I don’t normally comment on videos. My mum came to me and cried to me about this condition she was told she had about 9 months ago. And I firstly couldn’t believe how little help she has received. We talk about mental health and things we can’t see but these things like PVD is impacting on mental health as this is effecting quality of life! Interstitial Cystitis and PVD very much come to mind. Proven medical conditions but like you say trying to restore a quality of life doesn’t seem to be a priority. My poor mum 60 years old and crying to me about not being able to see grandkids i’ve not had yet. I wish we all find an answer or I at least pray that we raise awareness, which leads to those in the future, getting help!!

Your description was spot on at the beginning. This just happened after I woke up a few days ago. Walking around in the dark and see some flashes of light. What the heck? I am closing in on 60. I am going to see the eye doc to make sure I have no retinal issues. I feel better now that I know this is not unusual.

Suddenly had lightning flashes in far right periphery last night while watching tv in a darkened room. Thought my daughter was flashing a flashlight or laser pointer at the wall beside me. When I closed my eyes, it continued as my eyes moved. Today, on the way to a work-in appointment with the retina doc, I had what felt like was a huge black jagged horsehair occupy a 1/3 of my field of view in the same eye, and would move and pulsate in and out as my eyes moved. Confirmed PVD after exam, with no retinal tear...a huge relief. Found this video after. Follow-up in a few weeks. Just turned 58.

Excellent video. Couldn’t have explained it better. You would be a great instructor if you were to teach. So easy to follow and understand! My mom went to the doctors last night because she saw an optometrist 2 days ago due to randomly seeing floaters. They did an exam and he said they were just floaters but to see a doctors if it got worse or if she experienced flashes. Well yesterday she did experience flashes so we went to the eye doctor and they examined her a little more and found what it seemed to be PVD. (She’s 61). The doctor wanted to make sure that’s what it was so she has another appointment today with an ophthalmologist but we were worried because it sounds so similar to retina detachment but after watching this video, we feel much better! Over 1yr ago this happened to me. The flashes cleared but it started again. I see semi-circle flashes when looking up, down and side to side in the dark. It has been very worrisome. This information is so valuable and helpful. I can rest easier until I get back in to see my eye dr. Thanks

i turned 58 last month. 4 days ago, while talking to a co-worker, i noticed flases of light from my right eye, against the white wall. 2 days after, i notice thin tiny floaters. a day after, i had a pain near the eye, so i went to the doctor. I am sure to come back when the floaters get darker or after 8 weeks for another check-up. This video explains - the why - and i am thankfuL for explaining to us. I do sure wish for my vitreous to stay inside the sac and sac not detach.

I am so relieved to know this information. I have the bigger darker floater in my right eye. The flashing of light seems to be reducing in frequency. Left eye flashes seem extremely diminished and never seemed to have had floaters. Thank You so very much for this info!

For a whole year i have been wondering what is wrong with my vision! Been told many times my retina looks healthy but I have these weird flashing lights in my peripheral vision. I have been going through this for 2 years now whith my left eye then in may of this year my right eye started flashing so I went to my doc asap and said I have no tears but both are still attached I see him every 3 months and he said if I see any wavy lines call him right away.. PVD is seen in about 25% of 60 year olds, and go up with age. It is possible to have very bothersome floaters without a PVD though.

Now Dallas / Forth Worth area residents are the lucky recipients to have Dr. Johnson services nearby. Thank you for this video! It is by far the best on the subject of PVD floaters that I have found. Actually it is on the only one that makes any sense. I was diagnosed with "vitreous floaters" about 5 years ago (age 59) and the ophthalmologist said was that there was nothing that they can do for me. He gave me a generic "floater fact sheet" and said make an appointment for the next year. He did not explain anything, other than say that it was 'normal' and I was not going blind. However, it was and is frustrating as all hell seeing specks, flashes and veils. From your description I obviously experienced PVD. Thanks again for that. I will review your web page and see about your procedures and fees. Getting rid of this crap floating around in my eyes would be great. Maybe as good as LASIK was.

