The health services in the U.K. are free at point of contact, paid from our taxes. An unhealthy population puts a greater strain on this resource. A healthy population lives longer, is more productive and costs the government, and by extension the tax payer less. The obesity epidemic we see today in the U.K. is primarily caused by American fast foods, and junk foods, soda, pizza, chips, and crisps, hot dogs, McDonalds, KFC, and all the other shite that goes with it.

US citizens are taught to hate "big government." EU regulations help protect consumers by creating healthier animal and food growing conditions plus the processing of these foods. It's not perfect but so much better than what we see in the US. Will be interesting to see if the UK moves away from these (and its own strict regulations) post-Brexit and become more like the US.

One easy thing to avoid is ANY PRODUCT THAT IS ADVERTISED. If they have to trick you into buying it must mean it's no good. Ever seen an advert for vegetables or fruit? Neither have I.

We used to get adverts for Cape fruit (south african fruit suppliers) and Jaffa oranges in the UK - although you could argue it was more about advertising South African and Israeli produce rather than the fruit itself. We also advertised mushrooms (ok, neither fruit nor veg) on TV when I was a kid, with the slogan “make room for the mushrooms”. But to be fair your point is true in general.

@Bannimann2

No, it would not be worth it. In the US, companies can add any ingredient to a product and the FDA will only pull it if it is proven dangerous and even then , the companies will only face fines. In EU and UK, with the same standards, products have to be tested and approved as safe before launch. If a company breaks the rules in the UK , not only are they fined but decision makers can be criminally prosecuted up to and including corporate manslaughter and imprisoned.

That's not because washing foodstuffs with a chlorine solution is a problem in and of itself (when done correctly) but rather because of the specific reason US chicken is so washed. The level of bacterial contamination of intensively-produced poultry meat in the US is of a magnitude simply not seen in the EU or the UK, which is due to our higher hygiene and welfare standards required in poultry production, and which are strictly enforced.

The difference is in the UK the National Health Service cannot afford to tend the sick who become ill from eating toxic food, so the UK government reduces the cost to the NHS by banning toxic additives to food. The UK government simply cannot afford to pay the bill resulting from greedy corporations who use things like sewer oil or gutter oil in their manufacturing processes, legally. If you want a more perfect example of this, the current Prime Minister of Great Britain is about to ban smoking for anyone who is fourteen years old now, in the future. If you were fourteen now and you smoke in the future you will be breaking the law. That is also done to reduce the cost to the National Health Service. America is run by greedy corporations who make sure they can sell toxic substances to the Americans which are also addictive. Coke is a good example. It actually contained cocaine. As they advertised, it is the real thing. Nothing has changed. They simply looked for another addictive substance to add to their product.

Could there be a lax in legislature that enforces truth in nutrition labels in the UK? This was only improved in the US in recent years, yet still lacks transparency. For instance, the mention of "Natural and Artificial Flavors" is still listed on labels which could mean anything. There ought to be class action lawsuits springing up everywhere. I remember the reaction of shock and disbelief when I told my elderly father that e-cigarettes were dangerous to his health. He couldn't believe sucking an oil into his lungs would be as harmful as smoking tobacco. Another big fear is seeing what we deem as being healthier foods becoming bought out by companies of lesser morals and preparation practices.

@@akula9713 We're talking about more developed countries like America and western Europe, not Micronesian countries and teeny, tiny countries nobody's heard of. If the UK isn't the second fastest, it's definitely the fattest in Europe.

What I have learnt from watching videos such as yours on KZbin is that American food in general is quite awful. It is profit driven rather than quality driven. As a result of this profiteering process, such things as chlorine washed chicken end up on the supermarket shelves. The foul practice compensates for poor hygiene behaviour elsewhere in the supply chain (for example on farms), and that consumers are better protected by a system that doesn’t allow processors the simple ‘get-out’ of treating their chicken with chemicals. gets chlorine filled chicken. American cheese is simply vile and may lead to sodium overconsumption. As such, it may increase your risk of developing high blood pressure. American cheese is high in saturated fat and sodium, both of which may increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. American food in general is ultra-processed and comprised 57.9% of energy intake, and contributed 89.7% of the energy intake from added sugars. The content of added sugars in ultra-processed foods (21.1% of calories) was eightfold higher than in processed foods (2.4%) and fivefold higher than in unprocessed or minimally processed foods and processed culinary ingredients grouped together (3.7%). Both in unadjusted and adjusted models, each increase of 5 percentage points in proportional energy intake from ultra-processed foods increased the proportional energy intake from added sugars by 1 percentage point. Consumption of added sugars increased linearly across quintiles of ultra-processed food consumption: from 7.5% of total energy in the lowest quintile to 19.5% in the highest. A total of 82.1% of Americans in the highest quintile exceeded the recommended limit of 10% energy from added sugars, compared with 26.4% in the lowest. Basically American food is dangerous for your health and shouldn’t be consumed, even if you are dying of starvation. Better to eat one’s own faeces.
