I was stationary on Interstate 40 near the 157 milepost in the median observing eastbound traffic. I noticed a white Kia Sorento pass by me traveling east in the right lane with two white males in the front seat. A tractor trailer was entering the eastbound lane from the 157 entrance ramp. The white Kia had the whole left lane to go past the 18 wheeler but instead stayed in the right lane traveling up too close to the 18 wheeler that was entering the interstate. I pulled out of the median and attempted to catch up to the Kia.
I made the stop near the 159 milepost at 1:34 p.m. I came in contact with the driver Andrew Bishop out of Oklahoma and Eldon Maxwell out of California. I could smell the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. I could also see suitcases stacked in the backseat. Bishop told me he rented the car on Turo. He showed me the rental agreement on his phone and it showed he rented it yesterday and it was due back on Thursday. Today is Tuesday so I knew that was going to be a quick trip. He told me they were going to North Carolina for a family emergency. I talked to Maxwell and he told me they were going see his family. He told me they were going to be there until the end of the week. He told me it wasn't an emergency.
I asked Bishop how much marijuana he had in the car. I told him I was going to search and just to be honest with me. He told me he didn't know how much was in there and that he was just driving. He told me he was getting paid around $2500 to take it North Carolina. He told me Maxwell had done this before and was just making sure it got there. I placed Bishop and Maxwell in custody and opened the back of the KIA. There were three black trash bags and four suitcases full with a total off 113 vacuum sealed bags of marijuana weighing approximately 1 pound each.
I read them both their Miranda Rights and they stated they understood. A.C. Lewis Towing transported the vehicle tow Troop A Headquarters for us to unload the evidence. Bishop and Maxwell were kept in a holding cell at Troop A Headquarters before being transported to Pulaski County Detention Center and booked in on the following charges:
