I lived and worked in Albuquerque my entire adult life, 38 years. Four years ago, we moved out of state due to the appalling crime rate. We didn't want to leave (husband born and raised in NM), but I knew there was a cleaner, safer place for us to live. New Mexico has no funding and no plan. Thanks for this video.

@Cameron, the last thing we want is for you to relocate. You liberals have a tendency of turning the city you're moving to into the same one you are fleeing from as soon as y'all get the opportunity to vote. For the sake of humanity, stay put!!!

i live in NM, i was homeless in santa fe, ive lived in abq for awhile and imma tell you that the lifestyle for me was the most addicting part. the drugs were very well the reason but the fast lifestyle is something that just never leaves my mind. i hate going to santa fe because every street corner on cerrillos reminds me of using, my twin brother and i lived in a tent behind walgreens and we would wake yup every day and steal from stores, to get well, we would traffic drugs to stay well too, and idk why thats so appealing to me. i have tbh living that lifestyle was the MOST fun ive ever had, thats in my entire life it was like i was at an amusement park every day! thank god im sober for 6 years now and i can promise you it gets easier. once you start accomplishing and gaining things it makes it easier because you know in your mind that no matter how careful you are your life will always turn to shit, and you will 100% lose everything! godbless you brotehr! i honestly think its funny how are state is freaking out abnout the homeless, WE WILL NEVER GET RID OF THE HOMELSS UNTIL WE DEAL WITH THE DRUG CRISIS, nnd we will most likely never do that unless we make clinics/regulate substances, so good luck USA

So sorry for your loss. My husband overdosed in 2015, right after I had just got home from being gone for 3 months in rehab. I know it’s not the same as your loss but it’s kinda same-same. My daughter and I are from Albuquerque. I started using and eventually my daughter started using. It took a while eventually we begin using together, supporting each other's drug habit. We're both clean now. We had to go into a Recovery Behavior Health Group Home Program that implemented a lot of mindfulness therapy, which had to be far away in another state (Phoenix Az) so we wouldn't get to many triggers. We're still healing, learning and relearning healthier lifestyles of sober living. It's beautiful to be able to live in sobriety again. I praise my Lord and savior, Jesus for this change. I challenge those who are using to take that step and seek help, there's a lot of resources out there, you just got to want it really bad. There's no " it's to late for me" that's a lie straight up from hell.

my brother and I have been using for half our life nearly, we both live in alb and were victims of physical mental and sexual abuse since childhood. I wish changing my life was as easy as getting clean. but it's not getting clean is the easy part I have faced far worse demons. the hard part is having a place to stay after and loving people to support me. every time I achieve sobriety we are forced to live back around the people who caused us harm which is nearly almost impossible to not relapse with major ptsd, manic depression, schizophrenia, u name it.. god has never helped me no matter how much I pray. if addiction were strictly the problem, I could have lived a normal life

Heinous....I've lived in NM for 30 years and have never seen the 'Q so bad. It was bad in the early 2000's, then considerably improved. But it's undeniably regressed. I avoid politics, but the mayor should resign for the good of the community. The lack of safety in the city is completely unacceptable.

Really had no where to go, but made the street my temporary home here and there. I'm now in Phoenix, Arizona living in a beautiful house while rehabilitating. But after, I hope and pray that I can get an apartment or rebuild my home on the Dine' reservation. First thing first...get a job. Thank you for shining the light on the homeless. Some of the most dangerous places I knew of are now gone, and some scary neighborhoods have improved greatly. I still love this town though. You are right though, several homeless I have run into have no interest or cant improve themselves. Those that can improve their situations do, but you hit it on the head the one thing that makes all the difference, someone to give you support. Homeless is a state of mind and spirit. Christ nor His disciples or the first Christians worried about being homeless. The true problem with homelessness is the people it annoys and that people won't truly help. Nothing is written in stone or ancient writings of wisdom saying man should have a home or spend the majority of his life paying for one. Naked you came into this world and naked you will leave it.

Thank you for sharing your perspective and your experience. I too was homeless. I still Live in War Zone. I still struggle every day to stay afloat. And I feel for a lot of these people on the streets. Like you said, if your parents hadn't put you up rent free things may not have changed for you, not having that Step Up. A lot of these people have families who gave up on them, or they gave up and ran away from their families. Personal problems and issues, and the ego and pride associated with those issues. Homelessness is a really hard issue to pinpoint and tackle because it's such an individualized issue and doesn't have a one way solution like so many think. This situation is real, and 2 years later, the cops can now mess with them due to the recent Supreme Court Ruling that it's Illegal now to be homeless basically. They have recently been going to the encampments and ID'ing everyone and taking the ones in with warrants, which is a good thing, but as some of us know, they are simply going to be released right back onto the streets. This whole situation is a revolving door! It's never going away until each family takes their family members back in and start to show care for their own, instead of shuning them away and making them a public problem instead. I hope you're taking care of your parents now, after they gave you that place rent free and gave you that time to get your life back in order. Give thanks every day. Always show gratitude. Thanks again for sharing!

The answer to the homeless problem is to start enforcing all the laws. No loitering, no littering, etc. Make it jail time instead of fines. As a former addict who was homeless in ABQ for 4 years, I can tell you. Until you mess with their high, they have no incentive to change. Right now addicts have damn near free run of the city. They can walk into stores and take food or whatever they want, nobody stops them. Ideal environment for an addict.

The only reason we arent near Chicago numbers is the population is less than half there's. I wont go outside my house without a gun on me. And I live in an upscale neighborhood. Our mayor has destroyed this city and or governor has destroyed this state.

I live downtown ABQ. I've spoken to a bunch of homeless. A lot of people feel they don't have access to medical care, behavioral health and more. Almost all of the homeless people refuse to use public housing because of the rules for occupation. First thing on the housing rules is no drugs and no extra unauthorized visitors. So many homeless actually "enjoy" not having responsibilities.

I work in the housing industry and we offer housing opportunities to people who are homeless. You are correct that most people DO NOT want nor know how to function in housing programs. The majority bring in other homeless individuals to shower, sleep, get high, etc. and in turn get evicted and end up back living on the street. Unfortunately, there aren't enough case workers to conduct weekly check-ins, ensuring people participate in recovery programs, and are following the rules of their housing contract. Blessings to you and your girlfriend on your recovery journey.

There is crime EVERYWHERE here - it is not just as heavy in different areas. I live in a nice upper middle class neighborhood. The neighborhood has all generations and schools within walking distance. I know my immediate neighbors. It is in the far NE Heights. But we have vandalism, break-ins and even a home invasion with-in a block of me. I have lived in ABQ for over 30 yrs. I lived in the neighborhood he is walking around when I first came here. But the crime has increased across all neighborhoods. There was an armed home invasion in the High Desert Subdivision just recently.

There’s a serious drug problem here. There’s trash everywhere. I drive I40 every morning and the trash on the sides of the freeway is ridiculous. Trash everywhere. That’s what people see driving through Albuquerque. Disgusting. NM is currently No 2 on the list of worst state to live in. I agree and I’ve been here since 86.
