So you're telling me, they believe a powered off drone is connecting to my Wifi with an ultra low battery draw that the router doesn't see and it never drains the battery and is capable of sending massive amounts of video and photography data? And all of this happens with no breadcrumb trail to follow that shows any kind of substantial proof? Meanwhile all of our smart devices are listening to every conversation and directing targeted advertising campaign to our PC's without ever typing those products into a search bar. If China has that kind of technology to use drones while they are powered off, the drones are the last thing we have to worry about with them.

Back a few years ago DJI had a data breach. In this data it was discovered what they were collecting and sending back. Since this is about the DJI "camera" drones that rely on the DJI app it's 100% possible. Google "DJI Sentinel" and you can see for yourself.

I can't imagine any of my residential projects in either real estate or architecture will influence anything in regards to our national security. There is no way that what they are getting from the drones is that substantially better than what they can infer from satellite imagery. If they are that concerned, maybe they should set up no fly zones over the areas they deem to be "critical". Problem is they don't give a rip about us. We all know that US manufacturers got lobbyists in the right position. They can say whatever they want at this point to try to justify the ban. None of it matters. Only money talks.

If the drone is connecting to a wifi network and transferring information it would be easily auditable. You can see the device on your network and via a traffic dump see that it was communicating. To be able to do what is being claimed, it would require the device have power, which we have not been able to see on any motherboards of disassembled drones. Additionally, let us assume they do have this ability, then they would need to have a way to communicate, which would require the PRC to have installed stations throughout the continental US to receive that data. I'm finding these claims hard to rationalize. I've love to see evidence that we can dive into from a technical perspective.

An iPhone (made in China - as is every iPhone) has exponentially more processing, data, image, video and audio collection/distribution capabilities than any DJI drone (or any non-military drone of any make). Plus, an iPhone travels everywhere the user goes 24/7. Our company has 3 DJI drones which we use in our work. All connect to our Wi-Fi to load maps and missions. We monitor the I/O data traffic to/from any device on our network, including the DJI drones. Not once has any of our DJI devices connected to the Wi-Fi when we didn't want them to and we see no indication that they have ever moved data in the middle of the night or at any time in some unauthorized way. What they have done is be useful mechanically and technically reliable platforms that have done exactly what we asked them to - no more, no less.

HOGWASH. Take the battery out of the drone. No power, no data to send unless there is some new kind of physics I am un aware of that the CCP has access to. As far as the controller is concerned if you don't have a WIFI signal it can't transmit and if your concerned about the controller accessing the internet then don't connect to the internet with the controller. NONE of this has anything to do with opsec for the US and everything to do with propping up a very behind and poorly ran US drone manufacturing base as well as lining the pockets of the congresspersons involved in the legislation. I am all for security and I'm an America first person but Jesus this is stupid. We allow TikToc to pollute our youth and every phone you have sends data to Alphabet or Apple constantly and we are worried about a consumer drone? The problem is that YOU the average American has access to a device which the US government has deemed a security risk...not from the CCP...but YOU the American Citizen. We do not use these drones in critical infrastructure and in fact the drones that are less than 250G are not used by any agency to my knowledge. I will give you that large drones that are capable of transporting a payload pose a risk...fine ban them.

Classified info is what is driving the ban. You are not going to see that unless it’s declassified and the odds of that are next to zero. The sources and methods used to obtain the classified data are also very sensitive. The facts are we and DJI have a problem. I would like to keep using mine but DJI’s privacy policies and nefarious data collection practices among other issues has caused this problem. It’s not about hating DJI it’s about their company practices tied to the communist Chinese government.

Senators don't care enough to dig into the facts. We're screwed, this is the response I got from my senator: Thank you for contacting me regarding the Chinese espionage activities in the United States. I always appreciate hearing from Tennesseans. In February, the incursion of a Chinese surveillance balloon into U.S. and Canadian airspace deliberately violated U.S. airspace and displayed an unabashed disregard for U.S. sovereignty and international law. Since the first balloon, more unidentified objects have been detected in North American airspace. On February 7, I sent a letter to President Biden requesting a greater display of strength and transparency when dealing with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Tennessee is home to U.S. Army, Air Force, and Navy assets, and the security of our nation remains my paramount concern. Combatting the CCP’s influence in the U.S. is among my top priorities. You may be assured that I will keep your thoughtful comments in mind should legislation regarding Chinese espionage activities come before the full Senate.

I think the “facial recognition” term is being used out of context. We all know how the drones can use “follow me” mode…so yes technically it does use visual data for “facial recognition”. But I’m sure that these drones are not identifying individuals. With that said, even a simple picture from a cell phone, if sent anywhere, could be analyzed using facial recognition. The situation with DJI is a mess. I have bought two drones, the Mini 4 Pro and the Avata kit complete with the goggles and flight controller. I don’t know if the bad will ground my drones, but it so, so be it. I will try to sell them to a buyer from our of the country if needed. Otherwise they could be come paperweights, or worse, sent to a landfill at some point. It’s a real shame that all of this is happening.
