The thing is without considering the genetics, no one is born with self hatred, negative self talk or mental illnesses. If someone keeps destroying how you perceive yourself verbally all the time, in time, it's easy to believe these words instead of what you knew was true. So it's all in her head but others were in the first place.

Mental illnesses do have a genetic base... Im adopted and had a great childhood... But Im still bipolar and im pretty sure my bio mom was bipolar and im pretty sure my daughter's bipolar... There are mental illnesses you can gain through trauma... But some of the really difficult one's that are life long you're definitely born with... There's no triggering event... They just seek up one you... But they do drop hints if you can spot them.. But having creeps spout a bunch of b.s. at you does not help either... Especially if you're already vulnerable...

The key to healing from personality disorder is to be aware of the self unconscious thought that we all have. Meditation was a amazing tool to become self aware of these negative thoughts that make us trigger and go through another circle of paranoia episode.

People with mental illness can often psychologically project when they feel stuck or are suffering in their mental health and having a crisis. I've seen this happen a lot. I had took my own advice in the comments after ruminating about issues for years. I have decided to finally get real help for my neurological disorder.

@@Sharon-sw7mr You are right, anyone can really. I'm just saying from the perspective of someone who is mentally ill when it becomes unmanagible you can often project or blame others for stuff uk. It can be hard to be totally accountable for your actions anr faults when you deal with any sort of thing really not just from a mental illness. Its human nature when stressed to outright dismiss something if it pertains negatively to you or you make the negative association uk. Everyone can find themselvez projecting but few will actually call out their own bs to try and learn not to default to that uk.

Often the mind and thoughts can be so convincing that it's an issue unique to myself and brings about even more shame and self condemnation because you feel like you're the cause of all life's problems. These videos and the cognitive behavioural therapy Dr Marks mentioned do help in recognising that it isn't normal and that these thoughts aren't always true. And I've learnt that often I catastrophize a situation. There's much work to do, but you're not alone. And neither am I. It's hard to be honest to your own self. But my therapist once told me that I should own not only my positive feelings but also my negative feelings. Now that I understand that owning my negativities is actually a positive thing, it helps a lot. There's no need to feel ashamed to acknowledge that we feel or think negatively sometimes. What matters is that how we would navigate the emotions and thoughts skillfully after first acknowledging them. To have both positive and negative emotions is to be a human. It's normal, it just means that we're human. That's what my thrapist told me.

@@chinookvalley It's not common for people to realize what kids pick up on... Life is buried in the fog. Oh man, I remember walking 3 whole blocks from home to the school play at like 8pm, and the teachers in charge asking where my Mom was; me telling them she was working... and then hearing them "whisper" to each other about how she's probably too drunk to show up... I learned A LOT about the difference between what is said to you, and what is said about you.

for me, idk if this counts as projection or not, but one defense mechanism I use is to search for people's "weaknesses" so that I can feel slightly better than them. of course I do this all in my head though. but it makes me feel like a really bad person, and definitely adds to the stress. I am highly neurotic: I have low self-esteem, social and general anxiety issues, plus perfectionism combined. life has been real hard with this mental condition. some days I just can't stop crying and beat myself so much. :(

I came here trying to find out why I project positive emotions on others. But perhaps it's not projection. I had two long term relationships with jealous men who projected their insecurities on me more as you describe, they automatically assumed I was flirting with others, that I was dissatisfied. I can see that. I've been insecure in my life, but actually that was not the biggest issue, It was more low self-worth when I should have expected better quality of suitors, or chosen from better quality of people. I always settled for mediocrity without waiting & looking for better suited people in terms of interests, integrity, exposure ... But what happens to me is that I (think) project love, connection, bonding onto the other person, I think they feel the same as I do. I plan and fantasize with doing beautiful things together, I like to give, to please, to think of the person and give them what they may need from affection to material things, I think they're better than what they are, I sublimate mediocrity. I think I began not to do that as much now that I'm older, I'm well into my 50s, but if I'm smitten with someone, I go back to idealizing them. I thought that was projection, projecting what I feel about life & others, but I guess that might not be called projection. So I don't know what it is, why I idealize and think others feel the same ... I come from trauma, from much trauma and seeing people suffer around me, I don't know why I "give"others deeper emotions about me that they have ... I'm not sure most men can love a real woman, I think most love an idea of woman, or of that woman, there, I guess they're projecting on them a set of expectations, then they're disappointed with the real woman .. I think people are better than they are, my naivitee is to the point of stupidity, then there's disappointment, but I've been able to love a few people despite their flaws, I thought that was growing up, but the truth is, I feel in love with the wrong people over and over again, never properly loved, ... so how do I find the middle term where of course, nobody is perfect, I should love someone beyond their flaws, but on the other hand, how not to project emotions, and see people for what they really are from the start ... I think I'm beginning to do it but it'd take decades for me to get conscious and good at detecting what I'm doing ...