I have been going to a retina specialist for the past two months, I began perceiving floaters and became annoyed and I went in to the retina specialist as it was so bothersome. Come to find out I have lattice degeneration and about a dozen holes in my peripheral retina on both eyes. He recommended we laser around the holes to basically weld down the retina to prevent detachment. I have gone for three laser treatments so far and have about 3 to go , just had one done this past Monday actually . The day of and day after there is some aching sensation and then some days later it begins itching. I am only 30 years old and my floaters have had me debating getting a vitrectomy just for floaters. My floaters are a combination of vitreous syneresis and fibers from the many holes in my retina, luckily my macula is fine and I don’t have any vision changes aside from bothersome floaters.

Mine floaters are not stringy. They are little specks. Every so often I’ll swat at what I see thinking that they are nats flying around. Lol. I had cataract surgery last month and there a lot of them and getting those flashes of light that in every had before. I see my doctor in 4 days. I will make him aware of this for sure. I had a very abrupt hemorrhagic PVD 8 days ago. Age and increased nearsightedness, plus family history of spontaneous retinal detachment (brother), are my only risk factors. The right eye is now starting the same shenanigans. Nobody’s diagnosed the type of floater that abruptly appeared 3 days after onset of flashes. It’s big, roundish, dark and right in the effing middle of my central line of vision. There’s a lot of shadowy patches, warping everything I see. One Dr said, “you’ll get used to it.” Haha. Apparently he’s hasn’t had this condition. Thank you for your compassion and for taking this seriously. Yes, I can see, but my sanity is important. I can only imagine what people in the dark ages went through because it’s driving me crazy. Ive been scared and depressed, so thank you for helping alleviate some of my worry, Question: How often do both eyes do this within a week or so?

Thank you for this amazing explanation. You explained it very clearly - more clearly than my eye doctors. What's frustrating about PVD is that seniors or people in their late 40s or early 50s are used as the example of what is to follow, and how things are likely to progress in this age range when you get a PVD. I just turned 37, and was diagnosed with PVD and Weiss ring this past weekend. However, no doctor could clearly state how things are going to turn out a month from now or more cause I'm so young. I was told to call the floater a name and make friends with it. I wish there was more information for people in my age range. Just to know if this Weiss ring is going to disappear or not.

I had this happen today at work. It's like looking at the world through a shifting curtain of tiny specks with a large floater that comes in and out of view. Helpful. Came home and thought I had a bug in my eye. Washed the eye, no bug. Next morning, flahes on the right side. Go to the doctor, he does the exam and says I have healthy eyes. Meanwhile I have to live with feeling like a bug is constantly flying in front of my eyeball and hair. It's depressing. But at least now, thanks to this vid, I have an idea of what is going on. Chinese medicine connects eyes to the liver. I might go seek eastern med practitioner and get some herbs.

Oh the Chinese LOVE LOVE LOVE the liver, but a vitreous detachment (flashes) is a mechanical separation of the vitreous cortex from the retina. No amount of liver detox is going to coax it to reattach.

I get the arc flash to the very far side of my eye for a fraction of a second, but only when I do a rapid eye movement. And I do notice a few more floaters. Started last night. Bit better today. Already saw optometrist. and scheduled appointment with retinal specialist. but still worried and can't stop thinking about the issue. But optometrist today noted signs of inflammation and want me to see the retinal specialist to rule out Retinal Branch Artery Occlusion.

I'm just now trying to catch up to some of these KZbin comments and it is an overwhelming prospect. Sometimes. This response is not very timely, but I'm sure by now you've had an eye examination and probably have been quite reassured that you don't have something as severe as a retinal vein or artery occlusion. More likely what you were experiencing is a posterior vitreous detachment. These are very common and as that membrane is peeling away from the retina, that internal traction causes that brief ark or flash of light. By now, a month later, most or all of the flashes have probably subsided. I hope all in all it was nothing serious.

