We haven't had a road issue yet. But propane is nothing to fool around with and we have a leak. What else can happen? Our Thor Magnitude Class C has done really well so far in Alaska but is the Dempster Highway too much?
Our goal is to make it to the Arctic town of Tuktoyaktuk and camp on the shores overlooking the Arctic Ocean. The only road in Canada that you can drive to the Arctic Ocean.
It's the wilderness and very remote past the Arctic Circle and we're not sure if we can find a dump station and water for the next 28 days. We hope we can find a few places along the way but everything is beginning to close in September.
We've been planning this Alaska RV road trip for over a year and we're doing it. Enough talk, let's walk! Well...we'll drive but you get the picture.
Why do we want to drive the Dempster Highway and will we beat the weather? The road is all gravel but it's all weather...we hope we beat the snow.
Our RV is a Thor Magnitude so we hope it survives but the views are magnificent, awesome and stunning so the trip is a once in a lifetime event.

RV Camping
We like to "Switch it Up" between resorts and campgrounds and boondocking is always an option.
We draw inspiration from Keep Your Daydream KYD, Less Junk More Journey, Finding Our Someday and Changing Lanes. We normally travel in an HDT similar to KZbin channels Suite Travels and Watts on Wheels. I also get some ideas from the editing style of Happily Ever Hanks (Happilyeverhanks) #thankshanks and believe it or not, I actually learned something from MRBeast Mr Beast video's as well.
Our journey is the destination. We want to share in our experiences in our discovery of What's Next.
I get my music from:
Epidemicsound.com
Tracks:
All I Need is You by Gamma Skies
Beat to Quarters by Bonnie Grace
Toward Home by Cody Francis
Valkyries of Valhalla by Dragon Tamer
We Go On by Benjamin Carey
Amazon Shop (no extra charge to you)
A convenient way to see (or buy) the items you see in the video's which may help in your adventure.
www.amazon.com/shop/bigtruckb...
We use the TSD card for diesel fuel and save a bundle each time we fill up our Big Rig. We also use it to fill up our Onan generator.
The big blue boards (XL version) we use sometimes to get us "un-stuck" is from:
Gotreads.com
Our Class C is built by Thor Motorcoach on a Ford F550 chassis. It's a production build Magnitude model XG32. We tow our red Jeep Wrangler Sahara behind it. We've made some modifications to it so that we can boondock comfortably. Lithium batteries, Victron 3000w multi-plus inverter, dual alternators charge while traveling and mods to the water system greatly enhance it's boondocking capabilities.
Our extreme completely custom 5th wheel is built on a semi-trailer chassis with air suspension and air brakes. Completely loaded it weighs 42,000 lbs rolling down the highway. And we do roll down the highway nearly every week. You see, we believe that if your home has wheels they should be used.
Vehicles:
2016 Volvo VNL780 "Voyager"
2016 Smart fortwo "Pathfinder"
2019 SpaceCraft Custom built semi-trailer 5th wheel "Orion"
2023 Thor Magnitude XG32 Class C "Curiosity"
2017 Jeep Wrangler Sahara "Artemis"
Power system:
3250 watts of solar with Panasonic panels
30.1 KWH of Lithium batteries
2- 4K watt Magnum Inverters deliver power as if we are on shore power
2- 4K watt 240v Cotek Inverters deliver additional power for our LG Mini split HVAC and stove
Coachnet is our roadside assistance company we use but hopefully we don't use them too often. LOL
We are not sponsored by Whataburger but I do enjoy them anytime I can get my hands on one. They used to be just out of Texas but they have expanded.

I was in Tuk during the September long weekend of 2022. It was pretty quiet when I was there also. I stopped at the Pingo National Park and chatted with the staff there. They told me the sleds are stationed along the road during the summer because it is a smoother ride to travel on top of the tundra instead of using quads. When you had lunch did you order the Muktuk? It was pretty tasty. The bay that you looked at during your evening fires is where the females belugas have their babies. The town actually has two pingos. One had a house on it and the other a cool trail to a bench to see the views. The berry pickers may have been picking cloudberries. The McKenzie River is know for the majestic trees growing along it. The river brings soil from further south and deposits it along the was making great growing areas for the trees. This has been so much fun to watch and relive my trip last year. Look forward to watching your journey off back to the beginning of the Dempster Highway.