@JustDr.S

I don't know what Dr. Tracy would say, but my situation is a lot like yours. I went for counseling. It became about asking myself the question: Not good enough for who? Whatever little I could do, to be the best version of myself, that's what I did. I couldn't do much, physically, due to my health, but I tried doing the best I could. I stopped telling myself I wasn't good enough, and all the other negative things you could imagine. I had to give myself a break, and NOT compare myself to anyone else who was fit and fabulous! Because I'd always be on the losing end of that, and it was not a fair comparison. I had to stop blaming myself. I had to stop blaming others. I had to learn to accept my limitations, and only be better at what I was able to. It took a long time. But, it helped me. I learned to try really hard to be better than 'good enough' for MYSELF. Nobody counts more than you do. Nobody's opinion of you should make you feel not good enough. Your opinion, is all that matters. Then work with the other stuff, like relationships. Was hard, but it can be done. No matter how small the steps you take are. You ARE good enough, you just don't know it, yet. Good luck, and good health to you. ❤❤❤

I feel like people don't really realize how much of what we say is indicative of the world inside of us. whenever you become negative or positive it's a direct reflection of how you feel inside. and more often than not this is how you felt even before getting "triggered". so let's stop blaming others for our actions. our environments do shape us but once you become aware enough of this environment, letting it shape you into doing or saying negative things is a decision and this decision hurts you and everyone around you.

You helped me to be able to see what a friend was doing to me . Recognizing that makes what she did feel less painful. You also helped me to recognize it in myself. Gave me something to think about . Do I project ? Lol . Maybe all humans do ? It’s a good thing to recognize. Imagine all the pain and turmoil we could bypass if we just knew what was happening.

I unfortunately experienced this with a man I cared about. He continuously told me that I’d ruined our relationship after his erratic behavior and impulses actually ruined it. I was actually trying to repair it. To know that he projected onto me because his emotions/thoughts felt unacceptable is nice to know but it is painful. Likewise I’d tell him I wasn’t his “type” because I was overweight and attractive but didn’t have great self esteem and he was very fit and attractive. ❤

This video is very helpful to me. Thanks again Dr. Tracey Marks! How about a video about fending off an attack in a healthy and mature way? I don't know how to do this. My mom has Narcisstic Personality Disorder and I've lived into middle age compulsively compliant. I'm becoming my own person later in life.

I'd love to hear more about projection such as "can someone work on this by themselves?" If a person keeps meeting the same toxic/narsasistic person over and over again in different relationships. How is that person a mirror of their own projections? Or am I confusing two different concepts??

I love that you talk about the nuances here. There is so much going on under the surface in our thoughts and core beleifs that we have to look at and work on gradually. A therapist can really help us see what's underlying that we may not be aware of, and help us work through it and track progress.

I'm a little confused, because I thought to project means assuming/interpreting someone else's words, actions, mental state etc. within one's own frame of reference. I never thought that has to be connected to negative internalized stuff. Example: "What do you mean, you don't want a bday party? _Everybody_ loves bday parties. You're gonna get one anyways, and I promise you're gonna love it!!" I'd argue this is a kind of projection without negative internalized stuff. As a person with autism, I often feel that people without autism project their abilities and enjoyments on me, not out of any negative internalization, but sometimes out of an intent to do me smth good (party, spontaneous visit) and almost always out of forgetting that I have limits that they don't have (spontaneous changes of plans, unpunctuality, well-meant advice "why don't you 'just' do " where will likely send me into a meltdown etc.). In turn, I project too, for example, when I see someone being sad, my instinct is to comfort them by leaving them alone - because loneliness, peace and quiet comforts me, when I'm upset. And I did act like that for a long time until I got social competence training that taught me that most people like a hug when they're sad. I always called these situations projection. Is there a different word for this?

Thank you for sharing! for me its money at the time, luckily I am changing career and will make allot more money. Now I can get my own luxury place and move on with my life. It is very positive to observe Your self. I have done allot of mindfullness so allot people say negatively just goes away like dust. About saying something negative to a partner, family member or friend can hurt thier self esteem. Some years ago when I was younger, my mother who did not work, and had a injury. I was working and getting in a little money with my father, I told her that all she do is just sitting home doing nothing. It may not be projecting, but it really got her on her own self esteem. So now I try being positive and encourage her to become a clothing designer, wich she has allways dreamt of. She has declined becouse she cant do it becouse of age, physical health etc. But for all I know, some spark can come and she will pursue her dream. Thank you for youre warmth. Sending good toughts :)
