I’m going to tell you EVERYTHING!!!
These are the tips you won’t find anywhere else
This week’s video is my ultimate guide to using retinoids. This was partly driven by my horror that one of my team still didn’t feel confident enough to start a retinoid despite being immersed in skincare for months. This filled me with shame! So given that last week’s How To… video seemed to really help, I thought I’d give retinoids the same treatment. Is there such a thing as too much detail? I hope not. So if you’ve been putting off starting a retinoid (and I know many of you have) then this is for you!
As always thank you so much for watching and for all your support!

Hello! I started tretinoin 0.025% exactly six weeks ago, on my face and neck. On my neck I apply it over Cerave moisturizing cream, and every 10 nights. It's purging, but not too badly. I thought about applying it every week after the 6-week mark, but I think I'll keep doing what I'm doing. Slowly but surely. I hope this helps! 💖
@catarinaf3261
@catarinaf3261 3 жыл бұрын
2 to 3 times a week, I've been buffering my neck skin (insisting on the horizontal neck lines) and mixing my Tretinoin 0.05% with a basic, neutral, rich moisturizer (been using The Ordinary's NMF). I mix it on the back of my hand: 1 pea size amount of Tret + 1 pea size amount of moisturizer. This gives you a more gentle retinization, as Tret is absorbed more slowly by the skin. After using it on my face, I apply whatever is left on my fingertips to my neck. I started just below the jawline every other day and have now been applying to my neck sides and will slowly move towards the central area (only 2 to 3 times a week on the neck for now). I do my PM routine around 1.5 - 2 hours before going to bed to prevent Tret transfer. So far, so good 🙏 PS - By the way, I always leave a little bit of the Tret+moisturizer mix on the back of my hand and then rub it against the other one. Hands also need some love 😉😘

Applied it again 3 days later and my face feels very itchy and irritated, especially around the eye area. I will be trying to buffering technique! Would you recommend stopping the use of salicylic acid while my skin is getting used to the retinol? I never use it in the same routine as the retinol, but I was using paula’s choice BHA 2% every day prior to starting retinol
@PsychicKathleen
@PsychicKathleen Жыл бұрын
Thank you Dr Sam! I'm 68 and have been using retinols for years. BUT rather shyly :) I used the 1% (IOPE Korean, Granactive by the Ordinary, Paula's Choice 1%) and not every night. My skin looked fabulous. Some days amazing. So like so many others I slipped into that dreamlike state of, more must be even better! I bought some very $$$ retinoids - high strengths - and went full on every night and used far more than a pea. Maybe 3 peas 🤣 Proudly thumping my chest with how I'm such an experienced retinoid user, I'll be a champ. How UNCHAMPION I was after about 2 weeks. omg. I've never had problems with my skin. I always thought I had the toughest skin because it never got irritated, dry, rashy. I never had acne. I hate the sun (always have because I can't stand the heat and the brightness has always stung my eyes so that means I never sit out in it and I ALWAYS wear hats sunglasses and sunscreen). But the irritation that erupted after this retinoid glut was terrifying. Red, tight, scaly, itchy, dry. I immediately stopped all retinoids! I started slathering on heavy moisturizers, cleansing only with oil cleanser, mineral sunscreen. I went full on. I had even set my neck on fire by bringing it down into one side of my neck. It's now been about 3 weeks and my skin remains sort of blotchy mostly after cleansing. Once it settles my skin looks beautiful lol Luminous, almost translucent which I know is the result of all that retinol. But WOW has this ever made me sit up and pay attention to this powerhouse of a active. Watching your videos have SO helped me to be encouraged and I will return to using retinol for sure but RESPECT is the operative word from now on. Very circumspect with amounts, moisturizing and not every night. Maybe twice a week but at first I'll start with my milder ones and give it a few days to see how it responds. I don't know how long before my skin barrier is fully repaired. Maybe another 2 weeks? However long. It's getting better but slowly.

