I live in an area in canada where no matter where you are you are either going up or down a hill. Seeing that there is a setting that actually lets the tires spin is super exciting. A lot of people dont understand how bad a vehicle cutting power is on a snowy hill.

From the bulky valley, I have the XLT towing package, and I left my gate key in the house today, there’s a back road around the property that’s hills and covered in about a foot of snow, the Maverick made it through with no problems at all, was going to change it and call a friend to help pull us out if we got stuck, but there was no need.

It’s one of the few 2022+ smaller size cars on the road with big power, proper AWD and NO CVT. I’m looking at Mazda 3 turbos, 6-speed wrx’s, and AWD Camrys. For under 30k in some trims it seems just too good to be true.

Really like seeing video shots of the tires and if they’re spinning fully. A lot of the new awd systems don’t push enough torque to the back wheels, it looks like this one does in sand mode. Nice video!

Ford's AWD system is definitely more robust than most others. I had a Ford Edge AWD that at one point sent too much power to the rear in a snow storm the first time I accelerated from a stop lol. Gave me a little fish tail for a second
@supersnot4
@supersnot4 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of people including myself have software called "ForScan" (unfortunate name, I know) which allows you to see and tweak every module in Ford and Mazda vehicles. Many people have accessed the module for the AWD to view the PID data on the clutch packs. Most Ford vehicles have the clutches significantly engaged ~40-60% regardless of wheel spin from a stop, and starts tapering off as speeds approach 40mph. As the system sees wheel spin, it engages the clutches more as needed. I watched it myself in my 2009 Escape hybrid. The system works fantastic, and feels like any true 4X4 I've driven. I can confirm that the clutches are capable of fully locking as well, since I can manually do so with the software and the wheels bind like a 4X4 in a turn.
@Marker-er3ro

@@supersnot4 That’s cool, do you need an OBD WiFi dongle? I would love the see a temporary lock button like our old Honda Pilot had.
@supersnot4
@supersnot4 2 жыл бұрын
@@Marker-er3ro Mine is directly connected via USB to my laptop. There are wifi dongles available though. The Escapes lost the lock button in 2008, though it's pretty much unnecessary unless you're driving in sand for longer distances to keep the clutches cool. Using Forscan to lock the system while offroading would be very inconvenient, but it was a fun experiment.

Yea what I'm learning from watching all your reviews, is that what you want is a traction control that is able to stop the spinning wheel to send power to the one that has traction. However, what you also want is an option to turn traction control totally off, and allow for a lot of wheel spin. Seems to me like new cars are learning the first trick pretty well - but in doing so, forget that sometimes you do want just a lot of spin. Glad to see the Maverick is not one them.

It did pretty good, it spins all the tires and doesn’t cut power off in sand mode. At a certain point of course there is no traction and not much ground clearance and no cars will plow much snow of course. I’d give it an A for an all wheel drive “cheaper” vehicle

@James-il3tq
@James-il3tq 2 жыл бұрын
I'd go with cheap aluminum rims (I use factory rims for winter and get another set of rims for summers). Steel rims look brutal especially when they rust sooner then later. Also heavier which hurts MPG a tad.
@rightlanehog3151
@rightlanehog3151 2 жыл бұрын
@@James-il3tq My steel rims are 1 inch smaller than the factory alloys. This means excess weight really is not an issue and the narrower tires offer lower rolling resistance than winter tires of factory spec. The extra sidewall really helps cushion the ride when summer potholes turn into winter craters. There is virtually no rust on them after 16 winters because they get a spray of Krown rustproofing when they are installed in November. BTW aluminum also corrodes.

I just ordered my wife the 2022 Ford Maverick in velocity blue. She wanted a small truck without a huge price. We had to drive a hundred miles away, to just look at one someone else ordered into the Dealership. She originally chose the XL, but I talked her into the XLT with the Luxury and Towing Packages. After some more thought and having FX4 models of other Ford trucks, I called the salesman we ordered through and told him to add the FX4 package. I felt that with the vehicle being lower to the ground, living in the country and her unique driving style (LOL), she needed the skid plates and different traction settings. I have seen many great reviews on this new small truck. I am impressed with all the reviews and am very confident she will be happy with the vehicle and the price. If she complains about the price change, I will add it in my down payment. Thanks Ford, for the new vehicle and thank you, Ryan for the test video.

I heard that Toyota is coming out with a pickup to compete with the Maverick. Personally we need a body on frame pickup for our needs. We’re on our 4th Ranger. It’s a 11 XLT super cab with the 4.0 V6 and 5spd auto transmission. It’s a 4X4 as we get 5-6 feet of snow every winter. We mainly use our Ranger for work around our property. I added a K&N intake and a FlowMaster exhaust. I now consistently get 23mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 75mph. Next month it’ll turn 12 years old and we have only 35K miles. We’re in our 50s so I’m sure the family will be fighting over it after we’re dead and gone.

Very good. I didn't know different modes would work better--at times--than slippery mode does. I don't think the average driver is going to know that sand-mode works better in deep/tall snow. Perhaps Ford should add a deep-snow-mode even if it's duplicate of another mode.

Nicely done with the "sand" mode. My corolla's traction control would be close to that "slippery" mode, and it felt like the car was broken. Just a standard 1-2 inches of powdery snow on an unplowed street would leave any driver screaming in rage. That has permanently affected my perception of all traction control systems when it comes to snow. I had to turn that bullshit off every single day just to make the car perform at the most basic level.

It did surprisingly alright in Sand Mode. I imagine with decent tires it would do better. I just wish they would make all of the AWD systems/features that are available in the Bronco Sport available in the Maverick. That's all it would need to round it out. I know they want to control the price, fine. Make an FX4 off road model that INCLUDES those extras.

Thanks for comparing drive modes to those of us who didn't order the FX4 package. Out of curiosity, does the traction control automatically kick back on after reaching a certian speed?

Check the TFL truck video they did an hill climb test with this and the Santa Cruz. The Maverick did way better. The Hyundai Santa Cruz failed plus they smelled burnt oil from the DSG transmission.

I figured mud/ruts mode would be the most aggressive since in sand you don't really want tires to spin but in mud you gotta spin tires to keep the tread cleaned out.

Finally got our first couple inches out here in SE MI to test my Bronco Sports Badlands "Slippery" mode. One thing i did notice in slippery mode, is that it seems to hold gears speeding up and downshift faster while slowing down. This let me rely more on engine braking to slow me down at a stoplight / vs applying break alone. I know it doesn't apply to FX4 Maveric but just general info, also noticed slippery mode really worked those 2 independent rear clutches when i hit a patch of deeper snow or ice. Hope Ford puts the badlands system on a "tremor" edition maverick. its pretty fantastic.
