How do you know if you're depressed? Sometimes it can be hard to tell if you have a clinical depression, or if you have a temporary sadness.
How do doctors diagnose depression? There are several depression symptoms that help you know if you're depressed. In this video I discuss the symptoms clinicians use to diagnose depression. I also discuss how depression can look differently from person to person.
I also discuss the difference between passive and active suicidality.
I upload every Wednesday at 9am, and sometimes have extra videos in between. Subscribe to my channel so you don't miss a video goo.gl/DFfT33

Sometimes I sleep too much and now a days I have been sleeping less and not being able to fall asleep and lack of appetite. I have also committed suicide twice but failed. I have really bad social anxiety. I start shaking in horrible situations. I feel less about myself. I feel bad sense of remorse and regret due to mistakes of the past that I can't get over. The more common one is I started to cut myself and I started drawing and writing more then I usually do and I have been staying in my room all day.

There is only one way to deal with depression . And its I also asked my self many times . Why the rich people and those who have any thing makes happy in this world are so depressed?? Are so lonely are so sarrow? Finally i get the answer. Answer is our soul their nature is that they want allah ,, you know body consists flesh and bone muscle and blood . But there is two parts of the body . And the physical we know what it needs . It needs exercise. It needs good Heart. it needs good food . It needs nutrition . It needs all these things to have good healthly body. But what does the soul need ? The soul needs god . And when that soul taken away from god . It doesn't remember god , it's never in agood environment it becomes depressed it becomes lonely,it yearns for god , it yearns for its creator we need these en environment. god says in the quran((But whosoever turns away from My Message, verily for him is a life narrowed down, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment.")) Quran 20:124 So the soul needs god and if it doesn't remember god it will die. Or depressed. Like if the body doesn't eat dies. Thanks alot

Um, does anyone else just not do their schoolwork because they’re sad? Like especially because of quarantine I’ve stopped doing work and it’s really hard to get myself motivated enough to to do work. Then I start feeling more depressed and get anxiety, but I feel so stupid because of how dumb it sounds when I try to explain it to myself. Sometime I feel motivated in the morning or at night, then I wake up and procrastinate. My parents get mad at me all the time and I’m not sure that they’ve noticed that I feel sad. They think I’m completely fine with my missing assignments, my mom even told me the other day “Why don’t you care that you’re failing?” Even though I cry about it almost everyday. This took a turn but tell me if you relate in someway...

This is a cycle. I'm not studying because I'm depressed and I'm depressed bcoz I'm not studying. I guess you may have heard it somewhere else also. In order to break this cycle you need to try and hang in there and keep doing your work anyway. This will be over (or atleast get better) when your quarantine ends and then you will thank yourself that you didn't give up and kept working. Remember, you want to make things better not worse.

The hard part about being depressed for a long time is that the questions doctors ask are always about recent changes. Have you been eating more or less than usual? Have you lost interest in things you used to enjoy? Has your sleeping patterns changed? etc If you've been depressed for a few years, you're can't really say yes to those, but you're still depressed

Good point. I had a psych prof (he was nationally known and did a psych eval on "Son of Sam" killer Berkowitz) and he told us that everyone suffers from neurosis, a light form of mental illness. It is when the neurosis deepens and becomes a psychosis that it becomes a problem. Of course he was oversimplifying psychology, but he was trying to put it in terms that us non-psych majors could understand and apply to our lives. Everyone has problems of some kind due to their heritage, up-bringing, environment. But he told us we don't have to be slaves to our problems and that recognizing them and trying to deal with them ourselves is not only possible, but required.

Zoomguitar what of the person with no family or friends? There is no “selfishness” there so one needs another argument to deter them. Shakespeare’s Hamlet pondered “to be or not to be...” so was he being selfish? How is self- destruction self-ish? It is the obliteration of self, the antithesis of selfishness because the soul and body are one, not two things.

