Have some color pie
@AzazinNote Жыл бұрын
The Jeskai art, alongside the core of a monk being white/blue, reminded me of how Tarkir is an interesting color story. When the timeline was changed . and the dragons took over the clans, they made each drop a color, and changed because of it. Or more acuratly, they changed to fit the dragons philosophys, and that was reflected in their color identity. Abzan droped black as Dromaka oppoused necromancy, Mardu lost white as Kolaghanbroad lack a cohesive structure, Temur became almost as savage as Atarka by leaving blue. Don't really remember how Jeskai and Sultai changed, been a long time since I read the storys.

Sultai dropped the traditions they kept in place. Jeskai dropped their training to keep in touch with emotions rather suppressing them instead of exploring them.

although I agree that Blue is the color that we can associate most with the monk, I belive we can build a monk without this color. For example, we could have a White Green monk (discipline in tradition, nature or spirituality), a Green red monk (passionate following of tradition) or even a White Red monk (passionate discipline)
@shiranuiraccoon7521 Жыл бұрын
I like the idea of a Red Black Monk, an Arrogant Savant who never really got into the discipline part because it all comes so fucking easy for them ( sometimes even... naturally ) that they end up becomes little bastards. I understand why you didn't make this one, you made a simmilar Fighter and Wizard in past videos. Also, im currently playing a Jeskai Monk in a Pathfinder 2e campaign, and my roomate is playing a Jeskai Monk in one of the games i DM for, they are vastly different characters and they have basically nothing in common with the Jeskai Monk you presented in this video, despite being loyal to their 3 colors, i love this system a lot.

I honestly can't wait for the Barbarian. I don't care what people say, even in the flavor of their rage there is so much you can do with the barbaian; make them spirtual and shaministic, make them the blood thirsty beserker, make them a fun loving tavern brawler, heck if you wanted to make them some one that wants to reach an understanding with the world around them and they out rage when such understadnings have been coruptted

As someone who usually runs and identifies with Red/Green, the idea of a Temur or Naya monk intrigues me to no end.

Temur monk would be really cool
@ODDnanref Жыл бұрын
Temur monks would be in tune with nature and emotions. Almost shamanistic to a point. Focus on visions of what is to come by connecting to yourself and the world around you. Perfecting your reading the world when in this state would be blue. I think this would draw heavily on the idea of karma and connection between people and the world. Buddhist monks would be an example, those who do not sever emotion but just worldly desires, emphasize compassion towards everyone and strive to perfect their mentality and achieve Nirvana. Naya monks are a bit tricky there is discipline, there is tradition but not a huge drive to self improvement. They can certainly look to improve themselves, but not for the sake of achieving perfection to reach an ideal, but more to better help their order.

Naya monk....doesnt seem too likely When you consider how much naya depends on raw power and demonstration of your physical form Its more to do woth either a very zealous Paladin or a Barbarian While the core of the monk is blue in nature
@salgutierrez4710 Жыл бұрын
@Luka Arsovski I think the idea I had with a Naya Monk is someone who builds their technique from nature and fights for the natural order. Like wild Shaolin monks, except someone makes Godsire Style

The colour black on a blue-black monk could be refering to their ambition for perfection, the dedication of a lifetime to just one goal, be as great in this art as they can be. This character would suffer in long hard training sessions everyday because they know it's goal is more important than anything else. I think every monk needs a little black in them, the black gaves them this ambition to archive a never-ending perfection although the path to it is full of suffering and it prives them of other things another lifestyle could have gave them. AMBITION at all costs. At the end of the day all humans have all the colours in them, that's the complexity of the human mind. The passion to archive perfection is where their red side comes out, and you explained very well why the green, blue and white are there too. I agree with you that the core colour of this class should be blue but maybe as a second option I would say white-blue-green before white-blue; of all the classes that's the one that's more rooted in following traditions, and a monk usually don't train to change things (sociaty for example) but more for preservation of their traditions and their land, also it's a class that avoids conflict if possible, and just wants to be left alone doing their thing and it's a character that escapes and possibly dislikes sociaty, all these things makes green a very good option to be a core colour of the class, maybe more than white. All this got me thinking and I've reached the point where I think if one class should be 4 colored, it should be the monk. They try to reach the nirvana, a state of mind that goes beyond humanity, beyond good and evil, it's all things. The lifetime journey of every monk could have as aim to embody all five colours in themselves, to master/understand all the primal esences of the world. The martial arts are very 4 coloured themselves indeed: they follow traditions and have a huge respect for the wise ones that have lived before them (green) and also search in nature to inspire them "sting like a bee, move like a butterfly" (green) and have a tremendous ambition that keeps them on track no matter what (black), they believe in archiving their goals through discipline (white) and the perfection of their craft is what they dedicate all the hours of everyday day to (blue). They live outside of sociaty but in their own comunity (that's a very green thing to do). The colour I have trouble trying to fit with the class is red. Monks are associated with stillness, and are more brain-centered than emotionally explosive so, no, I don't thing red could be associated as a core colour of the class. But I can see black, as ambition is key to every martial art, all the work is focused in improving yourself so that's very black.

I find druids and monks to be natural counterparts of each other. One looks within and seeks to master oneself, the other focuses on how we relate and affect everything around us. Both perspectives and directions are vital if we are to grow as a people. A third class I like to pair with these two is the artificer who takes the perspectives of the within and without and applies it to their work so that everyone may thrive.

