I worked as a Scanner Operator in the 80s on Hell, Crossfield and Screen drum scanners. Absolutely loved the job. I also used to do the image retouching on a Mac. Wish I could go back to it today.

Great job, Tony! Nice to see you back here, and great job on the video. You are entirely correct, there is no substitute for a properly exposed and composed negative. My goal is always to create the perfect negative--I'm still working on it! Looking forward to hearing more about drum scanning.

I use the dedicated plustek scanner for 135 film. Would there be a visible difference in quality if I scanned the same 36mm frame using a drum scanner?

It is hard to say without actually performing a test. Sounds like a good experiment and content for YT. If you'd like to try, let me know.

I still mostly shoot 35 mm slide film. The lab where I get my film developed told me that in the past drums scans were superior but today there are scanners made that are equally as good or better than a drum scan. All my stuff is going to be exhibited and I think most of the prints are gonna be around 30 x 40”. What’s your opinion? If I were to do my own scanning and printing from home, what scanner and printer would you recommend for top-quality images?

This is a good question. My recommendation is that you experiment with different methods on the same negative. Try a Nikon CoolScan, Epson V700, or DSLR/mirrorless capture, and have a drum scan. I would then make 8x10 test prints, zoomed in to a specific area and representative of the equivalent area on a 30x40" print, of each of the scans to see how you like the results. For an exhibition, I really wouldn't mess around and I would find the best process that makes your work look its best. That process should be based off of data that you can analyze not anecdotal information from people like me; who are biased towards the equipment they own because this is what gets us the results we are happy with. I'd be glad to scan a negative for you if you want to experiment with a drum scan. That's really exciting to have an exhibition! Congratulations and have fun! Respectfully, Tony
