I'm so glad that someone else shares my drummer crush on Jean Paul, this was a great video with some even better stories. As for the Led Zeppelin comment, I said it to friends about two years ago, I think modern music fans will say Dave Grohl, but drummers will say Jean Paul. For me, he is the best rock/funk drummer around, technique, power and smarts. Thanks for the video.

@Jason-zx6nj4 жыл бұрын
@@JunkdrummerTV Yes, I was very surprised. J.P is such a cool dude. He is also one of my drumming hero's. I agree with what you said about him and Led Zeppelin. I have said that myself over the years. Now let me tell you my story. in 2004 Clutch had just released Blast Tyrant as well as Slow Hole to China. Me and a couple friends decided to take a road trip and catch two shows on that tour. (BTW the tour featured The Bakerton Group opening up for Clutch, I am sure you are familiar with The Bakerton Group, so it was basically Clutch opening for Clutch). So we arrive extremely early at the venue in Wilmington and not really paying attention to what we were doing we just waked in the back door of the venue and hung out. I notice Neil walking past me among a lot of other people, we didn't say anything cause we didn't want to bother him. So we are just hanging out at the venue hours before the show was to start, then J.P. comes out and starts warming up on his stage kit (this was before they actually had a big tour bus). Me and a fellow drummer friend just stands a little back from the stage and watch him. Finally they start letting people in, which we did have tickets for the show btw. Anyway we stay for the show and drive from Wilmington to Kill Devil Hills, NC for the next show. We get there as the sun is coming up finally got some sleep. We traveled down to The Pit, where they were playing that night and looked around. Had some lunch and later on got ready to go to the show. Thats when the lady at the hotel saw I was wearing a Clutch shirt, she said, "You know they are staying here tonight", I was like you mean in this town? She said no in this hotel (which was nothing fancy). I told my friends and we were like she is full of it. Fast forward to after the show and we have made it back to the hotel had some drinks we were all laughing about the lady saying they were staying there. Right about that we needed ice so I open the door to the room and just as I did we see Clutch in their van pulling in right by our room. I shut the door and turned around with this WTF look on my face. Turns out they were staying that night. J.P. came over to our room and hung out with us while Neil and the rest of the guys were just outside the door by the pool. He stayed for about an hour just shooting the shit with us. After he leaves we start hearing some commotion outside. Well there was a guy and a girl in the pool and I think the guys girlfriend pulled up and caught him red handed with another woman. The words were flying! We all stood outside and watch the show. Clutch was just across the way watching what was going down. Its been a while since I ran in to J.P. at a show but for a while after that every time I would see him he would look at me and say, "Kill Devil Hills". That is my amazing story about Clutch and meeting J.P.

It's so great to see someone with the same geeked out enthusiasm for JP that I have. He's been an absolute favorite of mine since 1993. I got to see them on so many crazy bills here in the NY/NJ area. They were on every show back then ... hardcore shows... hip hop shows. I saw them on a bill with Biohazard and House Of Pain at the Palladium ... so strange but awesome. Around the time of Robot Hive I saw them at a place called Starland Ballroom ... I got there super early and heard drums as soon as I got out of the car. JP literally had a drum kit set up in the bands trailer and was practicing working out of John Riley's The Art Of Bop Drumming. I kind of watched for a while and when he took a break he came out and chatted with me for like 30 minutes. Was just me him and my friend Rick bullshitting with JP about all kinds of stuff... coolest cat ever. While we chatted he cut open an avocado and ate it with a spoon right out of the rind. We talked about sticks and heads , the Riley books, touring, we talked about bands like Fugazi and Bad Brains etc etc ... he was playing the old Slingerland at the time but he had what I think was a newer low end Gretsch kit set up in the trailer as a practice kit. Super great memory... your stories sparked for me. I love everything Clutch has ever touched but Blast Tyrant and Robot Hive in my opinion are the best things they've ever done. Thank you for this incredible video.
