I learned to my sorrow last summer that even natives need watering. We are now in our third year of extreme drought, and im watering.

Deer eat all Deer ate most of the native plants my neighbor put in. He had to fence the prairie style garden to get it to mature. So just because it is local or native does not mean deer won’t eat it, actually they mostly feed on native foliage when not devouring your garden.

About the only things they leave alone in my yard is strongly scented stuff like sage and hairy leafed stuff like mullein. They will definitely eat cactus, even the spiny nopal if they're desperate enough. About the only thing that keeps them off is like you say a good tall fence or a cattle dog, and if you go the dog route you have to train them to not bark or your neighbors will kill you.
