Are you looking to build a Druid for your Dungeons and Dragons campaign but have trouble coming up with its motivations and backstory? Well this guide is for you. This DnD guide won't be one to go over stats and spells but rather the driving force behind your character. While D&D has a great basis for this the Color pie will indeed push it a step further. With this Druid class Guide you will be able to build a more interesting druid using the color pie as a tool to do so. Color Philosophy is an amazing tool for understanding complex character and in building them. After watching this druid guide I am confident you will be able to create a character you love to play.

A D&D character I always wanted to build was a green Dragonborn Circle of Spores Druid with an Urchin Background. I normally tend to go for the unusual route, but this concept would be a purely green Druid. He would look more like a chinese Dragon with a long snout, long extended neck and "snout tenticles" that resemble the long thin chinese beards we know in stereotypical wise old chinese men. With his long neck stretching forward, it would almost look like he has a hunch, but he doesn't. He also has Fungi growing on his scales. His character would be simple. Growing up in a rough environment of a big city he saw plenty of death and cruelty. He survived by consuming the things other throw away and getting sustanance from the Fungi growing on the Junk people discarded and did not care about or eating rotting food. Due to being old of age he has also seen, that those, who took other peoples lifes ultimately end up the same way as everyone else by dying and rotting away. He learned death was nothin g to fear and provides ground for new life and sustenance to grow. The best example being the Fungi, which grow in places wewre death is most present and present an avenue for other lifes to continue by giving sustenance. Therefor he followed that philosophy not worrying about death or being sad about it. That's just life. It always ends and begins anew. As a partymember it's always important, that he works well in a group of characters. If he found people he trust and cares for he helps them along their goals as he himself has none anymore and just lives from day to day. He cares deeply for those he calls friends, but isn't sad when they die, because they have just gone to the next stage in the lifecycle. But he will still remember them fondly.

When I think of natur change and motion are easiy to overlook, as with our short life spand the forest never seems to change. But just like a caterpiller changes and grows up to be a butterfly so to does the forest. Habitaes are destroyed and rebuild. Nothing is stail, which feels more like red to me. When we look to history we finds thst the druid and the bard was one and the same. And just like how nature is full of change equaly is it fill with music. The wind whispering, the rain drumming and the animals sound are all part of the orcesta of the circle of life My point is green may seem like the core but I would argue so is red

I'd say the actual Druid Class card is amongst the better made out of the Forgotten Realms cycle. Green as a color fits for most Druids, and while it is trying to push a specific archetype (Lands Matter decks), it doesn't detract from the class' flavor in doing so. You gain life when lands enter the battlefield, play more lands, and turn a land into a huge beater. This is unlike Bard class in which I'd say Red-Green fits only a type of Bard, or Sorcerer class in which Blue-Red not only fit only a specific Sorcerer type, but its abilities and trying to make it a card for Izzet-spellslinger or Phoenix decks trumped over flavor; or even Cleric class in which trying to make it fit specifically for lifegain decks detracted from a lot of what clerics can be. EDIT: oh...you mentioned basically that in the video lol, silly me.

I've been workshopping a space opera setting and one idea I had for a megacorp is Gaia corp the basic concept is "what if druids industrialized?" They develope flora and fauna that can survive in a variety of environments and terraform planets for better habitation to even creating organic space vessels but they have several shady under dealings such as developing bio weapons both the large and microbial variety. Traditional druids hate them as they see them as a anathema while Gaia corp argue they have done more for the galactic community than traditionalists ever done. (I know they sound a lot like the Simic but I only realized that after coming up with them.)

I mean for me MTG is what made me fall in love with the concept of Druidry. So much so, that Kamahl has been my favorite character ever since i was a child, and even though i never had a chance to play D&D I know for a fact visually he would be completely based on Kamahl thats how much the character means to me. My only pivet would be is that he would be focused on shapeshifting as his main form of combat.

For Green/White, I think FF14’s Conjurers and White Mages of Gridania are a great fantasy expression. Generally, Druid/Green and Cleric/White from a Western perspective is usually shown as the conflict and dichotomy of “pagan” vs. “Christian”. Green at conflict with White of old/false against new/true. FF14 (and many other JRPGs) have the benefit of drawing from a different perspective: that of Shintoism. In this view, nature is neither in opposition nor distinct from that of civilization. The corruption of one tips the balance into disaster. FF14’s Conjurers and White Mages have Shintoism written all over them, though given the trappings and aesthetics of Celtic fantasy and elves. Of all the fantasy games, FF14’s version does an amazing job showing the complexities of that type of society, what a “modern druid” can look like and the societal struggles and pressure that they have. Usually now I like to draw on the Druid as an animist, not just an ancient Celtic priest. From this, I like to draw from my understandings of India and Japan on a Green/White society. Anyway, great vid as always!

I also would like to add that black in a druid often entails an understanding of the reality of death as a necessary part of life, as demonstrated by Witherbloom College and the Golgari Swarm. An acknowledgement that death is not a fate to be avoided, but a part of the natural cycle to be embraced, returning all things to where they came. Black druids are patient, relentless, and pragmatic, and they're willing to embrace the dark aspects of nature many life-oriented druids shy away from, hence the persistent beetle and fungus motifs of Golgari+ druids.

