I was watching a Pete Ray Biggin video ( • Pete Ray Biggin at Dru... ) and was planning to work out lots of his fills. As usual I ended up spending a long time on just one of them - mining it for everything I could.
Two useful techniques in this video plus a big section on the importance/usefulness of using the correct strokes to play accented patterns.
I hope you enjoy it. Please subscribe, rate or leave comments. Let me now what you want to see more of.
Thanks,
Joe

@SamCDrums I added it to the description. Do a youtube search for "Pete Ray Biggin Blue Peter" to see how good he was when he was 13! I remember watching that when it was on TV. I wonder what the other two are doing these days :)

Another cool gospel style idea I see people playing is to do L R F F (or R L F F) as 16th notes, and then play them as 16th note triplets :)

The final fill doesn't even use the ghost notes - they were just to help build familiarity with the fact that the bass drum is replacing part of the single stroke roll - to help you know which hand is next and get used to that feeling. Also, it's good practice to make sure you can accurately line up bass drums with ghost notes (happens in a lot of grooves). Finally, knowing about stickings for playing accents/ghosts is extremely useful for efficient playing. That was the thinking behind it.

@allmetaliswelcome Yes it is. I usually use a Shure Beta52 but at the moment it's got an Audix D6 in it. There's a duster folded up inside - that's all. It just takes the beach bally ring out of the sound. The batter head is a Remo PS3 tuned pretty loose. The resonant head is an Embony ambassador with a hole tuned a a bit tighter.

IT IS ABOUT FEEL BUT WRITING NOTES HELPS YOU INTERNALIZE AND REALIZE IDEAS THAT MAY BE DIFFICULT TO CONCEPTUALIZE BY JUST HEARING THEM. PLUS IF YOU CANT READ AND WRITE WHAT YOU PLAY YOU ARE AN ILLITERATE MUSICIAN. THE ONLY WAY TO MASTER GOSPEL IS TO LISTEN TO IT JUST LIKE ANY OTHER STYLE BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN ITS NOT IMPORTANT TO BE ABLE TO READ AND WRITE. READING WILL TAKE YOUR PLAYING TO HIGHER LEVELS. NOT EVERYONE CAN PLAY EVERYTHING THEY HEAR BY EAR SO READING CAN HELP SPEED THE LEARNING.

I like this specifically the break down. In other words the excellent explanation to find the right sticking. It's a pity that this lesson/instruction is not completed with a notation because you will forget it all as soon as you leave time between the next moment to practice.

Hello, I'm drumming for almost 2 years now but I really do not have any experience playing with a band outdoors but I do always practice at home with my new kit, what are your tips or advice for me? I'm 16 and My dream is to be able to play gospel music, chops etc. Can I do it? How many years for me to be able to get used to it? Or should I practice other type of genre aside gospel?
@joecrabtreedrums
@joecrabtreedrums 4 жыл бұрын
My advice is to practice a lot, and work on things that excite you. As long as you're having fun, that's all that counts. I don't think anybody is playing with bands at the moment, but once it's safe to do that again I'd highly recommend it. Whether it's finding a local jam night, or starting your own band for fun, it's great to play with other people. I think it's good to work on all genres. If you want to make a living as a drummer, it's important to practice basic grooves and be able to play them really well. It's harder than you think. How long it takes to be able to play the things you want to play depends on how much you practice. Some people practice 20 mins 3 times a week, and others practice for 4 hours every day. My advice is to try and practice at least a bit every day, and keep it fun.

I play punk, rock & a little bit of metal but i'm inspired to play gospel by Aaron Spears and a fellow youtuber named kennethb214. I know it's rediculous that a punk drummer is trying to learn gospel but wth. IMO, it seems VERY difficult for me to learn becuz i play punk but i'll give it a try :)

ok, i have no idea why you have to type with all caps. its harder to read. did you read what I said? i said gospel is feel but this guy is trying to teach a specific lick, so of course he has to transcribe it and write it out! its just a way to communicate what he is doing. but you still need the feel to actually pull it off.

you need to transcribe it to show people what you're doing. just because you wrote out the notes, that doesnt meant that you ignore the feel, its not either or.
