An interesting perspective. We really are going to see an immense evolution in weapons tech in the next 5 years. If we are all still here that is.

Oh. Sweet. Just People vs drones is already really wild as it looks like extreme skeet shooting. Tanks will always be an integral part of the battlefield and drones would simply be another part of the toolkit to combatants.

Yes. Tanks will.just become significantly less relevant compare to systems that give good recon and accurate and devastating firepower. The Ukrainians, who should've already learned this lesson by now, are going to learn it good and hard when all those western tanks they're stupidly betting the farm on because they don't understand this are scrap heaps and/or Russian museum pieces.

This was a great interview. Your questions were a little stiff at times. Please do more interviews! I learned a lot.

I'm not entirely sure the tank will have a role quite as small as "just mopping up" but it's very much the case that it's unlikely to spearhead attacks into prepared enemy defenses. What will happen is that many attacks will have taken place by longer range systems as he stated, and then once enough attrition has occurred, the tanks begin the manuever phase as you try to flank and break further lines. 😊

This is a complex situation but the simplest way to say it is. Tanks are a known quantity, we know generally what they do, how they work and how to use them. Drones are an unknown quantity for the most part, they have a lot of room left to grow, use, and advance the technology at a rapid pace, where tank technology is advancing slower because it's BEEN advancing for nearly a century.

Problem with drones is the same as their advantage. Because they're disposable, it's pretty easy to test means of countering them. It should be pretty easy to train people for counter-drone operations

But as a follow up topic, in what ways could all this autonomous technology and advances within IT affect tank design? I constantly hear the crew being brought up as the reason for why good tanks are good and bad tanks are bad. Consequently we've also evolved away from the behemoths of WWI to these much more human vehicles - some of them even featuring kettles. So surely it stands to reason that if you could enhance, do away with, or even just move members of said crew around, whole new designs for tanks could be made viable, right?

Very late to the game, but the only thing that can actually replace a tank is another "armored direct fire platform with all terrain high mobility", just like how it is the combination of motorization, mechanization and armored that really replaced the thing called "cavalry". The drone-replace-tank debate was just like attack-helicopter-replace-tank debate quite some years ago, but with internet connection, and more intelligent targeting platform.

Regarding.....SMALL COMMERCIAL HOBBY DRONES.....and only those....would it be possible to fit UPGRADED, claymore mines to the top of tanks to kill drones directly overhead? Maybe instead of weighing about 3.5 pounds with 700 balls have a ten pound unit with 2000 smaller balls inside. As soon as you get a signal it is directly overhead and you are buttoned up just set it off and maybe take out a small quadcopter overhead.Just a thought.

Would just scratch the paint. Now if the drone was carrying something like a downward firing EFP, THAT would be terrifying.

A drone would have to be within a few tens of yards for a claymore-type device to be effective.

well the concern now is if there's infantry and the other external equipments, such as the sights wether periscope or cameras, the auxilliary pieces like MGs, or even the tank crew's effects. while the idea is kind of understandable, it's at best no different from a ERA block albeit even more complicated due to the said control by the crews, not only that, but it would also be quite expensive for a one time means of defense against easily procurable drones and munitions. APS already does better by being able to also intercept some munitions, but could also work against drones, while being a simple addition to an existing platform and can react faster than the crew can acquire the presence of the threat and is able to act accordingly. the best way a tank crew can avoid being eliminated, is if those who employ them on a conflict also deploy necessary equipment alongside the tanks, AFVs like SPAA or even IFVs.

Now that the major military powers have seen what drones can do they'll massively invest in hunterdrones that will go and hunt for attack drones and destroy them before they can assault tanks or entrenched positions... and we'll see a return of large numbers of AA vehicles with fast firing autocannons or machine gun multiples. Long term with the advances of secure channel long distance remote control Tanks will also turn Unmanned vehicles.
