Pleased to read that you’ve found why you may be suffering with the ball striking and direction currently… yes it’s so important that this move is done correctly, no spine tilt away from the ball, stay over and allow the arms to set the club first in position as the downswing starter!

Another excellent video Harry on "dropping the arms into the slot" for an effortless golf swing! I will definitely continue to work on this dropping the arms to an extended right arm position, with a right palm and left glove hand logo down prior to rotating the body. To me, this is the most simple and effortless way to make the golf swing. Well Done As Usual Harry! Keep up the good work!!!

Hi Harry - great instructional video. Thank you. The question I have for you is: is this new? I have seen a lot of great instruction recently on “pulling the chain”, swinging inside out etc. It certainly works for me with the added benefit that I can slow my swing down, be in more control and still achieve the same distance but now with greater accuracy and consistency. Can your next videos be on tips and drills for achieving compression with irons and turning the hands over through the strike zone?

@martha584 great question and this just really depends more on what you're struggling to achieve in your golf swing and the tendencies you have in your swing. So i would, if you can take a look over your golf swing and have a look at the issues you find, then listening into these two videos again and seeing if you can match the tendencies i talk about, whichever is the match is the one you want to focus on. If you're still unsure, download Skillest and reach out to me, i can take a look at your swing and provide personalised feedback.

I used this move in my league yesterday, and it worked great.. This is so counter-intuitive, to straighten arm early, but I was making some really good contact with a majority of the shots. I usually turn the hips immediately, on downswing, but felt like I had to delay just a bit as right arm straightens. I thought I might hit fat shots are arms felt like they were trailing a lot, but I really didnt have any issue with fat shots.

@leemartin11227 ай бұрын
Hi Harry, no not yet. I've been practicing this in my garden. I tried a similar move before but I never really realised the reason I couldn't do it was because I tend to be all arms, hence the casting. Another problem I have is that I can swing OK on the range but then on the course I seem to tense up, worry about ball contact, and revert to a stiff armsy swing..

Good one to point out there John. It's key when doing something new in the golf swing (making changes) to do this deliberately slow, then building it up. Thanks for commenting!

I've always seemed to struggle initiating the downswing and ended up either pushing my hip forward, or throwing out my arms out in an attempt to turn through the swing.. Just tried this in my net and it feels it feels much more natural. I did seem to pull quite a few shots left, but far more consistent ball stikes.
@harryshawgolf6 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting, pulling the shots a touch to the left could imply that you’re not holding the angle from stage two then to the ball… hold the angle and continue to rotate. This way the shaft lean will help keep the face more open (square) and hit straighter shots.
@nickcam212 ай бұрын
Hi Harry, great video. This alignment stick drill has helped me hit nice draws but my miss is over draw/hook (sometimes push when I don’t club face closed). To clarify, how should do I neutralise the over draw/hook. Through more body rotation (worried I’ll throw the arms out coming from a slice background not long ago!) Thanks again. Nick
@harryshawgolf2 ай бұрын
@nickcam21 thanks for commenting, goo to hear they are going left, as the easy fix is to hit them right. Top do that we want the face to remain more open (open for longer in the swing) so hold the angle from stage two and rotation round the body so your hands exit left. For this to make sense, contact me on skillest and we can take a look at your swing in more detail!

Great vid I think this exactly wot I need to work on.i pull a lot of shot 10yards left of target I don’t have left to right flight so would this mean I come over top or is cause I close the club face down to much
@harryshawgolf6 ай бұрын
Thanks, for someone who's doesn’t have that left to right fight i would say you'll either come over the top with the club face square to your path (aiming left of the target) therefore travels straight left or the other which could be you close the face down too much with an in to out swing path. To find out which one youtube are and how to fix it quicker than usual, we can discuss personalised tips!

@harryshawgolf5 ай бұрын
Thanks for subscribing. Glad you’ve enjoyed the video. Yes signing fast isn’t great if the fast move is initiated by firing the hips towards the target. But if it’s firing the arms down to make that drop happen sooner… you could be on for a winner!
@SeniortoscratchАй бұрын
This is great content. My instructor is having a heck of a time helping me get those hands down quickly (I’ve got some content showing that on my channel). My question is that I don’t see a lateral shift at the start of your downswing, which could also give more time to bring hands down. Do you think of a shift, or is it happening naturally?
@harryshawgolfАй бұрын
For me personally, because a lot of the students I’ve thought have the shift already (almost more of a sway) they then lean back before impact. So I encourage this movement and then rotate. That should allow you to get the body in a good position at impact. However there’s no harm in trying the shift forward maybe as you drop the arms down… as long as the body doesn’t move (rotate).

