My wife is barely 5 foot and weighs around 90 lbs. Although she is physically small she is a force to reckon with. She has never been meek and submissive. I will admit it can be comical to see her get mad about something because she is so small. We're going on 18 years of marriage and I wouldn't change a thing.

#5 Cost---I think the main thing is IF you want to live like you did in America. Adapt to the more simple lifestyle, don't always go to restaurants, get a simple home (you can even find reinforced concrete constructed for a decent price). You can live SIMPLY here for a small amount. Traveling around like a tourist to all the vacation spots will be expensive. I settled down and married a Filipina, she cooks good simple Filipino food so it doesn't cost as much. #4 Submissive Filipinas---I would say they are decent and polite. So many American women have this arrogant "Boss Babe" mentality so that ANYTHING is going look submissive by comparison to it. Filipinas know that a happy husband is going to treat them better than a henpecked husband. I want to make my wife happy because she makes me happy. If we both give all to the relationship, the relationship ship will give a hundredfold back to both of us.

My budget of 50k PHP per month is fine for my wife and I with 3 elementary age children to live in a middle class neighborhood (no squatters, tile floors in a cement block 2 br house). It gives us enough to enjoy outings and in country trips. At the current exchange rate it's about 1k USD. If you want to live like a king figure 2k to 3k USD.

I find supermarket shopping about the same cost as in the UK. It is things like housing costs, local taxes, utility bills, repair costs, car insurance which are much less making living expenses overall muvh cheaper

When I first came to the Phillipines, I had a lot of people tell me how unsafe it was before I left. I ignored all of it. I did have this amazing little filipina waiting for me, though!! She is beautiful beyond words inside and out. The people here, on average, are amazing. People who say it isn't safe are the ones that never came here. Sure, if you go out looking for trouble, you can find it. That woman is now my wife of three years. I laugh when I hear people say women here are submissive. Don't misunderstand this!! My wife treats me like a king and respects me like one, but i also respect her as my queen. This is how a Filipina wife gets her husband to do things she wants!! She makes you so damn happy you will move heaven and earth just to make her smile. Believe me when I say women here will have no problem telling you how it is if you test them! Even if they are 4'9" and 77lbs like my wife lol. Once I married, I never left the Phillipines, and while I do miss home at times, I have never regretted living here. Family functions how families should! I am treated better by my in-laws than my blood relatives. I am American. Buying Western things is way more expensive here than back home. If you adapt to the way of life here, your cost of living can get pretty cheap. Saying that, more than likely, you will want some of the things you are used to back home. $1500 is a good average amount, but that can go higher or lower depending if you live in or out of a big city.

I first moved to the Philippines for six plus years back in 1980, when I was on active duty in the US Air Force and assigned to Clark Air Base. A great video about where my wife grew up and was raised. My wife of 30 years now. And where she now wants us to retire in COMVAL province. Which is a little tough for me as I have two FB friends that retired there and have come to hate the place and have both left their Filipina wives to return home to the USA. The difficulties that they describe are nothing like my experiences every time I come for a visit. I believe they all have had problems with a culture clash where they expect their neighbors and the town politicians to bend to their USA way of doing things where as I have the opposite approach of bending my way of doing things to adopt to the Pinoy way of doing things. If I wanted the Philippines to be like the USA, I should have stayed in the USA.

All I want in a house is hot and cold running water,reliable power supply and a flush western toilet,if I go to stay(thinking seriously about it)in P.I. Is that too much,or too expensive to ask for? Do you know what the average cost would be for having those things?

@@poonlikka6174 , born and raised in Manila for 18 yrs. here, no one I knew had water heater in his home, nor power generator, nor a Western-like toilet, but any of them is probably available at stores. We just didn't need any of it. Good luck if you go and stay.

