If this mother- in- law goes to visit her son and his family, she should NOT stay in their home, but should stay in a hotel. They should conduct their visits by meeting at a park, restaurant, coffeeshop, or some other neutral place, not at their home! ( at least for the next few years .) My MIL just had heart surgery. My husband, children and I have been helping her as much as we can. Plus flowers and cards. Showing love to her just like she shows to all of us. But we started out a bit rocky. She didn’t approve of me because I had been married before. It took time. And she is a red head with a temper. But with time and patience and love, we grew close. She is a light in our lives. If you have a good mother-in-law, cherish her. ❤️

A bitchy in-law is not grounds for a divorce. Infidelity, physical or mental abuse, those are reasons to divorce. Marriage is an oath to the Lord, that cannot be broken outside of what is acceptable in the Bible. Women initiate 80% of divorces, and I noticed you have a female user name. See how quickly you were hypothetically ready to divorce over this? That's weakness because you don't want to work through anything. It's pathetic.

I agree. For the first 6 years of my marriage to my husband my mother-in-law treated me like absolute. She didn't believe I was good enough for her son. Mind you, she lived out of state so we only saw her a couple times a year. Anyway, my husband made her stop and she has only ever been nice to me since.

Geez. I live in a cottage on my daughter and son-in-law's property. I go into their house to do the laundry. I wouldn't dare touch anything. It's called respect and boundaries. When you start crossing boundaries, you're setting yourself up for conflict.
