The vacant land to left that you spoke of at about 5:20 uses to have a large pumping station that the discharge into the schuylkill the water came all the way down from the Mantua creek in Montgomery County through West Philly. At 48th & Markey St was these Giant Turbines that sent the water to that building that was on that lot.

The Gray Brothers operated a ferry and Inn on the western shore of the Shuykill Washington and Jefferson stayed there. Washington's inaugural parade began there and preceded down what became Gray's Ferry Ave. Jefferson had a Monticello on the Schuylkill that was located between Wharton Reed Street and Schuylkill Ave. (37th Street).

ive lived in this neighborhood for 2 years, I love how quiet it is and the proximity to the water, and love the "house protected by a poop" sign

This neighborhood was physically integrated on some of the blocks. Racial antagonism was low. The bad part was the chemical plants spewing pollution in the sir. I have respiratory problems from being born here. Actually, the isolation made gang violence non existing during the 50s, 60s and 70s. A gang would have to come into the neighborhood to start trouble. There were 25 families on the 1200 and 1300 blocks of Harmony Street mostly Black.

My dad grew up in this neighborhood. He would take me to this sandwich place Matty's and we'd get the toasted corn muffins. My dad was a member of the St John's club on 36th street. I believe it's still there.

What is the name of the video when you went down 3000 N. Darien Street, the Fairhill Section? I was born on that street. The house isn't there anymore but, just interested in seeing the street. Many houses aren't there now. It's near 8th and Indiana Sts. Closed to the cemetery. Thank you.

OMG! I used to live in the Forgotten Bottom neighborhood and it brings back horrible memories. In fact when my homies and out of state relatives used to come to visit me during its Hey day many years ago that they never came back to visit me & my mom because they FORGOT where I lived due to the horrible living conditions & how scary & quickly you can drive thru it in 2 minutes!!!

Dupont research. The only true Bottom section of Philadelphia was 46th and Market st. Or affectionately known as the Bottom. 1960-70's. Three Large Veritcally stacked projects low income housing. Prior to the sidewalks having a cement covering applied the streets were dirt or what we called the dusty. There are two remaining projects still standing.

Nice tour Toon. I think those projects were ones that I baby sat for a woman when I was a kid. I never heard of that area called the Forgotten Bottom. Thank you. I learn something new every day
@paulabarton94933 жыл бұрын
Hi toon thanks for the tour. It was enjoyable. Also you should not need to apologize all the time about turning on the air or having your window open. It is not very loud at all so I think we should be able to understand why it’s on. It is summer and it does get hot and ou do not need to get overheated.

May be the Purple Orchid (strip joint )your thinking of. I think there is or was a swingers club nearby as well. Numerous forgotten /forgettable bottoms,i'm sure. We used to do a little racing down there in the 80's.