May I address the points you make, which, by the way, are well made? Some viewers may disparage me, but I am not particularly bothered. I have lived here for three years. 1. Totally safe. I live in a semi-urban area - never had a problem. In fact I have the occasional beer with the trike guys near our house and if anyone gets out of order they are pulled out. 2. Differences. I live in Antipolo/suburbs but we are fortunate enough to be able to travel. My family and I live in Rizal, but have spent time in Cebu, Bilarin, Leyte and Mindanao. 3. My wife doesn't want a green card. We came here because she wanted to come home, after working overseas. I was willing to acquiesce to her wishes because I've had a great life traveling around the world and now wish to settle down. She has no desire to live in the US, Canada or the UK. Suits me. 4. We came here with cash. My wife had no idea how much I was worth. It shocked her when she found out. She wasn't looking for for a 'cash daddy'. 5. She is NOT submissive. However, the domestic shit I get is unbelievable if i get out of line! Definitely matriarchal. And tampo is real! 6. We have cash. We have property. We do not exist, we live. Cash is not an issue. Our kids are at university and private schools. 6. Language? I speak some Tagalog but Filipinos, where we live, will not speak Tagalog to me! they see the white boy and they insist on talking English. my wife has been to Europe - UK, Belgium, Netherlands and France and she enjoyed it but ultimately, "it's more fun in the Philippines."

I saw lots of white folk learned tagalog and spoke tagalog to Filipinos and get answered in English by Filipinos, however if you learned bisaya/cebuano you get answered in the same language. Reason for this is that foreigners accent is too obvious in tagalog, and if Filipinos hear the accent it immediately translate to "he's having a hard time talking, I need to adjust and speaks english instead", it doesn't matter how long you live in the Philippines as long as you have an accent at least for tagalog you're gonna get an english reply most time. While there's too many Filipinos who have different accents when speaking bisaya making it hard to tell if they're foreign or not, being white doesn't necessarily mean foreigners since we had a movie star who is white blond but born filipino.

Crime happens regardless. The people who know you and whom you treat with respect may not rob you. But those who commit crime are usually strangers. Also, if a druggie needs money for his fix, he will rob you. Respect or no respect. And often, a maid would be in cohouts with the robbers and let them inside your house. Some guys got killed. I was burglarized inside a hotel. I am sure it was not because of disrespect. It was because they wanted to steal some money from me. And my phones. Pickpockets target you, scammers and deadbeats exist whether you are respectful or not. They want your money. Sometimes, if you treat people with respect, then they see it as weakness, and you as an easy mark. They may just ask to borrow money and never pay back. If all bad things that people do to us could be eliminated by simple respect, we would not need the police, the army, guards, etc. Many banks in the Philippines have armed guards with huge carbines. And armored cars have guards with M-16. All the banks employees are polite and treat customers nicely, and the drivers of the armored vehicles are not disrespectful. But armed robberies do happen regardless.

I was born in Mindanao, South Cotabato, Sarangani . Same town as Manny Pacquaio ( Gensan). I love my town, surrounded by nature. Very close to the beach and surrounded by nature! It's beautiful to wake up in the morning with a smell of fresh air from the mountains. We speak ilonggo, Bisaya, Ilokano, Tiboli etc....we have a very rich culture. Yes, South Cotabato used to be a dangerous area, especially in the 70s, but we always feel safe because of the military that's based in our town, full of beautiful women. I'm based in Sydney, Australia, for 30 years now, but my heart always belongs to my Country Philippines 🇵🇭 and my hometown. I missed it so much, especially during Christmas time, I missed the misa de gallo, midnight mass, noche Buena, and the band parading the whole town to wake you up for misa de gallo. If you're a foreigner married to a Filo and you adapt to our culture, then you can live a happy and healthy life there. Most Filipinos understand and speak English. We're very friendly people. ❤️💚🎅🥳🎉🎊

I've been to cebu a lot due to past work. All the places i've been too from north to south philippines cebuanos are really great english speakers. First time i've been there the local transpo confused me and i do not understand bisaya.

As a Canadian, I was once on a bus leaving L.A. and just as it was leaving the station, the bus had a mechanical issue and needed to return to the station, going around the block . . . I will NEVER forget praying to God asking that we not need to get out of the bus when at one point the bus stopped behind the bus station. I've travelled to over 30 countries, and have NEVER felt that vulnerable. Thank you for your video.

