Holly's Soapmaking

Күн бұрын

I created this eucalyptus mint soap using a drop swirl followed by a few passes with a hanger swirl tool. I took the final photos about 4 days after cutting the soap. You'll probably notice the color change that occurred. This usually happens for me when using indigo in a wispy swirl where I have areas of very light blue. The darker blue areas seem to stay the same and don't fade.
Thank you so much for watching!

DISCLAIMER: I make these videos to share my own personal methods for how I make cold process soap. These videos are not intended as tutorials for beginners, but they are intended for those who already have an understanding of cold process soap making. Cold process soapmaking involves working with sodium hydroxide. Lye & raw soap can damage eyes & burn skin. When making soap, you should know and practice lye safe handling procedures. While I hope you find watching my videos helpful, many variables go into making soap & even the smallest change can affect results; therefore, I'm not liable or responsible for your results if you try any of the methods that I use.

Hi everyone! I can't believe I managed to get another video posted this month. LOL I hope you're all doing well! 💕 In case you were curious about the merchandise section you may be seeing on my channel... I was asked recently why I love making soap so much. All of these different reasons immediately came to mind and gave me an idea for a graphic design. I initially planned on having just one t-shirt made for myself, then I thought the graphic might also resonate with some of you. So I opened a Teespring store and linked it here on my channel. The items are made to order, so it takes about a week or so before they ship. In case you're curious about the fit, I usually wear a small, but I found I needed a medium in the women's t-shirts. 😊 Thank you so much for watching the video! - Holly

Holly, Love this soap design and the color. I am learning to make soap from in person classes, online tutorials (mostly yours) and books, I have a question about the color additives. When mixing the indigo root powders with the sunflower oil in this video, was the sunflower oil used taken from the amount in the recipe or did you use additional sunflower oil outside of the recipe oil amount? The same question goes for the green clay that you mixed with the distilled water. Was the distilled water you used part of the water discount amount or was it additional distilled water used outside of the required water discount? Love your videos and appreciate all of the help you impart in your processes.

Hi Holly, You're my favourite soap maker, I'm addicted! I just wanted to ask 2 questions: you always refer to indigo root powder but as far as I know, the colour is made from the indigo plant's leaves, not the roots - just wondered if I'm missing something? Secondly, when you pre mix your colours with oils or water, do you take those liquids from your base recipe ingredients or are they additions. Thankyou.

Holly, love your videos and design! Question, What does leaving the oven light on do for the soap?
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! It just helps the oven stay warm a bit longer giving me a better chance that the soap will go through gel phase. If I leave the light on all night, the soap will stay in gel phase too long (possibly causing glycerin rivers). Turning it off after about 3 to 4 hours seems to be just enough. Thanks for asking!

Hi Holly, I have a question about mixing milk and oils. I have Amanda Aaron's book on making goat milk soaps, she has a formula for mixing water and goats milk to get your water amount and milk, now, can you use this formula for all milk recipes or just hers? I tried asking her in a text, but she doesn't answer, I thought you'd know, or tell me how you do yours? I would very much appreciate it? Thank you.

Hi! Sorry it has taken me so long to answer comments! Except for my one Coconut Milk Soap video where I used 100% coconut milk, I have always used the half water/half milk method (called the milk-in-oil method) for any milk soap...coconut, almond milk, buttermilk, etc. I use half the water required (plus a little extra just to be safe...about 14 grams) to dissolve the sodium hydroxide, then put the other half into the oils as milk (whichever milk or combination of milk you want to use - provided they're in liquid form and not powder). Hope this helps! If you need help with specific recipe numbers or anything, just let me know! Oh, if you haven't tried this milk technique already, just be aware that the lye solution will be very strong and get very hot. When I do strong lye solutions, I usually use half ice and half water for the water part (or all ice like Teri does from Tree Marie Soapworks). That keeps the temperature and fumes way down. 😊

Thank you for using naturally derived colours. Mica is mined in India, which is the worlds largest producer of mica, by children as young as 7 and 8 years old. The mines are narrow shafts which can fit smaller bodies, and needs smaller hands to mine the product. I can’t see how anybody can classify that as ‘vegan’ or ‘natural’ or ‘ethical’. 😢
