Tench Fishing : Worm Kebab Feeder Rig
The Worm Kebab Rig has become one of the most talked about tench fishing tactics in recent years. In this film I take a close look at how I tie the version of this rig that I use. It is a great tench feeder fishing rig and one that every tench angler should have in their armoury.
I find this rig works best of the more natural, low-stocked venues. It will catch anywhere, but the problem can be that it will also attract small fish as well as the hoped for tench.
I normally use chopped worm and a few maggots or casters in the feeder and plug the ends with a little fishmeal groundbait to hold the bait inside. You don't need a lot of bait with this presentation as the fish will instinctively know that it is food, so although worms can be expensive to buy (you can always collect your own), you don't actually need that many for a days fishing.
I hope you enjoy this film. Thanks for watching!

I used that rig a few days ago and it really worked well. I never thought about using 2 quick stops. I normally tie a big knot to try and stop the worm coming to far down and masking the hook. I’ll be giving that 2 quick stop rig ago next time.

I've even used a single quick stop on a hair rig using dendrobaena worms as bait for float fishing for Tench. Two worms doubled over and both cut in two to give me 4 pieces of lovely, juicy worms as bait. And some times, I'll even put a single or double red maggot on the hook too. And even though, due to ill health, I gave up fishing some 15+ years ago, I've still got the bug to go and watch loads of fishing videos 8-))... Though I never thought about using two quick stops! But my hairs are slightly longer to accommodate two worms ;-))...

One of my favourite presentations by far, makes all of the problems previously associated with fishing worms a thing of the past (bait falling off barbless hooks or masking the point). Personally I quite like using the Guru QM1 circle hooks as I find that they're a nice fine wire hook and once they're in the never come out. I'll tend to use braid in conjunction with a big method feeder if I'm fishing a harder venue but obviously they're a pain in the arse to tie so not really suited for venues where frequent hook changes are a necessity. Interestingly, cutting the worms into sections seems to deter the small perch but if I intend on catching some stripeys then I'll use the same rig but drive the bait stop about 3/4 of an inch down the length of the worm rather than going through the sides two or three times.

Will try the Kebab thing next time I go for tench, they are such a wonderfull fish to catch..😃 Normally I use corn, earthworm or maggots, but I mostly use corn because they do not attract eels, I do not want to catch eels they swallow the hooks crazy deep and are difficult to get out, without killing the fish, which I do not want to do, as they are protected and not a fish that is OK to catch..

Great video as always Paul. One question around the helicopter rig you describe, how easily would you expect the float stops to slide up the line in the event of a break off? I use this rig myself but sometimes doubt its safety as the force required to move the stop up several feet or more of line to release the hooklength from the feeder seems a lot higher, and more sustained than what is required for a running or lead clip type rig. Do you have any views on this or tricks to help the stops slide more easily?
@drpaulgarner
@drpaulgarner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, generally speaking, the stops move a lot easier when they are wet. The bottom stop normally shifts down towards the feeder when playing a fish - the upper stop also sometimes moves up during the fight, so I’m confident that they will move under pressure. A bit of saliva will also help them move. It does come down to the diameter of the line and that of the stop. You could use one of the Korda two-part chod beads and a larger bore rig swivel to make it easier to come off. Tight lines! Paul

Hi Paul, another really informative video 🙂 Do you ever get cut offs with the Heli set up, caused by the pressure and acute angle of the hooklength swivel on the mainline when playing a fish? The reason I ask is that it reminds me of fishing the “naked chod” rig for carp. I had to use a tapered bead above the lead which allowed the chod rig swivel to be pulled onto during the fight. Obviously a tapered bead above the lead or feeder in this instance wouldn’t work due to the lower rubber grip stop sliding down towards the lead/feeder during the fight. Just interested in your thoughts and whether or not cut offs are an issue with this set up? I generally use 15lb mainline for my Tench fishing due to the weedy waters where I target them. So the 15lb line can take a fair amount of abrasion before breaking. Or, would you recommend a more substantial fluorocarbon leader?

Another great video Paul and a method that’s certainly been put to good effect by a certain Mr Gribble amongst others Regarding cut offs I’m inclined to agree with comments regarding the potential for the swivel to cut the mainline.under pressure.I recall years back Jim Gibbinson explaining the helicopter rig described ( albeit with a long hooklink back then) . I used that same rig at Wilstone and lost two big tench at the net due to the swivel cutting the main line. I’ve played around with several ideas since to overcome this problem as I like the simplicity of a leaderless rig. The Korum heli kits or mounting the beads on a bit of silicon certainly offer some additional cushioning when targeting tench ( not such an issue in the winter when roach fishing) as does mounting the beads on a short length of powergum which also assists when using lighter hook links and smaller hooks in clear conditions. I’m still in two minds about fluorocarbon - I don’t believe it’s invisible ( or should I say not in the situations we use it) but it is stiff so doesn’t tangle. My gripe is it’s tendency to break for no apparent reason..- I’ve lost several big fish over the years and so stopped using it. However having watched Paul Scowen’s video using it in heavier strains I decided to give it another try in 11 pound bs for pop up maggot rigs and so far so good.... time will tell!

Hi, years ago cut-offs from the swivel angle were a big problem with heli-rigs - to the point where I stopped using them. I’m going back 30-odd years now. I found the game-changer was using modern high abrasion resistant lines. I used to work for the importer of a line manufacturer and when they developed a nylon mix that created cross bonds in the monofilament it made a massive difference. A lot of modern lines now utilise similar tech. Plus most of the lines we use are very underrated, for example a typical 0.35mm line is often cited as 15lb, but could have a tensile strength as high as 28lb! The higher diameter also reduces the chance of the swivel cutting. The upshot is that I’ve no problem using the rig naked, but a buffer bead is not going to do any harm.

Thanks Jango. Agree with all that. I use the Riverge fluorocarbons (normally Grand Max), the Berkeley 100% and previously Sufix (run out of this one a while ago so don’t have up to date experience). They’ve all proved reliable. Tight lines! Paul