I'm married to a Filipina I met years ago when we were both in graduate school at UBC in Canada. As a couple, we have some misunderstandings and arguments but not to the point where the utensils are flying all around the house. 😀😀😀We treat each other with the utmost respect and dignity, and our relationship is a give-and-take and works great for us. We intend to retire to the Philippines a few years from now and looking forward to it.

#1 Dangerous--- I grew up in the suburbs of LA and going downtown was always a bit scary to me. Moved to the Philippines and I feel safe even walking into some of the poorer sections of the smaller towns. There might be some of the "bad areas" of the big cities that I should stay away from but from what I've heard of NYC or Chicago you are probably safer even in Marawi City. That may be a sarcastic exaggeration but there are probably not many places in the Philippines more dangerous than NYC and Chicago.

I just came back from the Phillipines… had been told it was unsafe… spent 4 weeks there, felt safe at ALL times. Got home to Melbourne… had my wallet stolen in Melbourne in the first few hours of being home. It is such a lie that Phillipines is not safe. Just be cautious about where you go. Good video bro on debunking the myths about the Philippines. I was in Cebu or actually on Camotes Island for 6 out of 7 months this year when the Philippines eased restrictions. I was in Cebu/Camotes Island from early April to early July and back again in early August. I have a simple house my gf n I had built back in December 2017 on her land in one of the barangay near San Francisco. I love the area bc no traffic n love our neighbours who buy items from our small business of Beauty products and Sari Sari store items. As well as our main store in Tugas store just outside of San Francisco selling Beauty products and household products. I feel more safer in San Isidro than here in Melbourne. I love the Philippines and eventually I will live here permanently.

There are about 120 to 187 dialects spoken in the Philippines 🇵🇭 depending on their classification. I just hate when people assume that a certain country or place is not good for everyone, especially if they have never been there…my wife and daughter are both Filipinos, and I love every bit of it…Bulacan just outside Manila is where we live and work…we also travel to New York 🇺🇸where my family lives. I cannot wait to fully retire, so I can really enjoy the entire country of the Philippines 🇵🇭🇺🇸

As far as older generation learned like me, learned that we have more or less 180 dialects spoken or written here in the Philippines. Tagalog is our national language, which is spoken or written to make it easier to communicate among Filipinos with different native dialect.

@isree ramotar the info 120 to 187 languages spoken in Philippines you got it from wikipedia? ...it's actually a misnomer, bec. while the numbers is correct, it doesn't really refer to 'language'. it refer to the number of 'dialects' spoken. the main difference is> language has written litarature always, while a dialect mostly has none. anyways , Philippines has 2 official languages only. hope this helps. 😉

Even me as a local, that Southern Mindanao, particularly ng South Cotabato is very dangerous because of the Muslim rebels. My wife is actually from that area and when I try to go and stay there for a while, I actually found it to be very peaceful and people everywhere are so friendly unlike in the urban areas. It made me think to retire their for good.

Sadly, Muslims are commanded by their prophet to terrorize non muslims and subjugate them before he died. He even included it in his made up book. Your content is accurate. I spend a lot of time here in the Philippines and love the country and the majority of it’s people. However It’s heartbreaking to see how some of them have to live…in absolute poverty….living in self built shacks….working most of the time for instance in hotels for about 6 or 7 US dollars per day……while the hotels are comparable to western prices….80 to 100 US dollars per night. There is a lot of corruption here unfortunately and Poverty breeds petty crime …..people here in authority just seem to tread them further into the ground. They never seem to complain…..they are very resilient….wonderful people.

People complain but nothing are done so we just need to be resilient instead. politicians/leaders don't do anything or not enough. Many people were shutdowned if they criticizied the government. Then even if there's enough evidence of these politicians being on fault, they will deny it and instead blame others just to keep their position. I know it's not a problem unique to Philippines but it's just this is very obvious problem in Phil yet nothing are done.

