the guitar sounds like it was taken out of a Steely Dan song. I absolutely love it

Seems like most of these newer 70s style bands take a lot of inspiration from steely dan, and it’s the best decision that could be made.

Whoever did the visuals for this vid did a great job. I always love hearing isolated audio tracks in music breakdowns, it's like hearing the music you love with a totally new set of ears.

I’m bummed that I never went to see them pre-COVID. Insanely underrated and they collab with all my other favorite LA alt artists.

I assumed it was a song about modern songs written in the 'style' of older songs not being rip-offs. I feel that there's some cynicism directed towards modern artists reviving older genres and fools is kinda saying that its more cultural appreciation and not appropriation. Plus I think we have a misconstrued perception of time in such a fast moving society where each decade is super different. Classical music was the music for centuries, genres don't have to be contained to the time period in which they were originally created or held initial relevancy.

I agree for the most part. I like plenty of music that's "retro" or pastiche in that sense, including these guys. I think the criticism comes from when the modern artists receive excessive or "undue" praise for it, usually from people that don't know their music history. Like if someone is receiving accolades by people who think they're reinventing the wheel, when they're really just trying real hard to do their best Mick Jagger impression, etc. Not to knock those artists or the people who enjoy it, but there's something to be said for when musicians at large more or less exclusively look to the past for their sounds, instead of being present, or looking forward. It seems to lead to a stagnation of sorts, or cannibalizing and repeating the same cliches and motifs more often than what would normally occur within the cyclical nature of some parts of culture. My issue with it comes from my desire for all art, especially music, to be constantly changing, and constantly moving forward, and I want that to happen across the board for music, not just within the experimental and the avant garde. I make music, and I don't pretend to be revolutionary about it, I just try to make what I hear in my head, and what sounds good to me, without trying to ape anything too much. For however true the idea of 'nothing new under the sun' is, we should at least make an earnest attempt, I feel.