English is not my first language, so I apologize in advance. TWO books I recommended to a friend and she changed like night and day. She is rarely down and is doing a lot better, but when she is down, she listens to them and there she goes to confront the world. I don't recommend any books often so these must be good. :-) 1. How to stop worrying and start living by Dale Carnegie. 2. Outwitting the Devil (listen or read it fully). Look for the shorter version of the book which is the actual interview with the devil. The longer version has a woman butting in every 5 minutes. Advice I'd give myself if I were depressed today: 1. Confront your mortality. In other words, start not giving a flying F. about anything in life. Well, within reason of course. Don't be violating the law now.. or jumping off of buildings... Just do your best to do what you need to do to resolve your problem. If it worked, fine. If it didn't, f. it! 2. Move. Don't stay put. Stay busy. Don't get to have the leisure to think whether you are miserable or not. 3. Control your sex expression. Control your excessive masterbation, which is the cause of many people's, especially the young ones, depression today. Make sure you research all about masterbation (misspelled on purpose) and what it depletes your body of. You might need to take zinc and other supplements. Talk to your doctor first. This might be the cause of your depression. 4. Drink a lot of water. Water is the basis of all life and that includes your body. Your muscles that move your body are 75% water; your blood that transport nutrients is 82% water; your lungs that provide your oxygen are 90% water; your brain that is the control center of your body is 76% water; even your bones are 25% water. Yet, most of us don't even know what water is. Our health is truly dependent on the quality and quantity of the water we drink. We are ALL dehydrated. Thirst is not an accurate measure of dehydration.

I failed out of my first year of uni . Kept failing the same class and my other grades weren’t high enough to pull up my gpa. I was lazy and unmotivated , couldn’t write one sentence for a 8-9 page paper . That’s my depression for you .
@kerd4

I'm also on the verge of failing my first quarter/year. It's not laziness, it's a legitimate mental block that bars the way to every task. Just know you're not a failure for trying and not succeeding. Uni isn't made for depressed people; it's made to pressure people. And some people break like that.

And I have bad anxiety Plus I’m scared to ask my mom to get therapy session Because she’s going to end up asking questions why. So I’ve had depression for 10 months... just haven’t realize

I know that they're already having a hard time with life and I don't want to add with their troubles. I know it's bad to keep things to myself but I've done this to myself anyway. I can see that everyone is trying their best but it feels like I'm just stuck in time and can't seem to function. I've been procrastinating a lot and have been oversleeping. I know that something is wrong and I need to do something. but I always end up in my bed hoping that I'll disappear as if I never existed.

Judging by this I'm either permanently mildly depressed or a slob. Showering, along with other tasks, feels like such a chore most of the time. I thank God every day for my wife, and my treatment team. I was the person described hitting 9 for 9 and with hypersomnia. I was so exhausted all the time. I could not find a reason to do things. I felt worthless. I couldn't be motivated. I became bed-ridden. Eventually my legs stopped working. It's been a long hard challenging road back to stability and I'm not even halfway there yet, but I can see it on most days. Others, I feel like killing myself. The pain of depression is overwhelming and unrelenting. Once it bites you, it's like a gator that shakes the shit out of you, locks its jaws in, and won't let go. People who don't have this condition often times have clueless "cmon get happy" answers -- they don't see it like a real medical condition. It's as stupid as saying to a kid with a broken leg, "Cmon think positively and run!!!" I get triggered and snap with that kind of prejudiced ignorance.