Where is that hotel that pays only $6 to 7 a day? Because minimum wage here is around 11-12 dollars a day and about $8-9 in the provinces and regular employees, especially at hotels and business offices earn more than that. Even daily rate maids now charge 500 pesos a day or about 9 USD. Because its hard these days to find stay in maids, many who need them badly have to shell out that kind of salary. Also, the recent governments we have had are doing a much better job compared to the ones in the past decades that were really responsible for our economic downfall and high crime rates. Poor people here can now go to college for free at state owned colleges and universities, those with kids and without work can get monthly cash dole-outs from DSWD as well as medical assistance. In the past few years crimes have also decreased all over the country. As attested by the video maker, it is pretty safe now and there are less crimes. And our economy is fast rising and improving. Many people managed to improve their lives without relying on the government by just studying and working hard. We cant expect the government to feed all the poor. Poverty mostly exists among those people who breed a lot of children and cannot even provide for them and send them to school and raise them properly, thus their kids repeat the cycle of the parents and also breed many kids even at a young age so they cannot get out of poverty. Likewise those who have bad habits like drinking, gambling, smoking and doing drugs are all set for a life of poverty. My point is the poverty is not all the governments fault. Indeed the past corrupt governments did contribute to the inequality and hardships, but people also contribute to their own miseries such as having so many children that they have no means of providing for therefore trapping them in the cycle of poverty.

They don't complain much because they don't know the difference unless you have been from different Western country like you or me been working from U.K for ages. And also another strategy they should stay in one child policy if they live in poverty. Like me and my brother did well in life we have been from extreme poverty and decided not to have any child so we live better than majority of many Filipinos. They should stop giving birth like rat to lower the poverty cycles. Unfortunately majority has no mindset like that. Because of Catholic church intervention about contraception 😥

I really agree with your observation...I am a Filipina but my culture is so much different from most of the Filipinos around me, the difference basically lies on education, religious upbringing, family background and many more factors, I myself before I married my American husband never ever dream of leaving my country, the Philippines, why should I I was busy in my masteral studies as a scholar where I finished three master's degrees and became a busy College Professor where I eventually became the dean in the College of Business Administration Department...if my Filipino husband an, NBI, equivalent to an FBI in the US, didn't die I could not have married an American and moved here in the US.

Just chanced upon your vid and thank you for debunking some misconception about the Philippines. Fyi for the foreigners out there, English is widely spoken and understood in our country because English is taught from grade school to college. Our national language is Filipino/Tagalog but since our country comprises 7,100 plus islands we also have differents languages /dialects that are spoken depending on which group you belong. For Filipinos who has different mother tongues, we usually use Tagalog or Taglish ( combo or Tagalog & English) in order to understand or communicate to one another.

I grew up in Torrance, downtown LA always seemed a bit scary. Reports I've heard make it sound like NYC or Chicago are as dangerous as a war zone. Moved to the Philippines, I feel safe even going into the poor villages. The people are warm and friendly.

I get so tired of people saying you need X number of dollars per month to live in the Philippines. The truth is people everywhere find ways to live on whatever they have. The real question is what kind of lifestyle can you enjoy with the budget you have. Frankly, I don't have much. Fortunately my tastes are simple and my needs are few. I can live comfortably in Lapu Lapu on a pension that would have me out on the street in LA. You are quite right about a middle class US lifestyle being *more* expensive here than in the US. There is very little demand for some products and services the average American would consider essential. If you can find these things at all the cost is insane. That doesn't make the Philippines a bad place, it just indicates that you might not be in the right country.

I live in Metro Manila, where over the past two decades I have seen more than my fair share of homeless expats. It is very common for some western expats with limited incomes to move to the Philippines and later have serious financial problems. The Philippines is the last place I would want to be without a good, steady income.

@@kenrice Most of the homeless expats were scammed by either their partners or people around them. Foreigners would be safe if they don't let anyone touch their credit cards, cash and other important documents. I've seen one homeless that lost even his passport from scammers.

@@mikejones5364 You have valid points, being very aware of your surroundings should be your default setting whenever traveling (regardless of the country). As a guy from the West, I know I will stick out like a sore thumb in PH.....it is best to not draw a lot of added attention to yourself by flashing your wealth (i.e. money, clothes, jewelry, mobile devices, etc) and sticking to areas with expat communities would be safer than a smaller provice community where you are the only outsider. It should be noted that not every Filipino is a scammer, there are plenty of good people that will look after you. Just be smart about what you do and where you go.

