Most people are familiar with certain histamine conditions, such as the development of a welt from a bee sting or hives from a peanut allergy. However, symptoms ranging from brain fog to digestive problems, menstrual cycle problems, nausea, vomiting, edema, palpitations, and anxiety can all also result from issues of histamine intolerance. Unfortunately, this issue commonly goes undiagnosed, often resulting in years of ongoing frustration and suffering among individuals struggling to find the cause of their mysterious symptoms.⁣

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to talk about how they work with patients to get to the root cause of histamine intolerance. They discuss the rising prevalence of mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), how gut health influences histamine, and much more.⁣

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.⁣

It's shocking. They can't even spend a decent amount of time to talk to you to get to the bottom of why you're feeling ill. They make a diagnosis and prescribe pills. Then they will have you running back and forth to monitor your symptoms or adjust medications. It's such a big business.

My son has been suffering, basically a recluse, unable to eat almost anything. He’s only 23. We’ve spent thousands of dollars for an IBS diagnosis. Yet he’s no better. He’s gotten to the point where he hates being hungry, hates his life. I’ve been praying so hard & he just “stumbled across” the idea of histamine sensitivity. It checks all the boxes. For the first time in years he has hope.

I was finally diagnosed with Lyme just in time as they were treating me for ALS. I was born with rare congenital complications so have some of the top doctors in the world. Ive seen numerous specialists and nutritionists. Yet, no one has mentioned histamine intolerance. I just came across this information a few days ago and started the diet. I can only eat fresh thawed meat. NO LEFT OVERS. I’m now going carnivore to get away from all the histamine veggies and fruits...also get off tea and coffee, chocolate. If you’re having a flair up...get somewhere cold. I use ice wherever I itch or a rash. I do take Benadryl only about once a week. Cool showers help. Also look out for oxalates. I avoid anything processed. Go as organic as possible. Plants make me ill. I live on grass fed beef, organic butter, pork, cage free eggs, cage free chicken. Meat is ok but not left over meat. @@crazydaizy915 technically, plants should NOT be considered food for humans. We are adapted so that we CAN eat them if no animal foods are around and we won't be killed right away (by most, some plants are more deadly when not processed correctly - poke sallet, red kidney beans and other beans, plus more), but plants don't want to be eaten (evidenced by the antinutrients that they contain, since they can't fight or run away).

My husband had an oral allergy for over 15 years, he couldn't eat any fresh fruit and vegetables without throwing up. I mentioned this to a gastroenterologist I was seeing and he said ask him to try a good probiotic. So went online and found an article about this topic, histamine intolerance. Sounded really familiar because he has really bad seasonal allergies too. The article suggested using a probiotic with three specific strains of bacteria. Found a product that fit the bill and after a month or two of using it, he finally found the courage to eat an orange. It worked! He hasn't looked back since then. For anyone with this problem it might be worth trying probiotics. Will look for the article if anyone is interested in this topic.

So tired of depression being thrown at all of us if we’re tired. I have hypothyroidism and Drs. Won’t address it. I’m healing myself now. Thank you again. When you want to do but can’t, that’s definitely NOT depression. Depression is the definition of feeling weighted down. It’s the body’s way of making us stop what we’re doing and take care of our physical to fix the mental. In struggled for 10 years and no med fixed it. Thank you for being a pioneer in the field of functional medicine and continuing to enlighten us about it. This sounds like something that I might have as a lot of foods that I eat (even the “good” food) can cause distress in one way or another. I suffer from random attacks from rash breakouts to huge hives that the cause has been idiopathic in nature. Throughout the years I have discovered, on my own, some of the causes, like wearing pierced earrings has caused my lips to swell but only 1/2 of a lip at a time and in different sections. So weird! Food and water temperature differences are also culprits. I had a breakout of lesions that sounded like ones mentioned in your video. These lesions were like scabs that you couldn’t pick off and lasted over a year. Most are gone now but I still have one on my shoulder I recently noticed that it becomes aggravated and itchy depending on what I eat. I wish I could afford to make an appointment to see you as I live in a town near your practice in Lenox but at least I will have more awareness of how the food I eat affects me. I have been on a health journey for a few years now and have made some progress and have had some set backs but watching you and other pioneers in the field has made my journey somewhat easier. This video in particular was most helpful. Thanks again for being brave enough to go forward while you were being mocked and dismissed. Just taking the H1 and H2 blockers has relieved my horrible anxiety and depression. I am so amazed! Thank you for your knowledge and following through with research and sharing!!!

I believe everyone should have a functional or neuropathy doctor no question. Unfortunately it costs more to be healthy. But functional doctors/neuropathic doctors are what modern doctors wish they were and I mean that. All doctors come into the field to help people, the problem is they get into a environment set up to screw not only doctors over such as the money they owe not to mention the finances needed T o keep a business open is ridiculous causing a secondary reaction of charging more, but it often injures the patient... Unfortunately now the doctors are stuck in this broken field set up against everyone. But functional doctors realized this and broke free... Started their own practices and actually aim to get to the root where as modern docs focus on treating the symptoms