Hi Harry. Liked your video. Simple and to the point,with no impossible body positions to try a reach. This game is not easy when you are not naturally gifted. I can hit unbelievable iron shots then go out the next day and my whole technique seems to have vanished. I literally am scratching my head. Which just goes to prove I have no idea how I do it. Maybe your drill is the way to give me a swing that can be repeated time and again.
@harryshawgolf7 ай бұрын
Hi Jonathan, it totally agree and i'm pretty sure a lot of golfers if not every golfer can relate to this... one day everything goes your way and the next it's the complete opposite. And this will certainly help you if you're swinging over the top, trying to start the downswing from the lower body but don't seem to get the good results, or cast also. Let me know how you get on from using this drill, will be great to keep in touch!
@jonathanlambert70047 ай бұрын
Hi Harry Thank you for you message. Your drill was really helpful. Most of my practice is during walking the dog on the common. I get about 8 hours a week. I'm also left handed so have to reverse all the instructions. Your drill has helped with my sequencing. The less swing thoughts you have during the swing the more chance you have to develop a repeatable swing. The better players definitely have more understanding of their swing and when a bad shot occurs they can feel the mistake. Whereas players at my level start to fish in the dark and turn a bad shot into whole day of woe. I wish you luck with your channel. I pressed the subscribe button.
@harryshawgolf6 ай бұрын
Makes sense Jonathan, i think for you you'll want to focus on one or two things in your golf swing which should be most prioritised to continue to get the best results on the range and the course. And with you being left handed i can imagine it's a bit awkward having to reverse everything. I do online tuition which i can film the opposite way to help you find the parts in your swing you should prioritise in your golf swing to change without having to reverse anything.

So as long as you're ok with that... practice this in stages with driver, otherwise, use driver when you feel comfortable doing this all in one motion.

When u drop the arm in a slot quietly , what happens to hips? Do they move forward or rotate same time?
@harryshawgolf5 ай бұрын
For me when I was demonstrating this in the video the arms would come down first… as the tendency I see too often is golfers pushing the hips forward and round toe alert and forces the club to go over the top and ruins the wrist angle in the downswing.

Casting is with the wrists. If you hold the wrist angle you won’t be casting. Always a big problem for me!
@harryshawgolf7 ай бұрын
Hi Gents, yes this is correct, think of casting on the outside as the wrist angle extending (the lead wrist) also over the swing plane. The trail arm extension is a great feel (before the body rotation in the downswing) as at speed, the body will fire still and sequence everything up. Let me know if theres anything else you'd like me to clarify.

How does this concept then be integrated into your downswing videos where you are suggesting a drop of your pelvis prior to pushing off your rear leg. It seems that movement combined with this would be very hard to coordinate
@harryshawgolf5 ай бұрын
Yes it certainly would be hard to coordinate this, i can look into producing a video on this topic, or what i would also suggest is focusing on one and then the other. The body has to be moving correctly to make swing technical changes so id' suggest focusing on the body movement and therefore using the ground first.
@mitchgrossbach14325 ай бұрын
@@harryshawgolf thank you. Yes it seems there are a few downswing moves here, one being the arm drop along with a wrist move for shadowing and getting into the slot. It then seems from your other video the pelvic drop is another component of shallowing so my understanding from your response is you ultimately want to achieve both but master one before the other. Great instruction will do!
@harryshawgolf5 ай бұрын
Yes thats correct, mastering one then the other won't take as long to achieve both than doing the two in combination at the beginning because we can only focus realistically one - two things at a time in the golf swing!

If distance is not important to a golfer, is it possible to take the club back already in a slot position ??
@harryshawgolf7 ай бұрын
Very goof question and i can only see this working if you have a good turn to the top of the swing and you can get the body working correctly in the downswing... so this does still require you to learn how to sequence the downswing. But there are different ways of doing this... but this has worked brilliantly for my students so i think this will work for you too!
@inusprinsloo12572 ай бұрын
Why do other coaching vids then say the right elbow must still be bent at impact, only extending fully after impact?
@harryshawgolf2 ай бұрын
@inusprinsloo1257 that's just to help with keeping the hands a little more ahead of the club to promote shaft lean but to also help with positions during the downswing phase itself. When you try this method all in one motion you'll find that your arm will extend a little later in the swing ark. Hope this make sense.

Every golfer has different tips but you cannot take it too literally. I really think the biggest key is to take the club back squarely and like he said don’t turn your upper body and lean in because that will cause slices and pulls due to the incorrect club path. People tend to turn their upper body/shoulder typically because they put their biggest effort for a fast swing at the beginning of their down swing. So, square club on take away and putting the extra mfff after you start your swing.
@harryshawgolf4 ай бұрын
You're spot on, that's so important when watching this video and taking the keys on board, let the arms come down, this can be done fast also as long as the body doesn't rotate too early. Give this a try and let me know how you get on!

Very clear and unusually free of fluff. It makes sense too. However that position at the top seems to have a huge separation between the trail arm and the body.

