The double stroke roll works just like the single stroke roll - it’s played in a sequence of alternating strokes (roll). But instead of having one stroke per hand you’ll have two, as shown on the sheet music below. You can use full wrist turns to play each stroke of the double stroke at slower speeds.
Focus on getting consistent sounding doubles for each hand. You can check your stroke evenness by watching your stick heights. Uniform distances from the drumhead to the drumstick for each stroke will hail even sounding doubles. If the first stroke of each set of doubles is louder than the second, your double stroke roll will sound sloppy and uneven.
As you start speeding up the double stroke roll, you’ll naturally start bouncing the second stroke off of the snare drum or practice pad. On toms this will not work as well. Tom-toms have very little bounce to them, and as such, your second stroke will sound muddy.
To work around this issue, you’ll have to play your double strokes exclusively with wrist motion. You can also get a more even sounding second stroke by snapping the fingers on the drumstick after performing the first stroke with the wrists. Work on leading this rudiment with both hands. When you feel you’re pretty competent in playing a double stroke roll on a single surface, it’s time to move on to the drum beats and drum fills on this free drum lesson.
You can start practicing drum beat #1 by playing a steady four-on-the-floor bass drum pattern - a bass drum hit on each quarter note - the snare drum on count 3, and the first 8th note on each double stroke, just to get used to the movements required to execute this pattern perfectly. Once you get comfortable with it, double the 8th notes on each tom to complete this double stroke roll drum beat.

That is also called flying finger. It gives you finger control. I also use that technique to be able to play 250+ bpm. I use heavier sticks to do this like 2B-5B. 55A works well too. I prefer between 5A and 5B for blast beating. Wrist motion works for doubles. You can call it a snap like Mike Terrana called it. Works for doubles.

Wow. What a great video. Your sticking is on point. Those Tama Star Bubingas are so sweet. Played exact same for a while. Playing a custom Eames birch a lot now and equally amazing. Your set up and skills are so clean and defined. Oh yeah- may I also type that you are a beautiful woman too. My wife would agree. Best to you and yours. Take care & drum on.

This is great advice about using wrists until reaching a certain speed. This is a very hard technique to master, I've been putting in a couple hours a day on strictly push pull. Your hours of hard work show in your playing, very clean singles and doubles and your timing is impeccable.

Have you ever tried death metal drumming? I personally grew up playing metal and rock.. but now Ive gotten into Jazz and gospel style drumming. I noticed a lot of the finger techniques you use to play fast is what we metal drummers use for blast beats. You already got the technique down and you're amazing. I would love to see you try and play blast beats and give metal drumming a try lol. A lot of the techniques you use can also be translated over to other drumming genres like death metal. I actually got bored of playing metal and was looking for a new style to try and immerse myself in. Ive been learning traditional grip, and been playing jazz and African rhythms. I always look to your videos to find out different techniques and inspiration. Are you still giving lessons?

Fingers crossed :D. For me is like, 4 months learning and i am good at 70bpm 32notes on the practice pad. However i had achance to play low tuned snare I couldn't even use this technique. No second stroke..IMHO this technique is good for High tuned snares or cymbals only. Or maybe i was stressed and stiff. I don't know.

Hey, thanks for the comment, it takes time to develop the technique, but once you really get it you can play on any surface. I would practice on a pillow with this tech and it made playing on low bounce surfaces really easy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e33KnYRuYrKbqqs
