I've always been used to driving 6 cylinder BMWs, e21 323i. E28 525e, e34s, so when my friend took me for a ride in his e30 M3 it just felt like something was missing, like 2 cylinders!. It felt buzzy, high revving and not very BMW. Sure it handled great, but part of the pleasure in driving a BMW for me is the wail of the 6 cylinder engine on song, with that creamy linear power deliver. A great back to back comparison Josh with nice road ahead POV angle. Some tripod mounted roadside shots of the cars on the move would have been nice with the zing of the exhausts registering as you power past the camera.

There is going to be a bigger difference that will affect the nimble feel of a 316. Why not consider a stroker version of the small six build with 325e/525e block? It would give similar power to an m30 and bolt in with fewer changes than the big six.

The Alpina would be a slow in/ fast out car; while the M3 is a turn in an hold on through the corner. There might be a difference with the update in 1987 e30 to make it ride better. Also if your shocks are firmer or shorter than the Alpina stock that would affect as well. The seats remind me of the Recaro's in my 1990 Jetta 16V. They were so nice my car was stolen, interior stripped and left on the side or the road. I replaced it with a 1987 535i with 16" BBS copies but no sport package. Alpina had a turbo B7S version of the e12 528 that was faster than the e28 euro M5. I am curious how the B10 4.6 3 series, with a six speed manual, compares to an e36 M3 Evo?

The M3 is Sushi, the B6 is a really, really good steak. There's better, and there's preferable. I had a 1990 Sport Evo - it was a fantastic and visceral car but really it was like a rear drive Civic Type R so perfectly useable. Some of the time, I preferred the '85 Alpina C2 I had at the same time with a torquey 2.7 M20. It wasn't as quick as the M3 but it was just sooo easy to drive. Plus back then it was worth a couple of thousand on a good day so you could kick its head in and not really worry.😂 Sport Evos were all catalyst prepared so they can definitely benefit from a good ECU remap. Not many actually do the full 238, more like 225.

🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🙋♂❓❓❓‼⁉Oh man do I have questions. Awesome vid. You never have disappointed me in that regard. I could've sworn Alpina did some E30s with even bigger M30s. Like B30 or maybe even B35. No-I'm not thinking of that South African car. I still have the second red, 2dr, 325i 5spd E30 I bought like 20 years ago, but it's been in the garage for about ten years now. I want it to stay a street car that I might take to the track a couple times ever. But I want to engine swap it. Just having difficulty in deciding what to use. K 24 is tried and true, and could be kind of an engaging engine. A 2.3 Ecotec turbo sounds like fairly lightweight, cheap power. But an N52 with it's 6speed seems like the spiritual successor with about 100 extra horses and no weight penalty. I'd love to hear what other geeks about this stuff who may be more knowledgeable think about these things. I know the N52 route might be kind of odd to some, but I love that engine, and it's keeping a BMW NA smoov smoov straight six.

@@underwearunderthere2454 yes Alpina made a B6 3.5 E30 which is a true beast!!! I like where your head is at regarding a swap!!! Some interesting ideas there. Personally, for me, I look for the simplest, most HP effective swap that retains the true BMW’ness of the car. So I like to retain my BMW engines. Im not huge on N52s, electric waterpumps are junk to me. Plus the electronics and everything makes for a more confusing swap. The simplest, most fun swap is an S52 from an e36 M3!
@underwearunderthere2454Ай бұрын
@@m3nameisjosh464 Your advice holds quite a bit of weight for me considering your experience. I imagine S52s are pretty expensive. You can see I suffer with analysis paralysis about my E30.
@m3nameisjosh464Ай бұрын
@@underwearunderthere2454 dig deep into my channel and you will find an E30 M50 swap series. Its a swap that can be DIYED for about 2k and under. Makes the e30 a very fun car, while still being a cheap engine, and simple. Now the same swap but with the S52 would make it even more of a monster. S52 starts at about $2500 for the engine alone, vs $500 for an M50. But 240hp to 189. An an m52b28 is a good middle ground. Can be cammed, headers, and tuned to be a lottt of fun
