Happy Birthday! Being of a similar age (and having watched many of your videos over the years) I enjoyed learning about the arc of your life thus far. Something I've been thinking about quite a bit lately is how being an early and avid reader of science fiction has shaped my expectations of the future, both positively and negatively. Like you, I expected the world to be much different in 2025 than it has turned out to be. My limited experience is that people who didn't read all that early science fiction by Asimov, Heinlein, and many others have very different expectations. I do wonder if many science fiction readers have a much higher expectation of apocalypse by virtue of having read and watched so much post-apocalyptic fiction.

1971 TI Calculator that had square roots, Trig functions, Logarithms, etc. I retired my slide rule forever. Who could forget the HP Calculators with “Polish notation”. Happy 60th.

Oh yeah, the HP RPN calculator. They had the ENTER key!. I had the 34E and dreamed about the 41C which were used in the Shuttle as a backup device for their confirmation calculations. Orbit mechanics programs possibly...😅

After getting a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1965 on a Navy program, I was sent back to get an MS in 1972. Most of the folks I was competing with for grades had just graduated, and there'd been a lot of changes in EE between 1965 and 1972, so in a way I was seven years behind them. But I was a Navy LT on full pay and allowances, and was the only one in the class who could afford the $395 cost of the HP 35 that came out that year. And *that* was the great equalizer, because the rest were still using slide rules for calculations!

@ Yes, Mechanical Eng was me, just being able to perform a square root was like magic, replacing literally Pages of math, with a couple of keystrokes to 6 decimal places without double checking for any mistakes, was a total game changer.

Happy birthday I have also thought about this in my lifetime Born in 55 not much has really changed compared to my grandfather when he was born we didn't have electricity we didn't have cars we didn't have air conditioning computers radio TV indoor plumbing any of the things that we take for granted today but in my lifetime we've had all those things and we still have the same things that I had when I was a kid there hasn't been any drastic change like there was in my grandfather's lifetime.The internet has come along and we have GPS on our phone and we can call people from about any place we want but my life is about the same but that will soon change with the self-driving cars the robots and AI.

Vintage 1960 here, watched moon landings, the jettisons and star trek. I have waited a long time for my flying car, might be able to get an Evtol before my dirt nap comes. Will not see the free electricity they promised from nuke power " to cheap to meter" yeah NO. Enjoyed your memory stream, triggered some memories I have from those times. I think everything is accelerating in relation to my past, almost like exponential, defiantly not linear. What a long strange trip it has been John, enjoy the ride.

Happy Birthday! I am a few years older than you and I watched all the space launches and also thought we would be spreading out into the solar system by the time I was an adult. I read Gerard K O'Neal's The High Frontier and was convinced that was the future and it was coming soon. Sadly the Space Shuttle, as amazing as it was, wasn't up to the task and it has taken far longer than I thought at the time. Watching Starship launch has rekindled my enthusiasm for space.

I turned 80 last Dec. Happy birthday!! By the way, Dick Tracy started with a two-way wrist radio through the late 40's and the 50's then somewhere in the early 60s or late 50s Diet Smith who invented the radio for Tracy upgraded to the wrist TV. Diet also had is magnetic flying coupes (I believe) He was traveling to the moon and back on a regular schedule and brought back the Moon Maid who married Tracy Jr. Don't know what Tracy's up to today. Should be interesting.

Hello there, not sure you remember me, we met at the 2023 Tesla shareholders meeting (and had diner will Ellie and Joe T at that little Mexican place near the airport), anyway, I just turned 65 myself.. time flies 😬. Congrats on becoming an old fart, many don’t make it 😬👍. The thing about living longer is, most of your peers are gone,so it’s a plus and a minus…. What’s killing most of us is extremely poor diets, and lack of exercise, if you can improve those things, you can certainly live a longer, healthier life 👍

I remember looking at a wall of books in the 6th grade and think I had read them all. I got a Commodore 64 when it came out. I also bought the 1525 floppy drive. I still have them in the attic. The problem was it's sending receiving speed. I remember when the first 1200 baud I could no longer keeping up speed wise with reading it as it came in.

I imagine within the next 10 years that the human race will know that it is not alone in the universe and that we are being visited by other non-human races. Within 50 years we will be directly interacting with these other species (other than just being tagged and released... as we are now) and may be on our way to becoming a galactic species. However the process above will come at the cost of giving up many parts of our culture as we become dominated by older and more technically advanced civilizations. There will be a huge learning curve and cultural strife along that path. I hope that it doesn't turn out like what was described in the animated film, Titan AE.

The question I have is if SpaceX will back off its stated goals. I anticipate this could happen if Elon is ever Read Into the govt's secret legacy UFO program. If we see SpaceX suddenly change their goals we'll know that Elon was read in and might have changed his ideas on how to proceed to Mars.