Generally, Colon Street is a safe place just don't be too complacent with your things on there since there are also lots of pickpocketers in that area especially if you're wearing backpack. Better safe than never.

@@lauriecraver9918 I would recommend he stays at an Airbnb that says super host because the other listings don't look like their pictures or what I did was to stay at a hotel for a week and look at properties in person, I ended up renting a studio condo month to month for 380 in cebu city near Ayala mall . Also it takes about 3 to 4 days to recover from jet lag so I would recommend to your son not to have girlfriend meet him right away at airport especially if they never met in person, let him rest and get his wits about him .I don't know of any properties near a beach except Mactan newtown which is the small island the airport is on , hope info helped , I never went to the falls so I don't know

While Tagalog and Filipino are sometimes used interchangeably as the national language, they are two distinct languages. The irony is, this distinction is somewhat unknown even to a lot of Filipinos. I myself learned of it much later in life. Being born are raised in the Philippines, I can say I am fluent in Filipino and would know enough Tagalog to get by, but one time when I had a chance to converse with someone in just Tagalog, I could not make out half of what they were saying.

@Tristan I thought so as well, until as I said, I learned the difference much later in life from scholars who studied the field. Tagalog is one of the local languages mainly spoken in the southern part of Luzon and small pockets around the country. Filipino on the other hand is a more modern language, it is a combination of some local and foreign languages (mostly English and Spanish) and "Tagalized" words specific only to Filipino. Since a significant part of the Filipino vocabulary is taken from Tagalog, the two terms are used interchangeably and it is also socially acceptable to do so. While Filipino is the national language, English is the official language used in education, business, government and legal communication. Because people prefer to speak in the local language in their area, when I travel around the islands, I find it easier to find someone that speaks English than Filipino. Sorry to hear you got robbed in your other video, sadly that happens a lot in the PH.

@Kaye Aye I am not surprised you would think that, as I have once done before. Like I mentioned in my previous replies, there is a significant number of Filipinos that don't even know this, and some that really don't care if they did. I have been fortunate enough to have worked with professionals who have majored in the subject, mostly from the University of the Philippines. I am not here to persuade you otherwise, as who am I but some rando in youtube. But if you are going to verify information, I recommend doing so with a trusted authority on the subject rather than what you have previously been told or what you can find on the internet.

Congrats on your move to Davao City! All great points you brought up in this video! Davao is the safest city in the Philippines if not all of Asia. A lot of credit for that goes to former mayor of Davao and president of the Philippines, Duterte. As for languages, there are so many as you mentioned and my parents are actually from Ilocos where they speak ilocano. Being raised in the US, I never learned that or tagalog, so hopefully I can learn visaya since I plan to stay in Davao. And $500 is nothing, even in the Philippines. You'll live like the native poorer Filipinos, so for a westerner, you'd be miserable. I think $1,500 is definitely more realistic and ideally even a bit more than that to really enjoy living there. And my Filipino wife will kick my ass if we got into a fight for sure..! Haha..!

But with 1500, you'd be living like a king here since most of the expenses are so cheap. The only expensive thing I can tell is the electricity. Could cost you 100-150 bucks if you open something like an air conditioner for 24/7, lol.

Totally agree that most Filipinas want to stay in their home country & it's something western guys should think about before dating/getting involved. Think seriously if you don't want to live in the Philippines or don't have the financial means to do so. You can live very very cheap if you submerge yourself into a Filipino lifestyle but will spend as much a your home country if you want the same western lifestyle.

To all foreign guys out there. Please don't be scared of so many things. You don't need to marry right away. have friends first. If you're kind it isn't hard for them to fall for you. Enjoy the places, go visit everywhere you can. If you find the place you really love, go settle there, find a girl (if you still don't have any.) Just be careful to not get the modern ones usually from the cities because some of them are getting influenced by the west. The traditional women usually are from the Provinces. Take your brothers and friends and go to the Philippines and marry a Filipina.
