There is laser surgery and other surgery to remove them if it's really bothering you and interfering with your daily life. However that is ONLY if it's really bothering that much and put you as a candidate as surgery. I heard eating pineapple could "help" with floater a bit by reducing floaters slightly. But don't expect pineapple to be a "cure".

I've had lots of floaters since I was a little kid. (I turn 67 in May.) I remember being outside on a clear and sunny winter day playing in the snow with some friends and asking them if they saw them, too, but they had no clue what I was talking about. Neither did my parents, who said I was "just looking for attention". They're the same people who said I was "just jealous" of another kid who got glasses when, at the age of 6, I told them I couldn't see the blackboard. I finally got glasses two years later after tricking our family doctor to test my eyes. (I saw an eye chart in his office and asked him what it was and he offered to show me how it worked and discovered i couldn't see past my nose.)

I was always in accelerated classes as a child and when I was only 8 years old and I got my first telescope, boom! I had my first floater in my right eye...at 9 years old, I already experienced panic attacks and seeing the school nurse. 30 years since my first floater, it is a sea of dark, translucent and lines. 20 years ago, in college, I had many panic attacks from the white walls and floaters. I had to start a mild tranquilizer and deep breathing. That's another story. Occasionally I will have flashes after a stressful day, but one word of advice I have is...do not strain neck muscles and use hot cold packs around eyes and ears to stimulate healthy lubrication of the inner ears and surface of eyes. As far as retinal health, it is still fully attached. Both sides of my family have eye conditions ranging from nystagmus to myopia and floaters to macula degeneration.

Thanks for this! I remember seeing my first floater when I was in elementary school, and now that I'm 47, I have a huge number of them. I can usually ignore them, but they're so annoying on sunny days that I prefer to go hiking on cloudy days. I'm worried someday they are going to interfere with my driving. They're this constant reminder that--as much as I try to be positive about aging--I'm actually just falling apart :)

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this. They actually did a study and found that people who have floaters have higher perceived stress levels and depression, so you are absolutely not alone in feeling this way. They can be so debilitating. If they're affecting you, you may want to seek an opinion regarding surgery (I'll have 2 upcoming videos where I actually interview experts about YAG vitreolysis and vitrectomy surgery)

@@DrRupaWong That's so interesting! I'm glad someone is researching this, especially since more people are near-sighted these days--which might mean more people eventually developing problem floaters? It probably does contribute to my chronic high stress. I'm looking forward to your upcoming videos--I'm on the fence whether I want to do any treatments, but I'm hopeful I'll find one I feel comfortable with, if not right now, after a few more years of progress. Hi doc *to share* . . . I had more so mild floaters & was constantly using eyedrops-moisturizing good kind like Systane but was never getting relief, even with the ointment. Finally I was told I would have to buck up the extra cash and start using preservative free and see if my eye moisture content plus floaters got better. Wellllll they did within 4 days on switching. It appears I was not receptive to preservatives used in eye drops and WHAT a difference using preservative free. At least in Canada it seems we pay more for this formulation and the MEAN companies rarely give samples of pres. free formulation to our surgeon-specialists of eyes.

Unfortunately for me, they multiplied spectacularly after the last covid infection, I am now 31 years old, but I discovered the first one when I was 5 years old. I'm not highly myopic, but I have pretty spectacular astigmatism, but I don't wear glasses because I can still see comfortably up to the monitor distance. At the age of 20, I saw quite a lot of them when the weather was like that or when it snowed a lot. I had occasional faint flashes of light in my eyes, but not the kind they keep showing on the internet, so not in the periphery, and they didn't look like lightning. So I never thought I might have PVD, but it seems like my cough for weeks hastened the process. But now it really seems that I have PVD developing, because a few months ago I could only see the floaters clearly, recently it is common for them to become blurred, but at the same time they have taken over the entire field of vision, so they are no longer just at the bottom or center of my periphery, but everywhere and very freely. In other words, it is certain that the inside of my eyes is no longer a jelly substance. What I have noticed is that if I can see them clearly and try to focus with my eyes close to or further away than the monitor, they get blurred after a while. In other words, the tension and relaxation of the lens seems to affect the position of the floaters. The worst is when I look at the keyboard for a moment and then suddenly back at the monitor, they can get very sharp. Also, if I lie on my back for minutes or wake up like that, which is the worst, I can see them very clearly for hours, but if I start doing something with my head down for hours, then the situation seems to improve. Someone told me that if there was a hemorrhage, I wouldn't experience this, but many small dots, a lot, as if pepper was poured into my eyes and it would be absorbed after a while, but floaters don't do that, they just settle to the bottom of the eye.

