One of the most important fine techniques to learn in drumming, and yet it is the one with the fewest videos on KZbin. There are only a handful of good videos which teach this technique well. This is definitely one of them.

Josh, for all the "lessons" and videos I have watched on finger technique and practicing doubles, your video is one of the best I've seen at explaining, demonstrating, and showing different angles of your grip and use of the fingers. Absolutely awesome! Thanks! (and I had NO idea your video wasn't "scripted"!)

I recently came upon the UNT percussion department's snare drum requirements. Their minimum tempo for double strokes to graduate is 32nd notes at 132 BPM. This is faster than I am able to play using the technique you demonstrated here (which I also do, to make my doubles more even), because it's too difficult to minimize the movement enough. I find it easier to play that fast by using only the middle finger, which also happens to be how I was originally taught. Kinda makes sense, if you think about it: the further from the fulcrum you get, the longer the arc the stick makes at that point. So if you want the minimize the amount of movement your fingers make, you should control the sticks as close to the fulcrum as possible. Luckily, I've never had a musical need to play doubles that fast.

I've been practicing non-stop for the past six weeks and I'm *so* happy with the progress I've made. Haven't had this much fun making music in all of my 37 years and almost 20 of drumming. I can play things cleanly and consistently I couldn't imagine even trying half a year ago. That being said - your approach flipped a switch in my head. There's a time before and after, because after trying this for just a couple minutes, it felt like I never did anything else. This might be one of the single most important lessons I've learned while grinding *everything* , so thank you very much indeed!

Been playing drums since I was 6, but only for fun. Could hold a steady 4/4 with the basic fills moving down the kit and ending with a crash. Started a 3 man band 4 years ago as a hobby and to jam with my friends in my free time (I'm now 30), and only last year because of Covid, I really had a lot of time to learn more about drumming. I literally found myself going through all the basics; like how to hold the stick correctly, working on basic rudiments like double stroke rolls, paradiddles and 6 stroke rolls, tuning the drums, reading basic sheet music, etc. I still have a long way to go, but it fascinates me how much these basic tools help in playing. 1 year made a hell of a lot of difference! All this knowledge is out here on youtube, and people like you spend a lot of time doing the dirty work so that the content is available for the rest of us. I have this bank of information, and all I have to do is keep working on these fundamental concepts and rudiments to allow me to physically orchestrate them on the drum set and have them sound good. I've been watching your videos often, and I just want to thank you (and others like you) from the bottom of my heart for taking the time and effort to get these highly informative videos out. You have definitely earned a subscriber and hopefully one day I can get good enough to teach you something!!

Josh, I've been a guitarist for decades, but recently set a goal to learn drums so I could record my song ideas without programming drums. I knew that somehow the double strokes were based on some kind of controlled bounce, but your video made it instantly clear how it works and how to practice it. Many thanks to you my friend!

Oh, this is awesome. Thank you for that basic mechanical explanation on how this is to be accomplished. Other videos are borderline humble-bragging by "displaying" how simple double strokes are to do, but yours actually shows how to train for doing proper double strokes. I appreciate you making this video.

Hi Josh, thanks for the excellent video. I learnt doubles many years ago by accenting the second double and slowly speeding them up until the accent naturally fades away. I guess it would’ve been a Moeller technique using mainly wrist with a little bit of fingers. I just tried to do the 3 finger dropping exercise that you demonstrated and I was surprised that I was able to do it, probably because it reminds me of a push/pull or open/close technique which I have practiced before. I’ll be practicing the double 3 finger drop exercise a lot from now on. Thanks from Tasmania, Australia 🎼🥁🙂

I completely understand the mechanics but one of the things I find hardest is identifying the unevenness, and then connecting that with the cause to fix it. I always assume that the second note will be the quieter, and work on making it louder to ‘even’ it up but there comes a point where I know I don’t sound the same as a professional but can’t quite figure out why…

This is a great exercise. I wished you included more about how the forearm and upper arm comes into play when you play the doubles at top speed. At some point it is no longer just the fingers and wrist producing those doubles. I can see the movement move all the way up to your shoulders as you get faster next faster.

Physiologically speaking, your statement (9:30) is not accurate. Your pinky fingers are not your weakest fingers by any means. In fact, the opposite is true. I speak as an industrial mechanic who has tried to break bolts (and nuts) loose with different configurations of fingers in place on a wrench to settle that very question. I now use my pinkies to really send power to the tip of my sticks as well as to keep my doubles even. My grandfather was a medic during the Second World War (and subsequently became a practicing surgeon) who confirmed my findings and added how much more difficult it was for injured soldiers to have to relearn how to walk without a pinky toe than it would be for injuries involving any of their other toes or combinations thereof. Counterintuitive, I know. I just didn't want to see pinky digits getting sold short (no pun).

You explain it very well on what's necessary to achieve control so I will practice you instructions to get it right.