I once played a Simic Monk and after the video i could assign them Blue/Black. He was a street fighter that sought to gain power by letting himself get experimented on by Simic scientists and through training reach heights he couldn't have reached otherwise. It was so fun to punch and grapple with crab hands and he enjoyed his new found abilities too.

Now I’m thinking of a Jund monk that’s basically Yujiro from the Baki series. Mans who rose up to be the strongest “creature” always on the look out for new opponents, never really delving into his psyche because he doesn’t need to, he is what he is. And god help any that disrespect whatever place he thinks the world has put those people in, because he’ll be damned sure to put them in it. One could argue Yujiro is more of a barbarian, so let’s split the difference and call him a multiclass 😆 and great video, as always, Dicetry!

The main piece to homebrewing I've come up with for D&D is a fix for rangers. Basically a replacement for favored foe, favored terrain, and hunters mark. Rangers keep the Deft Explorer options listed in Tasha's, and at the levels they would pick a new favored foe creature type they instead choose a color of mana, or colorless. At the levels they pick a favored mana they get their int mod worth of bonus languages learned. They also get advantage on all dex, int, and wis ability checks made in relation to anything tied to their favored mana, and deal one extra die of damage on all weapon attacks against creatures tied to their favored mana. Obviously I matched every creature type, terrain type, background, class, and player race to one or more of the colors of mana. Monks and Bards were the classes I matched with colorless, despite what their cards might say. Bards fill roles tied to every color. Blue mana wandering teachers and instructors. Green mana conservationists brokering deals between fey and mortals. Red mana entertainers and rock stars. Black mana charlatans, manipulators, and tricksters. White mana guardians of the oral histories and traditions handed down by the elders of certain societies. Monks got sorted into colorless for a different issue. Monk is the class most likely tied to asceticism. Focus on perfecting your spiritual self by abstaining from the physical world. Let go of all worldly attachments and become one with the universe/cosmos/ void. The class that embodies the flavor text on the card "One with Nothing." Monk is colorless because the pursuit of becoming a monk causes one to effectively bleach the five colors from their very soul. If the five mana colors are truly the building blocks/source of everything in the world, then the "wise old man" in the shrine on top of the mountain at the end of the world who spent his whole life cutting himself off from the rest of the world is never going to be a paragon of any mana color.

I think this may the most interesting interpretation of Monk. In the MTG lore the Jeskai, who are the monks of the plane of Tarkir. In their belief system, there are six fires that light the way to Enlightenment. These are the white soulfire, the red bloodfire, the blue mistfire, the black deathfire, and the green vitalfire. While vitalfire and deathfire are taboo for the Jeskai Way, it is through mastering the White, Red, and Blue fires that lead to the sixth fire. So imagine a Monk that sought out deeper powers because they themselves are Black and Green. Black and Green together are the most likely to seek power through taboo means. It's a monk that believes that by harmonizing with the ki inside them and in others they can interact and manipulate the ki of others. I would see them as a Monk that seeks immortality and complete understanding of their own ki.
@zeropoint2594 Жыл бұрын
How about a Sultai (blue/black/green) Monk who focuses on enlighten themself and doesn´t care for the world or at least for the society of people and instead lives isolated becomming one with nature and have a daoistic approach to the world and simply accept the world as it is knowing its place in the world and is a being of balance to bring the world back to nature or it could be a Monk that is still driven by balance between life and death hunting down undeads and things that destroy the natural world using ki to endure and restoring life where it is needed (with green) and destroy life where it does not belong (black) while still holding up to master themselfes (blue) to become closer to nature

Black is a little iffy. Destroying what does not belong in the natural order is already green. It appears low on their color purview yes, but you have the classic destroy artifact/enchantment. However, you also have graveyard hate to prevent reanimation, and sometimes green destroying zombie spells. If you add his hope to be left alone, to the point where he will attack those that wander near. Or if you add his unwillingness to share his insights it might add some more black. I see black aligned monks as monks that would do anything to grab more power in an order, but at the same time would help you against external enemies. The kind of monk that makes it so you arrive late by dropping or talking to long to you, so you look bad if you mention it, or look bad if you don't. However, they would also be the monk that slams the bandit attacking your monastery to the ground, only to palm strike another one right after.

What color would be used for a monk to study his craft out of grief? Like the thief one but rather than bloodying his hands himself, he fails to save someone close to him. Seeking atonement in a similar sense.

now how would a black blue and red monk look like there is an intresting thought.... I like the hole criminal backstory thing maybe this one didnt realy ever change instead feeling bound and restricted by the monestery or maybe they didnt even go to one and learned martial arts by them selves who knows in terms of classic dnd aligment this one would be chaotic nutrual I am certain of that....

How would you classify a monk who is driven by a maddening faith to it's god, potentially an evil one even, pushing he/her to become both an instrument devoted to spread it's creed while protecting the flock and executioner against those who oppose it's decrees with fists hardened by their dedication? Or would that kind of Chara fill in the image of a monk to begin with?

@@flameofmage1099 why would be black? iirc black its the color of self fulfilment, but in this case feels like the opposite would be more fitting, what is your point of view?

@@nicolasvillasecaali7662 Because of the statement "an executioner against those who oppose", and that kind of view always reminds me of of the White/Black idea of caring about your group and being against all others.