Yes! and a dirty DAO (balances POWERFUL histamine) is only ONE, (particularly nasty when broken) of 7 detox pathway genes better known as your digestive tract which not only digests nutrition, but also drives your immune system and is directed by your thyroid. MTHFR is another common one. Most who have one busted one will have others. Unlucky have 4 or more. An MD will say if you cannot methylate, you cannot live. THEY are WRONG. Directly tied to neurotransmitter issues as well.... off the rails Hello with CNS problems from B12 and Folate deficiency. MTHFR people need methylated B12 which is found in primarily in whole foods . Enrichments in processed foods are synthetics a compromised MTHFR metabolism cannot process. So you may show high B12 in blood yet still be grossly deficient in body. That fubars your entire metabolism. Messes with your iron, which can go toxic. (Hemochromatosis) Now your blood cannot carry enough oxygen the right way, and you eventually oxidize too much Iron. That can lead to a lot of nasty health shit including cancer. Ben Lynch book Dirty Genes and The end of Alzheimer's by Dale Bredensen.... all you need to understand your body and heal it.

I paid hundreds for blood tests and was shocked to discover how many foods l was allergic to. I had nearly all of the symptoms described on this video.... Lucky for me, in my late 50's an acupuncturist diagnosed me with histamine intolerance. Life changing. I had wasted thousands of dollars on doctors who gave me advice that made it much worse. Excellent interview. My functional medicine doctor suspected that many of my symptoms were related to a histamine intolerance so he added DAO to my daily supplements and it sure has made a difference. I have been dealing with leaky gut due to celiac disease, SIBO, and Candida, so high histamine foods cause me mast cell activation syndrome. My condition has caused many symptoms as mentioned in this podcast, ie: headaches, sinusitis, nausea, anxiety which leads to insomnia, chronic fatigue, joint pain, itchy eyes, multiple food sensitivities, and just feeling miserable. I am on a limited diet trying to stick with protein, vegetables and healthy fats, but I had added a lot of prebiotic foods to help heal my gut but so many of these healthy foods create too much histamine in my body. Adding DAO has helped me digest and has taken away so many of my histamine symptoms. This is a great interview to share because most people, including doctors, are clueless about the role of histamine in health problems. Thank you for sharing this.

Or 1/3 cup of carbs per meal. So my plate is half veges, 1/4 protein and a 1/4 starch..fruit only a 1/3 cup and never with a meal and wonderful fats! Olive oil, grass fed butter, ghee, grated 100% chocolate on my coffee..nothing processed..full fat Greek yogurt and intermittent fasting! Once you get clean see what your body can handle..I know what tricks mine off and that is processed, sugar laden food. So sorry for the rant, and sure Hope it helps!

My plate was protein, veggies steamed and raw, lots of olive oil, apple cider vinegar and now 1/3 cup of starch and I made sure that is what I ate last and made it like a dessert because I eradicated sugar. For supplements omega 3, methylated B, Magnesium, zinc carnosine, and when flare ups UVA ursi tea. I am an avid excerciser as well and it’s important to keep your muscles toned as you age. Get rid of all processed foods, especially flour products unless you are able to get European made products..then if you want start adding in to what you can tolerate. Fats, protein and lots of veggies and now a great glass of wine with dinner!

I had to diagnose myself with MCAS because my doctor is oblivious. I made a playlist with the best videos I could find describing how to diagnose and treat it : kzbin.info/aero/PLuMzmJohtr1WjOzOqTU0V-2mNVtkf3XWg

This is great. Second time I’m watching this episode, will probably watch it a third time. Like what other people have said, I went to seven different doctors with my weird and extremely painful, but intermittent symptoms. They all literally shrugged their shoulders. I’m healthy, my blood work numbers are excellent, they said I was fine, we don’t know what you have. Anyway … I finally figured out it’s a histamine issue, made changes that helped, then found a truly amazing nutritionist who has helped MONUMENTALLY! You should have her on your show, she’s a local gem, she really saved my life. No exaggeration. But it’s also KZbin and shows like this one that have saved my life. Thank you. Many, Many Thanks!

Thank you. I’m 5 years recovering from Babesiosis, mycoplasma pneumonaie, chronic EBV, Bartonella, fibromyalgia etc....undiagnosed Lyme disease. Double vision is my big issue now, have risk lenses. Itchy skin lately, have had 4 squamous cell skin cancers removed from my face and arms during this time, I’m now going to research histamine thanks to this podcast

Years ago I was diagnosed with Mastocytosis. It just came on one day and for one year my life was miserable, and then it disappeared. Listening to this talk, it makes sense now why certain foods effect me the way the do... it's histamine intolerance. It's awful too.

@@wk8000 For mastocytosis? It's very different, depending on what kind you have, I believe there are multiple. But essentialy histamine reactions in many ways from skin rashes to allergic reactions. I don't have it anymore tho :)

I also had mastocytosis once unexpectedly in 2006. Never knew what triggered it but a massive dose of cortisone got rid of it but made me very sick. I do have other symptoms of histamine intolerance (I.e. sinusitis, asthma, insomnia, bowel issues and periodic hives). I am going to try eliminating foods high in histamines and hope it works

I have h-EDS and a histamine issue. It was mild until I got sick with "C". I now have long/post "C" because of the major increase of histamine being produced in my body. I have been to so many doctors over the years. I finally gave up. I have had to become my own doctor. Thank goodness for the internet. I so wish that other doctors would watch videos like these.

There is a direct connection, I also bet you have MTHFR & DAO gene mutations. Ask me how I know 😊 have you had your plasma histamine level checked??