This doctor really knows her subject. Burnout as precursor to depression makes great sense to me. I have family history of depression and I have mixed bag of that, reactive and post natal, but maybe it was just peaks and troughs. Had many years of poor treatment, haphazard, erratic. My current GP practice spotted my distress, b competent caring doc, my personal doc changed medication and will listen. I will go for therapy in next couple months. Good luck to all who struggle. ❤

the first time i realized I had a problem was in 6th grade when i became obsessed with my weight and body, and instead of working out i became unmotivated and only thought of how i was never gonna be the person i wanted to be, I started to skip lunch in school and skipped breakfast, but my mom found out and made me start eating lunch and breakfast again. So i gave up on that and started becoming happy again. Then it happened again in 7th grade when i started being insulted at school by some people. Nothing was fun anymore, I stopped having lunch again. And then it went away.. then now this whole quarantine i’ve been on and off depressive moods and motivated moods that happened month after month. K started cutting and staying up late and stress eating. Right now I’m confused on if i’m happy or sad, but I constantly have thoughts of hanging myself in my room and ending life because it’s too much for me. It doesn’t feel severe but my thoughts are severe. It’s like i’m numb, and not sad nor happy, but want to die.

If you are not depressive, you just can't understand how sad it is. The lack of hope is numbing and a whole different level of sad. But you just have to keep going and be grateful for everything you have! If you say thank you to life it can lift your spirits. Practice Gratefulness!

Hi Reenougle! Thanks for your input. That's very encouraging for others to hear. You're right, I don't think a person who hasn't been depressed can really understand how dark it can get. Thats why some people will poo poo it as not a real illness or get over it, etc. But we just have to ignore all that chatter and press forward. Stay grateful...🙂

I’ve been suffering from severe depression symptoms for years, tried to get diagnosed but my parents always act like i have no rights to feel the way i do. It was worse when i was 13 but the change of environment made things less bad. I used to not be able to get out of bed but i was forced to and everyday all i want to do is cry and sleep which i can’t because my parents thinks that missing a day of school means i won’t get into college because to put it simply, they are idiots who dehumanize their kids like some parents do. It got better when i changed school and was put in a less toxic environment. I wake up every morning and felt so numb, spent two years trying to get better but instead now that i’m looking back, I was just letting myself drown in the misery. This year, i changed school again and the environment is drastically better but i’ve spent so long barely functioning that it hurts so much knowing that no matter how hard i try, i’ll never be able to improve if i don’t get the help i needed yet because of my age, my parents have to give consent but no matter what i do, they still make me feel like i have no rights to feel the way i do. It hurts so much and it is just so frustrating, i’m always so exhausted, i can’t remember past a day, i have no motivation... the only thing keeping me going is hoping from one unhealthy obsession to another before i can’t anymore and i just wallow in my misery once more, wishing the days would pass by faster. I’m so done with dealing with people, i can’t have friends more than a few months before i started to get so worn out by trying to keep up with friendships. It sucks. I’m affected academically, physically, mentally and socially by these overwhelming whatever that i don’t even know for certain exists or not. I just want to get professional help so i can move forward but everytime i tried, i’m left feeling worse than before. I feel so helpless, just watching the day past by until my life is completely ruined because i’m too young to get the help i needed on my own. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to have to suffer because my parents are too insensitive. I don’t want to feel like it’s my fault anymore.

I've really got into your channel over the last week and yes they are not diagnosis videos but I am learning alot to point me in the direction of my issues and understanding everything alot more. Anyway point of my comment was I thought that book would be alot bigger like a big old encyclopaedia with the amount of knowledge it would need to detail not that small little thing

I really feel for the young people out there who are helpless and despairing of getting help. Depression often has physical symptoms: headaches, gut problems, that "knot" in your stomach, etc. Tell your parent that your stomach, head, whatever hurts, and you need to see a doctor. You will not be lying, and this will be a giant step toward getting help. Tell your mother that you need to see the doctor alone, or quietly signal to the nurse that that's what you want to do, and let them handle it. Tell the doctor all and let him/her take it from there. Often medication is needed to adjust the chemicals in your brain that are making you depressed, or therapy is prescribed. Doctors see such cases in teens more often than you think, and they know how to deal with skeptical parents.

When I had depression, it was so obvious! I felt a great NUMBNESS of my emotions! And over all this numbness there was a real heavy sadness, without really knowing the reason for the sadness!
