Dropped out of college, started a farm

Roots So Deep (you can see the devil down there)

Күн бұрын

What did Becky’s parents say when she dropped out of college to become a farmer 15 years ago?
Let’s just say they took some convincing.
But Becky’s hard work and determination lead her through early mistakes, off-farm jobs, and hard study to master the art of developing cattle genetics and farming techniques that allow her to raise her cattle on forage only.
Now, she’s the owner of ‪@embercattle‬ running 40 momma cows on a dense, diverse forage that lets her keep more money in her pocket.
As Becky says: “I love the land. I love being out here. I love being able to make a living from it. And grazing management has been the key to doing that for me.”
You can learn more about Becky and Ember Cattle Company at: www.embercattl...

The problem is she has to sell that product to somebody that has more money than the average person cuz she has to charge extra for that meat because it costs more to raise it, so it's a very limited market unfortunately.

I had a buddy of mine visit recently and he owns a 140 acre ranch. He called it a small operation. I was very confused because that seems like a huge amount of land. In comparison to large operations it's small was his point because large operations have tens of thousands of acres. Still, that is a lot of land to me.

Forage only - the animals are raised to respect electric fence, so they move onto fresh pasture daily and several paddocks can be set up in a day with enough equipment. With no feed, no extra chemical sprays, no need for tractors, bail rings, etc, each sale is not a profit of a few dollars but greater than 60-70% of the sale of each animal. She is likely selling seed stock yearly to someone who is finishing. If she is getting over 2k an animal, she has an income of 80k in profit/pay. Her parents already had the acreage.