Non dermatologist opinion here with no scientific evidence 🤣 but my thought is that, in general, retinol is retinol (varying of course by % in the product). And retinol is both good for acne, fine lines and pigmentation. I imagine that it's the delivery system that is geared more toward acne or anti aging 🤔

Really helpful Dr Sam. As someone with esp sensitive skin I started using Nightly Serum every 7 days for over a month and then every 3-4 days. The mistake I then made was to increase the amount rather than the frequency and recently had very sensitised skin. It put me off using and I haven't used the Nightly since! This has inspired me to try again. One thing I am not sure about though is how to sleep properly so the serum doesn't end up moving on the face. Don't laugh, but I actually try and sleep on my back for most of the night to avoid any serum moving onto parts of my face I don't want. Consequently I don't always sleep very well! At what point in the sleeping cycle is it safe to sleep on your side without fear of serum movement? The other thing I think you could have mentioned is protecting lips further by using your lip balm or even vaseline over the lips to act as strong barriers to the serum accidentally migrating? Many thanks for this video :)

Could you go more into the difference between trazarotene and tretinoin. I have been prescribed both, I have acne but am also approaching 40. Both have a good impact on my skin, but I think the trazarotene is sometimes better with helping acne but is tretinoin better for wrinkles? Thank you for the helpful info. If using the “sandwich” method & nightly serums such as peptides, would that be applied after the first moisturizing layer and before tretinoin?

It's amazing, as well as indicative, to which extent dermatological recommendations differ in terms of European ones and the American. Not saying this because I am from Europe, but given the research I delved into, both with my dermatologist and by watching numerous KZbin presentations and "connecting the dots". ALWAYS follow recommendations from European ones. They are, to cut the long story short, healthier and taking health much more into consideration than the Americans'. Thank you dr Sam for bearing in mind all of our health issues, our fears and insecurities.

Life is always beautiful when you have good health, for almost 4 years I was diagnosed with HPV, and I was lonely and sad, luckily for me I was addressed to a kind and great herbal doctor who helped me to restore my health back to me, he sent me the herbs that cured my HPV, completely and the test results proves I'm now negative of the virus , all thanks to you Dr.Ani John for the cure remedy for restoring my health, I will always be grateful to you for your kind gestures..

Thank you dr Sam! I love you channel! I have dry and extremely allergic skin, and I’m using retinal for 2 years and about to graduate to tretinoin. Every moisturizer I have ever tried applying on my upper lid made the skin there to swell up and react. (even plain Vaseline). Do you have a tip for me how to protect the eye area?

I use tretinoin everywhere, face, eyes, lips and neck (due to hormonal breakouts that extend down the neck). It's been a bit of a struggle but it's definitely doable if you start slow and build up. You can use it everywhere eventually.

Can I use copper and other peptides with retinoids? I read conflicting things on the internet, one person says we can use these ingredients together, the other one says the opposite. I would also like to know if we can combine copper peptides with azelaic acid. Thanks for the wonderful video!!! I love your channel

I started using retinol about 4 months ago, 0.25%. I use light moisturizer under, then retinol serum and moisturizer on top. Only small amount of retinol as shown on the video. I started with one night a week, and worked through to two as I wanted to take it slow. Unfortunately my skin is worse than ever! I don't experience dryness or redness but i started having HUGE and painful breakouts that leave hyperpigmentation. Also I noticed deep wrinkles showing up on my forehead which wasn't there before. All of it within 4 months. Did anyone else had the same experience? I thought the breakouts will stop, but they just keep getting worse and worse... I decided to stop retinol.

Lovely video thank you. So when your opinion retanoid retinoid, retin-a physically mixed together, For example stirred together in the Palm of your hand before application, dilutes the effectiveness activeness of the RetinA?

It would be amazing if we can get info on how to use azelaic acid. What % to start with and also how to apply it. Can it be used with retinoids. Do we use it AM or PM. Like you did with this video. I have rosacea and acne. Never had it before but got it during pregnancy and 18 months after delivery I still have issues. so it would be useful to know if that’s something for me. Thank you so much 😊

Dr Sam, my question is: when I do retinol every night, how (when) should I use glicolic acid or salicilic acid? I suppose, in the morning or before retinol in the evening? Or using retinol I don't need any acid to peel my skin? 🌸 Thank you for your videos. 🌸🌸🌸

You shouldn’t use both in the same sitting, so you’d need to use the acid in the morning.

Hi Sam, I have acne rosacea and just got prescribed 6-8 weeks of lymelysal. I also got the following routine: finecea 15 % during daytime and benzo peroxide wash at night followed by differin. I never asked what to do with the acne at my neck. Should I add both of the creams to the upper neck and jawline area? I get cysts mostly around the lower cheeks and middle to upper neck. I have raised bumps and breakouts all over my face including the t-zone. Occasionally there is a acne breakout also at the back at my neck under my hairline.
Please be kind🙏