@The Floater Doctor (Vitreous Floater Solutions Inc.) I hope you see this comment, because around here no one gives a good explanation to PVD...it's a shame that I'm nearly 8000km away. I'm 28, I've had a couple floaters for a long time in the left eye, never cared about them. One day I was driving at night and suddenly I saw a shadow moving when I moved the eyes. The next day I saw a large amount of floaters..I scheduled an appointment and got the eye checked. I was told that I had PVD and that there was a small tear in the periphery of the retina. I got the laser done and came back 3 months later to check if everything was fine and fortunately, it was. When I came back to check if the laser was sufficient the doctor told me that yes, the laser was fine, but the PVD wasn't yet complete. To put a time line on this, I first had the floaters in November 2021, I had my first appointment that same month and went two weeks later to check if there was any change. Since there wasn't, I had the laser done in early December. I got it checked in March. I don't know if I'm obsessing or not, but I think I have more floaters now than in November...so I went and saw another doctor just for peace of mind...He said the same thing, I have PVD and retina is fine. From what I see in the web, I have every type of floater possible..small round ones, with a lot of detail, strands that look like worms, and clumps. These clumps I have 2, they are barely visible if I don't squint my eyes..I see them and large translucent masses that are not in focus like the other ones. When they move in front of text, for example, they sort of distort the image slightly. Can this be a Weiss ring? It seams heavier that the other ones because they move faster.. What makes me worry the most is the fear that they just keep growing until I can't see from that eye... Sorry for the long text :)

This is an interesting story. A true PVD is quite unusual in some of your young age. My guess is that you might be nearsighted as a baseline and that might be a risk factor. It is further complicated by a small retinal tear which could introduce red blood cells and retina pigment cells into that space. That might explain a lot of the very small dots that you're experiencing. The membrane that peels away from the red to know is less defined but can affect the quality of vision and also significantly decrease your contrast sensitivity. You might have a wise ring, but you might also just have some diffuse junk and cloudy floaters. As you will find out. Out if you haven't already, your doctors will consider success the preventing any further retina detachment. And by the way, that is an important success. But they probably lose interest quite a bit when you keep bringing it up. The eye floaters situation. Do You remember the last time you were dilated by your doctor? Did you notice if the dilation diminished or decreased your awareness of the floaters.? If so, you might consider twisting their arm a little bit and convincing them to prescribe for you. The low dose atropine. It's very safe to use and I get some great reviews for my patients using the lotus atropine.

Many thanks, a few days ago I got left eye extreme left flash like a vertically oriented white bar. I also got the big semi-attached floater that moves with the water in my eye as if there is a mechanical dampening of the floater's movement. It basically stays to the left of my left eye centre of vision but moves less than the water by a few degrees when there is horizontal movement of eye, then settles into position in a second or two when the eye is again stationary. There are other minor floaters apparent near the main one. The main floater, which is attached as you have drawn it, looks like a little spider hanging about an inch in front of my eye, and many times I have jumped and tried to brush it away. In relatively bright light the spidery look is more apparent, with a shadowy body and legs hanging down below it. The damped motion adds to the impresion that it is a small spider hanging by a thread just in front of my eye. I am in London, England, and so won't bother you with questions; you have answered them all with this absolutely spot-on video. Many thanks again, you are my hero of the day. I am 64, and both myself and my son were worried about retinal detatchment in my left eye. I will get this checked anyway, but, yes, again, thank you so much for this fine video.

Get a vitrectomy. The procedure is now very safe. If the floaters are severe this is the way to go. It is out patient and recovery takes about 2 weeks. Your vision will be crystal clear. You will need cataract surgery within a year but that is a routine procedure. If your insurance does not cover vitrectomy out of pocket will be, on average, around 6K. Dr. Johnson is an excellent laser surgeon but more floaters will develop over time and you will want to be rid of this deterioration for once and for all.

For some people that is a reasonable choice and I will recommend it occasionally. But it is not a simple matter of walking in to the clinic and requesting it. Imagine from the doctor's (retinologist's) perpsective" - Your waiting room is full of old people with retina's in various stages of decrepitude: macular degeneration, holes/tears, diabetic retinopathy, membranes, etc. - Along comes 25 year old Trevor with perfectly clear optics, a shiny retina, and the eye still has that 'new car smell', but complaining of these horrible floaters. -Despite your examination, imaging, and scans, you may not really be able to see or document the actual floaters, and the patient has 20/15 vision and all other aspects of the exam are perfect. -You have a well-written informed consent document, but in the US, anyone can still bring a lawsuit against a doctor and a vitrectomy is still an invasive procedure that even if perfectly performed could a) not get all the floaters and possibly cause new floaters in the residual and remaining vitreous, b) cause an infection, c) cause a retina hole/tear/detachment, d) cause chronic macular edema, e) permanent visual disability. -The doctor has a waiting room full of risk, but the decision making is somewhat clearer and well-established. That person with a retina detachment? You've got to do 'something' and even if the outcome is poor, your decision to do something is justifiable.. That is rarely the case with younger-people's floaters and a vitrectomy. hat doctor will be putting their medico-legal neck 'on the chopping block' should anything go wrong. So even though I do refer to the vitrectomy as the 'gold-standard' and more definitive procedure, that comes with risk most of my patients, and a lot of retina specialists will not accept.