Eva, my DnD character for Ravnica Future, is a Simic half human elf with aquatic mutations, is a Green Blue Black (Sultai) druid, focusing on Blue. Her main drive is curiosity, especially for magic and the natural world and is consistently evolving as life move forward (Blue), while she bond herself into understanding the fundamentals of life and physics that as she is a biologist (Green), but she also has an ambition side to go the extra mile to uncover the mysterious of the universe and to delve into uncomfortable truths that would grant true mastery of the nature of things (Black). Eva shows the more forward thinking and realistic side of the druid, her choice of animals can be seen as cruel but practical, or great at uncovering the mysterious, like spiders, frogs, owls, etc. Also her race represents while bring an extra layer to her colors. Simic Hybrid (Blue, gills allowing to explore the seas and evolution), Humanity (Black, the willpower to do whatever it takes to advance the sciences), and Elven (Green, the wisdom to understand the greater interconnectivity of the world and to respect the natural world of life and magic).

I'm a fan of Bant or Naya druids. Less hermit out the wilderness, and more a Taoist sage trying to keep the balance between the benefits of civilization, and the wonder and majesty of nature. Something that I think comes up a bit too often when people approach druids is our post-enlightenment concept of duality. The idea that there has to be this sharp divide between civilization and wilderness, when for a lot of cultures throughout history civilization has simply been part of nature. There's a lot of cool examples, but things like Native Americans or Aborigines doing controlled burns to maintain an ideal ecosystem to live in. Or, as I mentioned, Taoists in ancient China who ran a gamut from isolated hermits to scholars and nobles writing poems and painting pictures during garden parties. After all, in a world where the supernatural is real and there really are nature and elemental spirits, you'd expect even the most "advanced" of societies to want people who could serve as a bridge.

I recently created Drow Circle of Spores Druid alchemist which represents Black/Blue/Green colors for my BG3 run and I am having a ton od fun. Sultai is not evil - he is driven by curiosity and study of forbiden and darker cornwrs of natures magic in order of fulfilling his selfish needs and ambitions due to harsh childhood in Underdark.

Great video! I'm currently playing a Jund Druid with that philosophy, but my latest character is interesting here too. He was born and raised with Druids as a nature themed Cleric, but he wasn't green at all, instead white-blue. This made him question the old ways and the rest of the tribe, as he thought they were living in the past and should adopt things like metal armor and a juridical system. Not sharing their green ideology was what made the character give up on the tribe and join the campaign.

U/G is my favorite color combination that I also happen to vibe most with. In many games, I find that this color combo / philosophy is under represented, and even in MTG, Simic is less like how I perceive the color combo, as it focuses a bit too hard on the force evolution side.

Here’s my ideas of what colours are best fitted to each druidic circle. (Note: This is what I find present in the mechanics of the class/subclass combination, not what I think a character with that class/subclass *has* to be. Play your druid however you want.) Circle of Dreams - Simic. Divination and dreams are very blue. Circle of the Land - Depends on the land type you choose. Arctic is Bant, coast is Simic, desert is Bant, forest is mono-green, grassland is Selesnya, mountain is Gruul, swamp and underdark are Golgari. Circle of the Moon - This could be mono-green, but any and all colour combinations with green can work too. Circle of the Shepherd - This is probably the most clearly Selesnya druid. Circle of Spores - Obviously Golgari. Fungal zombies and all. Circle of Stars - This is a druid that might not actually include green in its colour identity. The class’s focus on the study of celestial bodies, divination, and radiant damage seems more white and/or blue aligned. Thus, the Circle of Stars seems more mono-white or Azorius to me, though Bant and Selesnya are possible to. Circle of Wildfire - Obviously Gruul. So much fire.

Personally, I think green is not a necessary part of druid, even if it does make the basic druid. Since a druid could potentially embody the element of caos, change and mutation in nature. Thus, this druid would probably appreciate civilization, and try to integrate it into nature or sees it as an extention of it. This druid does not care for balance, if anything it is more likely that it will be against it, but not all of them will be. These druids would be excited about seeing, learning and experiencing new stuff and would be natural adventurers and nomads, moving from point to point to feel the great diversity of nature, and sometimes even create new plants, animals or structures. Some shaped well to their enviroment, others too well and others not well enough, but that doesn't matter to much as the creation of these things. Now that I write it, I can see this kind of character being a bard as well as druid. But the druid probably has better mechanics for it.

Are you going to make videos for how the enemy pairs can work for each class? I admit, I love Red-White (Boros or Lorehold) and this video reminds me of the philosophical contrast between the typical Druid (Mono-Green) and the typical Rogue (Blue-Black or Dimir). Red-White is square-in-the-middle between the two while the Druid and Rogue both have the element of a trickster; this makes me wonder if there is a similar trickster class between the Druid and Rogue which can flow easily into Boros or Lorehold.