@anthonyat2401Ай бұрын
@harryshawgolf Fair enough, I wondered if that were perhaps the case. I like the way you get straight on with the specific details and don't overcomplicate it with technicalities. Well up to the standard of Paul Wilson, which is a compliment indeed. I am one of those players who, in trying to stay behind the ball can often be caught hitting behind it. it seems counter-intuitive that the early straightening would help this much though. What seems to be most beneficial (for me anyway - maybe I do straighten more than most) and is one of Paul's tips on getting through the ball with the trail heel off the ground. When I and for enough to do it!

what about the idea of the arms just dropping by gravity alone?
@harryshawgolf5 ай бұрын
If your natural swing tendency is to push the shoulder more lateral on the downswing phase dropping them by gravity wont be enough. As at speed the arms will follow the shoulders and therefore get over the top and end up getting too steep onto the ball.

What about hip sway? "Breaking through the wall" ? Do you sway 4-6 inches towards the targed as the arms drop?
@harryshawgolf4 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for commenting with a great question like this. So for this movement I'd only suggesting 'breaking the wall' so shifting forward is you struggle to compress the golf ball or suffer with strike issues wit your irons. However, if you're finding that at the moment you are suffering with inconsistencies with direction, I'd suggest leaving the 'break the wall' action. Hope this makes sense!

@lgmasco7 ай бұрын
I don't think he said anything that contradicts that. the issue is that beginners usually lack body coordination so the "start the swing with your hips" swing thought makes them roll their entire body forward like he described in the video. Most of them also believe they should be intentionally moving their arms towards the ball instead of letting the hips do it. So this swing thought might help them not do that which in turn makes their swing use more hips naturally

The feel vs real concept. What this feels like wont be what it looks like in your actual swing. We don't necessarily want to see the body for this long during the full swing, but the feeling it is helps you get the body arms and club back in sync and improves the sequence.

I understand the concept but maybe I don’t understand how this works with the body turn exactly. I’m hitting behind the ball (fat) which probably means I am not turning my hips correctly or fast enough? When do you turn the hips? Is the concept to start the hip turn while throwing your arms down the plane?
@harryshawgolf5 ай бұрын
The hips will turn, if you're struggling to turn the hips you're not set up in the correct posture/ address position. If you are, its either because you're not holding this angle enough on the way through and hitting the ground first or you're struggling to transfer your weight.

Correct, he doesn't need to focus on swinging too far inside or outside as he's already only plane, but for a lot of us golfers who suffer with the casting and over the top move (the downswing fault) then this is a great way to exaggerate what we want to see on the downswing (one plane) as when you hit balls, it wont look anywhere near as exaggerated (the feel vs real concept).

Ben hogan would puke if he saw this instruction. His right shoulder lowered and his elbow was in front of the right hip and bent at impact because he started by turning the left hip and transferring the weight to the left side. He clearly said that the right shoulder lowers as a result of the turning left hip and transferring the weight. Yes if you just drop the shoulder that's bad. But if you transfer and lower as a result you won't hit it fat or thin. The left hip is key. Always has been. Always will be
@harryshawgolf6 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for commenting with your thoughts on my video. with regards to hogans move, I personally don't believe he would 'PUKE'... with the golf swing mechanics evolving/ biomechanics poor disassociation implies that the shoulders will follow the hips as they fire in the downswing... therefore limiting the room to bring the arms, hands and club back down on the reliable plane, so stalling this movement for those who struggle with Poor Flexibility and Mobility will really make a huge difference for their games. It's worked with hundreds of my students via youtube, online coaching and in person so i'd recommend trying this.
@seadonkey69135 ай бұрын
If you have read hogans book, you’d realize that he teaches a fade grip and had 6 degrees flat lies. It was a different game back then. Hogan would be swinging differently if he was born 20 years ago.

Casting is wrists. You don’t release the club until right at or just after contact.
@harryshawgolf7 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting with your thoughts guys, so for this movement golfers need to be aware that casting is caused by mainly the wrist but also the lead arm pushing away from the body when golfers take the golf club back with a very narrow arc... so narrow to wide arc causes the casting motion with the lead arm but the wrist being the main influence with the lead wrist extending too early. When you practice this in stages, the aim is to feel the trail arm straighten. But all in one motion... the trail arm will remain flexed due to speed... but its the feeling of the trail arms extending holding the angle with the hands/ wrists that will make a huge difference to your game!

@underworldevents265 Right Hand Only you can easily fully Extend the Forearm at the Elbow. However with both hands on the Grip and at a normal Swing Speed, the Right Elbow will still have some Flexion remaining at Impact and Fully Extend in the first foot or so After Impact. Find some Slow Motion Face On Swings on KZbin and slow the Playback Speed to .25 Then Focus on the Hands and the Elbows. 😉
@harryshawgolf7 ай бұрын
Hi guys, thanks for commenting, so you've both nearly got it. The reason why this contradicts what golfers say with regarding the lower body should start the downswing, and it should, but you're 90% of golfers who struggle with flexbility and mobility, you'll find it very difficult to create an effective downswing plane as the club will easily cast out in front of us and effects the low point (contanct) and club face control. This gives the arms time to sync back on the preferd plane before full rotation takes place. Also, at speed your trail arm wont be compltely straight, but the feeling of this going straight down and extending down to the gorund/ trail foot helps with syncing the club back on plane.