Had the flashers and floaters so I got checked out. After dilation and thorough blinding light search he says it's fine. Relieved but wary I should have laid around for a few days but instead went for an easy bike ride in the park. After an hour or so a black smoke appeared in the middle of the one bad eye. I panicked and went home and have been taking it easy today. The smoke was different than the floaters. Today there's only the floater. The Doctor pretty much said not to call unless I have a loss of vision. Thanks for the great video. I'm thinking it's PVD tugging on the retina and if I can be careful I might avoid the surgery. The floaters are ok but the smoke is terrifying. Like watching film burn in the projector if you remember those days.

Thanks for the discussion of this. I recall my first experience seeing a flash of light in the periphery of my left eye as I was walking down a dark hallway. My first thought was that I hadn't seen anything in the forecast about a thunderstorm, but it wouldn't be the first time a surprise isolated thunderstorm developed. I pulled up the radar and nothing. Huh. A few steps back into the dark hallway and it happened again! Was I losing my mind? I went out on the porch and stared at the north sky, waiting to see lightening to confirm my sanity, but nothing - ugh! Now it seems comical that I wasn't connecting this experience with anything going on in my eye, but in my mind and imagined horrible things like a brain tumor or something. What a relief to learn this is fairly common and generally innocuous.

@@lion9308 so today I went to the eye Drs. Had to wait a few days because I was sick, strange to say I was happy it was only the flu I did get tested for COVID and that was negative. So the left eye has caught up and it’s not as bad as the right one. The right one had a wrinkle in it that has smoothed out and is not as bad now. What a pain this has been but could be worse.

Very interesting video. I had a horseshoe tear and vitrectomy in right eye last year and PVD in left eye five months ago still with ongoing but fainter flashes of light on the periphery. Been examined numerous times over the last year plus recent cataract surgery. No one else has explained the nature of the vitreous or PVD as succinctly as you have. The Weis ring and other floaters from the PVD in the left eye are annoying but I am in Australia and unlikely to visit the USA in the near future which is a shame.

I had pretty glitter vision one eye last night 10 minutes. then after that my large black jellyfish hydra friend joined me and today that went right into my center vision while driving - what a nuisance!

Thank you, I just had my eyes checked and changed my glasses about two months ago. My eyes were fine. You explained it well, however if it continues or gets worst in a short time, I will go back to my eye doctor.

I recently had cataract surgery and then a few weeks later was diagnosed with vitreous detachment. Both eyes had the mild flashes. Because I had dropless surgery I was left with a curtain of floaters that lasted 2 or 3 days and disappeared. I still have leftover floaters from before surgery. I am wondering if I could have had the detachment before cataract surgery or after. I had some floaters before surgery but not the "shimmering light" as I call it. I have to tell you that your video is exceptional.

Just had left cataract removed and PVD appears to have started again, I thought it had finished a couple of years ago! Anxiety pretty high

thank you for this explanation, I just started with this last night, flashes from the outer right eye with a floater blob filled with dark spots, I checked my eye just now and it is bloodshot top and bottom, I did just have quite a binge of internet time during the covid lockdown so thought this may have contributed to this experience, it is reassuring to land here after thinking that I could have been experiencing a stroke or brain haemorage, should I need to live with the floater forever? I'm sure that eventually 'God willing' i'd adjust and surrender to yet another stage of the aging process, i am so thankful that my eyes have served me so blessedly good over these years in which many strange symptoms from time to time have surfaced and experienced and oft times 'thank God' cured, its the positive way that we need to look at it, I do believe that for every illness there is a cure, as we set out to find it, which brought us all here, what a great starting point!, thank you, all the best to you

A four year old video that has brought me down from the edge of a panic attack. I had peripheral lightning flashes last night in my left eye, and this afternoon a big ring-shaped floater showed up just left of my center vision. I went to the ER where they did an ultrasound and said I have a hemorrhage? My vision is normal aside from some mild flashes still. I have an appointment with an ophthalmologist at Dartmouth first thing Monday morning. (The two hour drive is going to be the worst part.) I really hope that what I have is what you've described.

