If I take a PCM out of a 1999saturn SL1 and put it in a 1999 Saturn SL1 do I need to program it to my Saturn SL1

The PCM holds the VIN of the vehicle along with any options that are enabled. The programming for these years would be just to copy that data over to the replacement PCM. Note that there are _different_ PCMs used for automatic and manual transmission models even for the same year and model Saturn.

Really enjoyed this video. I have owed a 1998 Saturn SW1(Automatic) Since 2011. Love this car. It has a digital OD with 428,000 miles. Does the PCM store the mileage? If so, if I get another PCM does mileage have to be entered manually? And can PCM’s be restored?

I'm not aware of anyone repairing/restoring these old school Saturn PCMs. But you can reprogram them using a GM Tech2 tool, a TIS2000 DVD, and with this special red adapter I covered in the video. Some older shops would be the only ones that may still have the necessary equipment.

I'm not sure on that model, most likely in the instrument panel cluster. I don't believe those late 90s Saturns had a body control module (BCM). Mileage isn't typically stored in the PCM, just the VIN. It's usually stored in either the BCM or IPC (and in more modern models both).

Would this allow you to reprogram an Automatic PCM with the Manual PCM calibration? I swapped my 99 to a manual transmission and I’ve been wondering what the right solution would be. I have a Tech 2 and the red Saturn adapter, just missing TIS2000.

This adapter was required with SPS for any Saturn specific PCM across the model years in the video title. As for converting between manual and automatic, I doubt it as there are likely pinout differences given two different GM PCM part numbers for the two powertrains.

Windows 2000 ?! Where do you even find that anymore ?! I sure hope the shop can fix my Option Issues next week with this. It got a BCM problem, I believe.

Edit: Most shops don't even use these anymore, or don't know anything about the Tech 2.

Do you know if GM/Saab (1999 & up) uses different OBD2 connector end?

GM North American brands all use the same OBD2 connector since 1996. Also in use in 2023. The pinout has evolved, but the connector is a standard. I can't say for Saab, or any other EU brands like Opel though.

I’ve had a couple saturns in my time. 95 SL-2 5 speed car and an Ion (I think it was an 04) also a 5 speed car. Both good cars. I’d still have the Ion if it wasn’t destroyed in a crash a couple years back. That car was super reliable, easy to work on and parts were dirt cheap even OEM parts when available and gas mileage was outstanding

Trying to start installation of a 'Unichip' by dastek which is a piggyback computer for cars that don't have a lot of aftermarket support-you know saturn didn't I'm sure. Question: do you know of any other cars that had very similar, albeit not exact, harness connections for their pcms? Reason being, Dastek has hundreds of diagrams for various makes that detail what wires to intercept (how to intercept-cut and splice, 't' into, etc.) but naturally, not for the saturn. Having one that is close, might might help them to help me, would be fantastic. Sounds like you delve into a lot of pcms and perhaps you've seen one close to that particular setup. I specifically mean number of connectors, their number of pins per connector, etc.

This is the kind of info and experience you'd have to get from a shop that does nothing but PCM repairs I'd expect.

My new found friend. I have a 1998 Saturn SL2 that I really did not want, now after being stuck with it for 2 years, have completely rebuilt the motor, some extra specials.. 🔥 Transmission, almost completely rebuilt the entire car, and NOW having a performance issue, first the battery kept draining, had no battery/charging light, went through 3 alternators and 2 starters, found a problem with the ECU.. Seems the drain is within the ECU, and now, it's showing codes that do not exist. Map, O2, weird things, but when it's running, runs perfect, but after a half hour, starts missing, but intermittent. The Serve engine soon light does not light up, but my cheap scan tool will communicate to it.. I'm thinking it needs reprogramming? Do you do this and how much and where do I mail it off to? Please help, I love this car now.. 🙏🙏🙏
