I absolutely love how this guy teaches. His voice is so calming and he makes hard concepts easy to understand.

This may sound odd, but how to you prove a way of proving? How do we know for example that there are no true statements that derive contradictions?

If S has for some reason only one element, can that element be the maximum and the minimum of the set ? Or the maximum and the minimum have to be different elements ?

Both the max and min

Hi, Dr Peyam, I have a question. In example 4, how can you show that you can actually pick an N that is greater than Snot. If you can pick such an N, does not this means Snot is not a maximum. In general, how you show N exists for all Snot?You seem to pick something that contradict to your assumption.

I like the videos in this series so far. Can I ask what course they are corresponding to? And perhaps could you tell me what the future entails for this series?

Thank you! They correspond to an intro to real analysis that I’m teaching now at UCI. I will cover everything up to Chapter 3 of Ross’ Real Analysis book

Suppose I have a set A that is a subset of the rationals on the interval (0,1). Suppose further I have a set B that is a subset of the real numbers on the interval (0,1). I know you can say the cardinality of B is greater than A, but is it possible to say B has numbers that are larger (or smaller) than any number in A?
@drpeyam4 жыл бұрын
Sadly not; given any rational number there is a real number bigger than it, and given any real number there is a rational number bigger than it