I went to Dartmouth Medical School!! what a beautiful part of the country. Hemorrhage can take about 4 months to clear. Be patient. Rule out any retina involvement. Good luck.

@@Thefloaterdoctor1 Thank you, Doctor! I didn't have any hemorrhage, thankfully, that was just the ER doc not knowing what she was looking at on the ultrasound. I have a follow up appt in 3 weeks with my regular ophthalmologist. My Weiss ring is a huge annoyance so I may look into zapping it if it doesn't calm down in the future.

Nice presentation. I am part of the floater crowd now. Just had a PVD last month complete with micro vessel burst in left eye. It was like looking through a red lava lamp for a few days. It’s clearing up slowly but still have the Weiss ring floaters. If they don’t clear out in next few months I may be paying you a visit.

Doc, You really bring the subject to life. I needed some peace of mind on this unpredictable and changeable subject. Go Texas! . . . Would love a note on migraine with aura which always comes with my flashes which have been coming about once a month for about 20 years (now 80 years old). Also the flashes/migraine start with a "vision loss" in the middle of my vision. Is there anything I can do or know about this?? 💖

If you look at my other videos, I have many, many videos on this topic. My practice for the last 15 years has been using a young laser to treat eye floaters. I have now added telemedicine video consultations with the intent of providing some relief for the younger floater sufferers who are typically not good candidates for the yag laser. You can look into my practices offering of low dose atropine eye drops which very mildly dilates the pupil and who usually decrease or diminish the person's awareness of their eye floaters

​@@sophiexo1685 This sounds pretty familiar to me... It's happened to me a few times. I tried with other doctors - and I had a better understanding, most doctors (however) talk little about this diagnosis. (PVD) In ​​general - medicine only observes with this diagnosis - until some serious problem with the retina or something else appears. All of us - that's why we're here. We want to understand something - about which they (doctors) should be clairvoyant :) But they are not. We have one useful move - regular reviews. And if a retinal tear occurs - there are two ways: Laser or a risky but inevitable operation.

I developed a posterior vitreous detachment in left eye 3 weeks ago. First sign? A big floater suddenly appeared in that eye, just off center. Never had one before. Later that Eve got flashing lights in left side of that eye. Next day more floaters in peripheral side of eye. The flashers diminished later that weekend. Still have the big floater. Vision not S good, maybe because of floater. Going back to retina specialist 1 month since last visit. I wonder if my long-term dry eye prob contributed. I'm 62. I'm working on the dry eye prob though.

It is very unlikely dry eye contributed to the problem. The culprit is birthdays...too many of them. Twenty-five percent of 60 yr olds have PVDs

Likely the single best description of this that I have found - THANK YOU for posting this. The "Weiss Ring" (11:20...) appears to be exactly what happened to me on Dec 25, 2020. I just turned 50 in May & have a fairly myopic prescription (-7.00 in each eye), so clearly I'm in the higher probability/risk category. My optometrist said (after this happened) my "eye health" is otherwise excellent, though this floater is not something I would like to "get used to living with". Question: Are you aware of anyone in Canada with a similar, specialized & reputable treatment-practice for this exact issue? Thanks again for making this video!

Great video doctor. I only see lights flickering when i go from a dark room to light. Is that the same as flashes of light? I thought it was the light but it’s me. I’m going this week to the eye doctor.

If flashes are due to a PVD, they would best and be repeatedly seen in a dark environment.

Wow! What a great explanation! You really explained it very well (and I might say a little amusingly). I will still rush out tomorrow to my eye doc to see what gives with the flashes on the periphery of my 63 year old near sighted left eye. But I feel reassured. BTW, I thought this was a migraine at first, as I have optical migraines, but it clearly isn't - the flashes do not 'shape' or grow into a diamond-like arc blocking my field of vision (as in my migraines.) Plus, not hell headache. Could you do a piece on migraines? They scared the ---- out of me when they first started, when I was about 29 or so.
