absolutely, sometimes i feel weird about how Eleanor covers these types of things as if they’re completely over. like, this video doesn’t nearly cover the entire “dark history of hollywood exploiting and abusing women”, it should probably just be titled something about judy garland more specifically, because there is SO much more to cover between Judy Garland’s experiences and our modern Hollywood. ofc i don’t expect Eleanor to cover ALL of it, but it’s still very inspecific and glosses over the modern parallels to this situation that happen everyday.

Whenever I tried to discuss the hardships of their lives as I grew up and understood more, it was almost like she could not process it and brushed it off as 'show business'. I read something else about the fire situation with Margaret (the Wicked Witch) and because the makeup was so toxic it essentially singed and captured the heat of the fire and was burning her face even AFTER the fire was out. Apparently the actors could hear her screams and moans for a long time. They had to rush to get the makeup off her face, but the only thing they had that could remove it was ALCOHOL. She was moaning and screaming endlessly in pain. And they wanted her back the next day? Her face was scarred for life.

I got into “The Wizard of Oz” back in December and was saddened learning how toxic the set truly was, especially regarding Judy. Apologies in advance for this comment. I didn’t think it’d end up being this long, but I’m passionate about my hyperfixations. 😅 Nearly everyone in the main cast suffered in some way: Judy with her mother and drugs; the original actor for Tin Man being hospitalized due to the makeup; Jack Haley taking his place and having a hard time wearing the suit, not being able to even sit properly or comfortably and having to lay vertically on a board to rest; Ray Bolger nearly getting severely burnt when his Scarecrow costume caught fire; Bert Lahr risking heat stroke because of his costume (which was a real lion skin) and Margaret getting those severe burns. Even Terry (Toto’s actress) wasn’t spared! One of the Winkie guard actors accidentally stepped on her and broke her paw! She had to recover for weeks and they used replacements until then. Also her handler was paid more than Judy! :/ The set was also very hot and stuffy. The film itself is gorgeous and I love it very much, but it’s a shame nearly everyone basically suffered in its making. I believe the only friends Judy had on set was Margaret and Ray. I read Ray was like a father to her and behind the scene footage of them showed that they had a great relationship and their friendship lasted for decades; Ray even protected Judy by shielding her when a light fixture burst-and he was wearing his flammable Scarecrow outfit! Judy even had Ray on her show once and they sang “If I Only Had a Brain” and were shown to be affectionate and lovable to one another! I think Judy also had a great friendship with Jack and Bert, there’s not a whole lot of info on their relationship with her. Judy’s daughter did end up marrying Jack’s son, so I’m assuming they had a decent friendship. I’m just glad Judy at least had the love and support of her fellow Oz castmates, especially Ray and Margaret!
@Rose-pe1uu11 ай бұрын
well honestly...while it is true that it was good she made lasting friendships with her costars from the Wizard of Oz (genuine friendships are always nice, no matter the circumstances), what you are actually describing is a form of trauma bonding. it is likely that them forming those bonds is how they made it through the process of filming the movie at all, at least mentally. but its unfortunate that those friendships were formed due to the things they had to go through while making the movie. it would have been nice if they could have become friends under more normal circumstances but...at least they had each other when they needed it the most. i couldnt imagine what would have happened to all of them if they didn't form those bonds.

This hurts my heart so much. Growing up, The Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie. I loved that movie so much that I literally wore out The Wizard of Oz VHS tape we had. My parents said I would not go to sleep without that movie playing. I'm almost 32 and I knew some of the things mentioned in this video but I didn't know about the attempts on her life and how badly she actually struggled. I always found Judy Garland beautiful as a child up til today. People are so cruel, they don't understand that the things they do and say carry so much weight. Thank you Eleanor for covering her story. And I hope Judy is finally at peace 💙

Thank you for making this, I still think about Judy Garland often too as Wizard of Oz was my favourite movie when I was growing up but since learning about the abuse Judy Garland suffered and how it affected the rest of her life I haven't been able to watch it again. Thank you for making more people aware of the truth behind Hollywood and the hidden abuse of women, children and vulnerable people. Looking forward to your next Freaky Friday video.

