Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term for a variety of symptoms and diagnoses, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Approximately 3 million Americans are impacted by this inflammatory condition that affects the digestive tract and can greatly impact quality of life, disrupt daily routines, and carry very real emotional burdens. Symptoms of IBD include bloating, constipation, diarrhea, urgency, painful cramping, rectal bleeding, and more.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman talks to his UltraWellness Center colleague Dr. George Papanicolaou about the Functional Medicine approach to treating inflammatory bowel disease. They identify root causes and discuss why the health of your microbiome is vital when it comes to treating IBD. IBD is autoimmune in nature and may be helped by following autoimmune protocols also covered in this episode.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health, a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

You have posted several videos about getting healthy gut flora if you have already have significant problems. I wish you would post a preventative video (for those of us that don’t have gut problems but would like to remain healthy). We don’t need intense elimination diets. We need a framework that we can use for the rest of our lives

Sounds like you avoid antibiotics like azithromycin, to make sure your microbiome stays in tact. Also stick with whole foods and non processed foods. Be careful with overdoing anything, like smoking, drinking alcohol, drinking coffee.

@christianthames2302
@christianthames2302 Жыл бұрын
I only watched the first person so far, but he said exactly what he did to cure many people: AIP diet for those who aren't too far gone, and the elemental diet for those who can't even do the AIP diet. This ensures the person is not adding to the inflammatory condition and allows the mucosal lining to heal. Then the introduction of probiotics to reseed the gut. He said many people had a complete elimination of symptoms within 6 weeks.

@@christianthames2302 Hey Christian, sorry for the late response ... only just discovered you'd messaged. Thank you for that, but still ... they don't talk about a "cure" ... as such ... they are merely talking about all the things one can do to minimize SYMPTOMS ... using diet ... people still have flare-ups throughout their lives ... which still compromises the quality of their lives ... which means they are not "cured" ... the ideas they talk about are not new or revolutionary ... nor life-changing ... they've been around for a long time. Remember ... these talks aren't some kind of magnanimous gesture ... otherwise they'd be bursting at the seems sharing information on TRULY ... how to cure. They are merely selling themselves ... in order to make money from naive people who are desperate ... ESPECIALLY Hyman!

That depends on your situation, there is no diet that fits all, what works for me might not work for you. We have different microbiome, reactions to foods etc. But in general it's better to eat food that is as fresh and organic as possible, i.e. avoid toxins like pesticides and processed food. An experienced functional medicine practitioner would probably give the best guidance according to your history and blood/stool tests.

You obviously just keep reposting these videos for viewers bcuz u never answer any of my questions. I’ve reached out trying to find out if your taking patients bcuz my situation is getting worse just when I thought I was improving. My gums have suddenly randomly started bleeding. I don’t trust my convention docs anymore bcuz all they want to do is give drugs. They keep saying they don’t see anything else only high inflammation markers. But after dealing with pain for 3-4 months I started losing weight and having burning and nervous anxious type feelings constantly in my stomach. I don’t know what to eat anymore. Ive been trying to connect with Dr Hyman for the last 6-7 months. they want to promote their business and show their knowledge but when we come knocking nobody answers

I went through what you are describing. Please try this… Eat potatoes yams carrots peas celery and chicken breast in a crockpot with bone broth, overnighted cooked well. This and water. If your real bad you might have to blend this to start . I’m at 85% now but I eat and drink mostly what I want now including coffee and occasional alcohol. I was real bad 2 years ago and lost 30 lbs in a two to three week period . I hope this works for you,good luck

@@abukarabdirahman7846 stress is not something u can snap your fingers and remove. yes years of stress probably gave me low grade inflammation but the new stress of how suddenly everything exploded on me is something i can’t just stop especially when i feel like my life is draining away. with no real answers from docs who only know how to give painkillers and immunosuppressive drugs. ive been working on my elimination diet for the last since dec-jan once i realized i was reacting to food with severe pain and swelling throughout the night and following days. just when i think i can eat something, I eventually react to it. feels like my immune system is shutting down. nuts, wheat, gluten, dairy, red meat, processed foods and some veggies have been removed. I would be good for a week or two then it would start again. my weight loss had leveled off at 129-130 for about 4 months then i started to put a few lbs back then after another two weeks i’d lose it all again and more. add 5 then lose 7-8lbs. Ive been doing breathing exercises and cold n hot showers, fasting for 3 days a week for a cpl months and NOTHING seems to stick!

@@kerryvbc1 i was really fit and active when this started. u see my logo? i was about to get my mobile juice business off the ground when this all started. Ive been doing bone broth every now and then. i can’t eat chicken bcuz i now react to that. i seem to be ok with beef and calf liver and salmon or fresh fish. I react to potatoes as well. most nightshade veggies. I am not absorbing nutrients properly from my food. my index fingers have been swollen for the last 3 months. they would swell over night and go down once i get up but then stopped going down. same with the outside/bottom of my feet below the small toe were the pad is. have a big hard painful ball there every morning when i get up. it goes down a little after 10-15 mins of moving around but have no idea why they swell there. just woke up one morning 3-4 months ago and it was there and just stayed. I can no longer where shoes bcuz they get worse. i feel something crunchy when i rub the back of my neck which spreads pain down into my arms and sometimes i cant even raise my arms or use my hands. a few times i had lock jaw . one day it would be the left side then next day right side. this is really crazy and random. most days my energy is really good but muscles are weak if that makes sense. when my neck hurts really bad i get nauseous at times. i was getting stronger a few months ago and was doing resistance bands to keep some muscle tone but then i would be i pain the next day or neck stiffness. i noticed if i do manage to get good sleep which is rare i feel much better. when i don’t get sleep my symptoms worsen.

What evidence is their that the stomach lining is damaged in people with autoimmune conditions and that it needs to be repaired? Furthermore what evidence is their that cutting out food can achieve this objective? I thought we where talking about the micro-biome, what does a damaged stomach lining have to do with the micro-biome? Are these men doctors?
@christianthames2302
@christianthames2302 Жыл бұрын
I'm not a doctor, but damage to the mucosal lining can cause autoimmune symptoms. I got an antibiotic called azithromycin and ever since my digestion was messed up and I'm now diagnosed with IBS-C (the constipated version), where I never had any issues at all before with motility. Now when my mucosal lining is weak (I can tell because I feel "dry" in my intestines, and I get irritation as food passes through), certain foods can cause total autoimmune symptoms like joint pain in areas that I never did anything to. It sucks to have your wrist or knee start hurting for no reason after you eat something.

@christianthames2302
@christianthames2302 Жыл бұрын
@@Stsebastian8900 my sister has IBS-D. I think that certain foods probably cause the body to want to evacuate, which is what causes the diarrhea. Perhaps there's a bacterial imbalance from antibiotic use. I've seen people who were lactose intolerant, cure it by drinking spoiled milk. The idea is that spoiled milk is spoiled because there are too many bacteria in there eating the milk and changing it's composition. The reason why someone would drink it is because like a probiotic, it's full of bacteria that eat milk (the very thing they had a problem digesting). So perhaps, missing key strains of bacteria can cause a person to have digestive issues because they're missing the bacteria required to digest that thing. As far as bloating when eating fiber. That makes me think that you have bacteria in there that are eating fiber before allowing it to pass through the colon like it's supposed to. Perhaps from sibo (bacteria in the small intestine instead of large intestine), or slow motility. Have you ever had your vitamin D tested?
