to Muncho Lake! Gas is waaaaay expensive there! They have only one place to get gas and they know it. You’re going to see cars with gas cans strapped to the roof, that’s why! Also side note:- Bear and moose poop are distinctly different. Bear poor looks like a cow patty with berries. Moose poop looks like a heap of large grapes. Also remember it’s spring, bears are waking up…hungry, and with cubs. They are very protective. Bring Bear spray and put empty soup cans hanging from your back pack to make noise, like a wind chime but noisier. Also, May long weekend is when most provincial parks open for camping so it’ll be hit and miss through BC. Looks by this video you haven’t got to where the bison are yet. Have your camera ready there!

This video just came up on my feed this morning. I live in Dawson Creek. It’s too bad they’ve let that historical bridge decay. Shameful. My Mom lived in Dawson Creek in 1942 when the soldiers were arriving to start the build of the highway. She wrote down her story of the day of the huge blast downtown when a building storing dynamite and blasting caps exploded.
