red to red and you're dead. This dead power supply has prevented you from frying this motherboard, as you **CAN** put the AT plug in the wrong order, and you did it the first time. ps: cool video, druaga :3

Have you thought about learning to solder? It could save you a lot of headache on broken pc parts. It's a lot easier than you think, you basically take a 500c stick and poke some metal until it melts. The hardest part is having parts, and they're dirt cheap from ebay. Replacing caps will normally cost you 1-5$ depending on what it is. That's after the upfront cost of buying an okay soldering iron, You generally need to spend around 50$ to get anything that'll be easy to use. Soldering is only hard if you have a crappy iron. And if you do go to solder, get a chisel tip, you might think that a smaller tip would let you get into smaller areas for easier soldering. It isn't, Using a conical tip makes soldering a nightmare, it has little to no thermal mass that makes it really hard to solder at all. I only brought this up because i want to watch you solder.

Have you tried booting with Plop or some other boot manager floppy disk? They might be more acceptable of weird partitioning schemes. Personally I've even managed to boot from USB on a Pentium 1 with Plop, so I'd imagine it'd work quite well here.
@xan12426 жыл бұрын
Ploppy floppy I recommend. Not sure if he'll see it lol And yea I installed Win2k and 98 off the USB drive on a P1 MMX.
@nilswegner28816 жыл бұрын
xan1242 win2k on a Pentium mmx???! That's insane, I thought installing XP on my p2 was a sin!
@xan12426 жыл бұрын
Nah mate, WinXP runs on a pentium 1 just fine! Heck I'd be running it instead of 2k if I had the drivers for my s3 card. It's all WinNT 5 anyway, it runs pretty much the same, it's the UI that's just a little more demanding so XP without the themes would work just about as well as 2k. The newest OS I could run so far was FreeBSD a couple years ago. Only ran Fluxbox with it but if I had a bit better graphics card I'd dare to run LXDE or even XFCE. Shoulda tried WindowMaker in retrospect, that runs great! If you want to talk sins, installing Win2k over the course of 2 days on a PS2 over an x86 emulator, now that's a sin of wasted time. (BSOD on first bootup, not during setup, so I technically ran Win2k on a PS2 already hehe) Otherwise yea, PLOP is amazing! The installation times were surprisingly fast (probably due to the nature of solid state medium).
@nilswegner28816 жыл бұрын
xan1242 Yeah, Plop is wonderful, if it would only work on my Pentium 3 gaming PC. It won't boot off a floppy disk or a HDD for some strange reason that I was not able to find yet

I'm pretty sure the first fanless AT power supply didn't start because the power connectors were plugged in the wrong way. First one was black wires out on both connectors, black wires should be one next to another on both connectors so black wires are in the middle when both power connectors are plugged into AT motherboard plug

I think Dr. Frankenstein did it better. *Non-removable CMOS battery:* unsolder the battery, then solder in a connector for a 2xAA battery holder (assuming a 3 volt CMOS battery-check your motherboard's requirements). Make sure to install the battery holder someplace safe, where it won't get hot or if it leaks it won't be on anything important. My preference is to install it on the outside of the case for easy access.

Yeah, I know, it's not in stereo, but neither are his thoughts. Now, if only we had a way to reprogram him. - Bring out the inner hippy within. Maybe he could do the PC-4-20 Challenge - make a pipe or bong only from materials found on, in, or connected to a PC.

Would the requirement of an old vintage motherboard be because you needed a board without UMA shared memory for graphics card's? Makes sense too me abandon any motherboard with built-in shared memory video card's. Even dedicated graphics card's could use this memory so you may not be able to create a page frame address with EMM386.exe for ems support even emulated through software. It's just best too know your mobo. And now day's their limitations for DOS.

The next time you install an ATX power supply, make the effort to secure it down better. Drill some holes in the back of the case if needs be. Holding the power supply down with one screw is just stupid. I think i would have broken by now if i was held down by one screw.