The Wizard of Oz set was so horrible to all the actors involved, I still can't believe that they all managed to survive the filming of it. Thank you for talking about Margaret Hamilton in particular, my heart just breaks every time I hear about everything she had to endure during the filming, not to mention Billie Burke who played Glinda got much better treatment on set then she did.

You should to a part too because unfortunately these stories are so common. Patty Duke was another child star with a similar story to Judy's.

I’ve watched quite a few docs on Judy’s life and career & it’s one of the most heartbreaking tales you’ll ever hear. She was horribly abused by the studio system from the cruel remarks Louis B. Mayer made about her appearance/weight to the constant pills forced on her that she shouldn’t have been given and her complicated love life & ultimately her tragic passing

This reminds me a lot of the abuse faced by K-pop idols even today. And there’s so much behind the scenes horrors that they have probably gone through too and when all that comes out in a few years it’s gonna be crazy. It’s such a shame that human beings are being exploited to such a crazy extent and for decades too. The entertainment industry always ends up getting away with it tho since it’s such a big and valued part of our lifestyles

Not everyone knows that Judy Garland was born in the small town, Grand Rapids, MN... as Francis Gumm and you can still visit her place of birth and early childhood, that has long since operated as the "Judy Garland Museum." I've always loved her as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and I'm proud to have some of my art permanently owned by the collection. ❤

So heartbreaking that those women and children went through trauma just for entertainment, I remember looking up to Dorothy aka Judy garland and wanted to be her every Halloween. So sad she had to go through this 😢 and when I found out as a child dorephy was dead irl I cried especially finding out she died on my birthday.

Hey Eleanor, you should read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo! It’s one of my favorite books and the main character is an actress in the middle of these studies. It’s fiction, but set in all too real part of history. It’s fantastic and very beautifully queer

I love this new series even though it’s just started. It is absolutely shocking that all these big production companies have done these horrible things to actors back in the day. It makes me feel bad about watching these old films. Judy garlands life was so controlled and hearing the detail of her life was so upsetting to hear. Eleanore has a whole team now. Wow she’s gone up in the world 😮🎉

NOVEL BELOW: Listening to this more and more it sounds a lit like the Korean Idol system. - 7 year contracts - Forced surgery - horrible diets - pills and treatments for weight - no dating without the company's approval - The company selects how the idol looks, dresses, and in many cases act in public and online - debuting minors who have been training since they were toddlers (w/ many being sexualized) And now, with social media and TV, they make idols post what they want and film almost EVERYTHING they do for shows. Oh, and if you aren't the company's favorite, they will make you do all of this but rarely back you outside group activities. In many cases, this means you get less pay. Not sure if it still the case, but the companies used to pay for idols in training, BUT this would be placed as a debt and if the idol debuted, any work done would go to pay off that debt first. Many report having earned little to NOTHING after years of work. One company even made the idols pay for things like music videos and events, in which they would have little to no say in. So yeah, I guess you could do another ff on Korean entertainment companies, and it could be like 500 parts

absolutely. and in the video it is mentioned that gay celebrities were concealed. same in the kpop industry. kpop idols are people, and people can be gay. i disagree with kpop fans who believe in ships. ships are encouraged by the companies to attract fetishizers. but i do believe that there are probably some gay, lesbian or bi kpop idols who will always be forced to hide themselves.

I LOVE THIS!!!!! I love all of your content but this really just suits you! One of your biggest draws is your pure, unadulterated empathy. You have such a gift for telling stories about even the most awful things in a kind and compassionate way, you’re a gem! I found this first eopisode of this new series super interesting, I have also always felt so sad for Judy Garland’s unfortunate life, really so heartbreaking that she never seemed to have real happiness in her short life after all she had endured. Looking forward to more of this serious! Also, you look amazing (always have) but STUNNING in this video! 🖤
