Ulysses Grant, in his autobiography, observed that the war with Mexico led directly to the American Civil War because the U.S. was fighting to expand slavery. We live in the area where these soldiers formed the battalion and crossed to fight on the Mexican side. The students made shamrocks, decorated the classroom door with Erin Go Bragh and were very proud. I've been retired for 5 years, but I always remember that class. They were very proud of the San Patricios. I remember them because at the end of the school year, some of them came up to me and said "I will always remember your class because I learned something that I didn't know, nobody ever taught me about the San Patricios, and that actually happen HERE, in my hometown."

When the US army prevailed, these deserters were ceremoniously hanged in gruesome circumstances. The Mexican government at the time described the nature of their deaths as “a cruel and horrible torment, improper in a civilised age and ironic for a people who aspire to the title of illustrious and humane”. A journalist covering the war described the nature of the hangings as a “refinement of cruelty”.
@drovics6 жыл бұрын
yes, horrible cruelty -- their former comrades were forced to collaborate in the process of hanging john riley and the others. most of the deserters who formed the san patricios were killed in battle, and quite a few of the survivors of the last battle made their way to mexico city, lived long lives, and reputedly had many red-haired babies.

It is now called "el Museo Nacional de las Interverciones", the national museum of interventions. I even have photos as a 5 years old mounted on the cannons that defended Churubusco. All the streets around are named cause of the Battle: "Heroes of 47" (the year), 20 of August (the day), Gral. Anaya (the Mexican commander) and without doubt "Irish Martyrs". This is the little bit of mexican History that I've always felt belongs to all us, but to me in particular. Walking to the Subway all my middle and high school I've always felt proud of those who came to die for us when they felt it was the right thing to do. Not the first time this happens, in the early 1580s as part of an English effort to support the Dutch in its 80-year rebellion against Spain. The Crown was keen to keep Ireland’s best warriors busy in Europe, lest they foment rebellion at home. Somehow en route, the predominately Catholic force pledged its allegiance to the Spanish king and spent the next four years fighting against both the English and the Dutch. For the next 200 years, Spain would employ Irish volunteers for wars in both Europe and the Americas.

Here another event worth of a song: Dating back to the Haitian Revolution, the Polish influence started in the town of Cazale. In 1802, Napoleon added a Polish legion of around 5,200 to the forces sent to Saint-Domingue to fight off the slave rebellion. However, the Poles were told that there was a revolt of prisoners in Saint-Domingue. Upon arrival and the first fights, the Polish platoon soon discovered that what was actually taking place in the colony was a rebellion of slaves fighting off their French masters for their freedom.[1] During this time, there was a familiar situation going on back in their homeland as these Polish soldiers were fighting for their liberty from the occupying forces of Russia, Prussia and Austria that began in 1772. Many Poles believed that if they fought for France, Bonaparte would reward them by restoring Polish independence, which had been ended with the Third Partition of Poland in 1795.[4] As hopeful as the Haitians, many Poles were seeking union amongst themselves to win back their freedom and independence by organizing an uprising.[1] As a result, many Polish soldiers admired their opponents, to eventually turn on the French army and join the Haitian slaves. Władysław Franciszek Jabłonowski, who was half-black, was one of the Polish generals at that time. Polish soldiers participated in the Haitian revolution of 1804, contributing to the establishment of the world's first free black republic and the first independent Caribbean state.[1] After Haiti gained its independence, the Poles acquired Haitian citizenship for their loyalty and support in overthrowing the French colonialists, and were called "black" by the Haitian constitution.[5]