I was fascinated with the road to Tuk. When we were there in 1988 there was no road--we flew over for the day from Inuvik. At the time I was doing an independent study on Healthcare in the Arctic while working on my MSN. So we visited the public health nurses, visited the grocery stores to see what was available, and also were taken on a tour of the sewage disposal and other utilities. It was great to see both Tuk and Inuvik again through your video.

We went down the Dempster Road also the first of July, in our TT. Has new tires on everything, five blowouts, broken window, demolished our generator. Those “rocks “ took the paint off of the front of our camper, and truck. It was so rough our tailgate fell down onto the trailer hitch and took the paint off about a foot long . What a trip! We did camp at the Arctic Ocean, the village was a total surprise. But… we made it! A trip we will never forget, but we won’t go back down that road unless we’re in a tank 😂😂 Enjoy your trip, the wildlife was amazing and the views were spectacular.

Great video! A little confused. I thot the window to be in Alaska was June through August. A 3 month timeframe to beat the winter weather. How can u be in the Arctic in Sept. Were you just taking a risk. We’re planning to go in 24 & thot we had to be there in June & out in August. Thanks for your advice/thots. You guys have helped us so much with our plans. 👍
@bigtruckbigtravels
@bigtruckbigtravels 8 ай бұрын
Weather-wise, mid-May through August is ok to good. Depending on where you are in Alaska the first two weeks of September are ok but you have to start watching the weather and the "termination dust" on the mountains. It all depends on how flexible you want to be and the ability to head south quickly. You have to be out by October 1st unless you have mud/snow tires.

Hi guys! Like in the north of the province of Quebec, these pipes are for all of the services from the city to houses….everything. So water, probably heat….and black water. The city keeps it warm so everybody’s happy! 😂 The last leg to Tuk was not that bad for us 6-7 days before you guys… and yes, things close early! Even restaurants :-( Great videos again. I am a big advocate of turning propane while traveling. Propane reefers will stay cold for 6 to 8 hours unless you are in it and leaving to door open while you decide if you want a beer or a soda. every 10 minutes the door is open takes an hour to cool down. Propane on is not a good idea as you found out. Once stopped, then you can check the system. I know, one more thing to check but better than arriving at night with no propane or a fire along the way. And yes, I do practice what I preach!

Awesome adventure. Two huge thumbs up for a spectacular episode full of incredible scenery however, Grandma’s Kitchen lunch featuring a smokie wrapped in a slice of white bread instead of a nicely warmed bun looked like the “wurst” thing one could possibly eat. The lack of a review told us plenty 😂 Again, your Drone shots including the river crossings showed the vastness of the area. All the best on your southern journey.

The colors are amazing, didn’t think they’d be that amazing that far north. And that sunset!!! Great video, guys!! I think this may have had a higher percentage of scenic shots any any of your other Alaska videos. Great drone views--they really added a lot! Given that everything was shutting up at the beginning of September, really makes you appreciate the weather that those who live year-round in the Arctic Circle experience! Looking forward to seeing the drive back.

I love the *Arctic* talk! This summer, we went on a small expedition ship 1,200 miles north from Iceland to Svalbard, all the way to 80 degrees North. Trust me, we talked the Arctic talk! How well did your tires hold up to all the rough roads this summer? Did you carry a spare? I don’t recall seeing any tire issues in your videos. Wondering what we should be prepared for if we do this trip.

In one video - 2 or 3 back - you got to an RV park and we could not believe you passed up full hookups. What were you thinking? We thought getting full hookups would give you a welcome break from dry camping. I'm saying this, of course, because we love having a full hookup site. Hope to see your next big trip.
