Thanks for the solid info....decided to order a KS5000 yesterday based on the info in this video. I will be replacing 2 Viparspectra P2500 and a Unit Farm UFL3000 in a 4x4 tent. This set up does quite well but at 700 watts. Summers are hot where I am so the 500w fixture will be a welcome addition. I was also considering a Mars FC-E4800 or a Kingbrite array. Decided to go with the KS based off of this video as well as the performance of my 2 Vip P2500's! Thanks again!

What's your opinion on adding additional far red beyond the normal red diodes most LED bar lights include? And your opinion on UV lighting? I only find data on terpene production and nothing on THC content. Need some solid advice before i add to the grow and make some videos on it.
@twentytwo1382 жыл бұрын
Hi, i know you'd prefer an answer by Coco but i'll try to answer what i've learned so far. - IR or Far-Red to be more precise: causes stretching in plants, boosts flowering speed and bud production, heats the leaf surface, helps with plants sleeping and waking up (Emerson effect), penetrates deep into canopy, makes the lower branches catch up with higher branches to create a more even canopy, and high amounts of IR can also help with SOME pests if they can't stand the heat, but you'd only get that with the Sun's high IR that goes up to 1000nm, you won't get that with 730nm in LED. High amounts of IR can also make the buds a bit fluffier, which isn't a bad thing if you have high humidity, with more airflow in the buds there is less chance for budrot. - UVA produces more terpenes, flavor and aroma. UVB produces more THC. You need both UVA & UVB together for the best results. Roughly about 15% UVB and 75% UVA but this can vary. For the best results, the UVB wavelength needs to be between 280-290nm because this triggers a certain protein in plants for more THC, and this protein also acts as a defense mechanism against pests, and also acts as a sunscreen so the plant produces more oils to protect itself. Not to say that 310-315nm UVB won't get results, but 280-290nm triggers this specific protein (i think it's called UVR8 or something like that) Also UVB helps to prevent mold and mildew. It will NOT kill an ongoing mold infestation, but it will help prevent it. Although this is debatable because some people say that mold has a defense mechanism against UV that is activated during the day, and deactivates during the night. People say you need to run UV during night cycle to prevent mold. However, mold doesn't grow in the Sun, and the Sun kills the mold even during the day, so personally i don't think it's only helpful during night cycle, i think it's helpful all the time. Don't go below 280nm, that is UVC and it will burn the plants, that is used for sterilization. The best way to use UV is in the middle of the light cycle, let's say you run 12/12 during flowering, you should use UV around the 6 hour-mark of normal light to simulate the Noon or highest peak of the Sun. If you have autoflowers on 18/6 this would be around 9 hour-mark. Start with 15-mins a day, then increase by 15 mins every few days until you see a little bit of burn damage, then decrease the amount of time. The closer the UV, the shorter the time needed, the further away the longer time is needed. UV is best used at the end of the flowering, in the last 2 weeks. The reason is that UV slows down the growth. It acts as a mini-stress for the plant so they spend some energy into recovering from UV. This recovering process from UV stress is what creates more THC and terpenes. But you can use it all the time if you want, outdoors they always get UV. Since UV falls into the blue side of the spectrum, it also makes the plant more compact, and if used for the whole grow period it can make the buds a bit smaller but denser. But with IR this effect is balanced and countered.
@TriStateTrichomes2 жыл бұрын
@@twentytwo138 Great info and since i posted this i found a lot of what you have mentioned, mostly through Bruce Bugbee and the effects of red/blue light on plants. As well as the penetration of red and also green photons. However some of what you stated on UV lighting i did not find and i would be interested to learn more and the source of this information. I did find UV and its ability to help prevent mold or even pathogens (seemed very slight). I also found research on how the plant produces secondary cannabinoids to use as a sunblock. There was a single study about THC content increase but it was done on hemp and this was on i believe the leaf of the plant and was a an insignificant change. Bruce Bugbee also covered this study and mentions it has not been replicated in the lab to show an increase in UV. So if you have further data i am all ears and would love to look into it. At this time UV is a no go for me and if far red is added i believe most company's are adding 730 /760 then i don't see it as a great add to value considering the price increase they seem to come with. But i have no experience with them myself. So this is all based on research ive done.

I think thats the biggest difference. Alot of lights arent designed specifically for tent sizes. Diode positioning and fixture size play a key role in this to achieve the most even level par possible. Migro also did a great job with their aray series.

I test lights at the height that produces a maximum PPFD of 1000 umol/m2, which is the level that is safe for plant and which most lights are designed to hit. In a grow tent, hanging heights of 12-24" above the canopy are common. Most growers prefer lights that can be hung closer because they run out of vertical room in their tents. At higher heights you get a better distribution, but lower overall amount of light because of reflective and overspill losses. It is fine to run lights higher while plants are growing and then dial them in once the settle down during the flowering period. Grower Love