I got floaters several years ago, and I am 64 years old Inow, I hae gotten used to them but sometimes I do get in the light or somehow I can see them, but for the most part I can't see them at all. I also had one that TORE so I had to go get surgery but it was minor. it was super easy they just sowed it up and it was easy within minutes. But I heard that they could go away I would LOVE that but I wonder if its because I had dry eyes for like 10 years that brought them on.? I heard that they can go behind the eye too and hide and that would be fine as well, ha when it first happened I FREAKED OUT because I had them in one eye and it was SO BAD THE LINES all over and it was so creepy and I didn't know what was going on at all lol, The doctor told me if I get a BRIGHT LIGHT happen that could mean that I got a tear in the other eye and it HAPPENED ! i was NEAR SIGHTED m whole life but then the last couple of years my eye doctor said that I was also FAR SIGHED too? and last year My eyes actually got BETTER from 900 to 800 WHICH IS CRAZY but she told me that might happen but my twin sister her eyes have gotten worse? But I do know that my great aunt ended up becoming BLIND but her heart was so STRONG that she wouldn't die until 90 years OLD ha so if i DON'T WANT to go blind I would rather DIE instead ! Maybe because I wore contacts until I got the dry eyes around 50 years old I had to go to GLASSES and I HATED them, now I am used to them and they HIDE my dark eye circles

I almost had a retina detachment from the trauma i had in rigth eye , luckily i didnt need surgery, i recovered doing a 1month of fully resting (couldnt jump, run, do any physycal intense activity, not even lifting 20kgs they told me). How do i know if the floaters i have now were cause by the trauma or by MYOPIC i currently have ? My rigth eye was bloody and couldnt look with it for 1 week (probably more i dont remember). The floaters dont really bother me, i only notice them if i think about it.

hello doc, i'm 30 yrs old from india, 2 months ago i was infected by HSV-1 stromal keratitis on the right eye so i had to visit nearby ophthalmologist, the treatment was aciclovir as anti-viral, prednisolone as steroid and lubrex for a month, when i went for the final checkup the stroma was healed and left a scar above the pupil axis but the sclera redness didn't decrease so they gave me another lubricant called XLHA(sodium hyaluronate with coenzyme q10) when i used it the first day there was a slight irritation so i skipped a day and started using it 4 times a day for a month still the redness didn't decrease, during the first week of XLHA another stromal scar was formed right side of the pupil axis and i started seeing light scattering like halos around all light sources like wall lights, monitor screens and even the moon, the weird part is i'm seeing floaters only on scattered light halos. i hope i can talk to you about this as you're a corneal specialist. thank you.

Hi Doctor, thank you for the video and information. I had double monofocal lens replacement in June ... recovery was going to plan and then around August I noticed my right eye was no longer as sharp and it was like a translucent blob kept appearing momentarily in my line of sight as I looked left then right. At my next follow up appointment, the Optometrist said I had a PVD but said the rest of my eye was fine. Since then it's been quite irritating as my left eye is now perfect and settled, but I cannot enjoy my new distance vision because the floaters consistently make me feel like both eyes are not balanced. Although I have not experienced any of the danger signals you mention, I also feel a moderate discomfort in my eye with the floater and the eye seems to water more than the other also affecting vision, Is that nornal ? thanks in advance for any feedback.

But ma'am still, please give me your opinion also. Should I keep my eye in this same condition? Please recommend it to me, ma'am. Thanks..!

Hello, doctor. I am from Hong Kong. I have been experiencing floaters in my eyes since I was in primary school. When I was around 20 years old, I had laser eye surgery to correct my nearsightedness. My vision has been stable since I was 15-16 years old, and I haven't experienced any worsening of my vision. I am now in my 30s, and my vision is still good, without any nearsightedness. However, my floaters have persisted and seem to have increased in number and length compared to when I was younger. I have seen eye doctors, and they have assured me that it is benign and hasn't affected my retina. But I am still very worried. Is it unusual to have floaters since primary school?
