Evil Woman was a cover which was originally only included on the UK release. The first song written by the band, "Wicked "World" was included on the US album version, and is a much better example of Ward's innovative drumming. Will you be including a reaction to "Wicked World"?

He's doing them all I believe and he's gonna be shocked again by the drumming in that song but this is something I never knew being a huge Sabbath fan. Idk how I never came across this song or information about the UK release but upon first listen.... fantastic. I love hearing then do a cover because they started off covering jazz at gigs so it's nice to hear them play someone else's stuff

Evil Woman sound like a studio outtake. The side 2 of North American version start with Wicked World, a song that perfectly fit with the dark mood of this album.

He basically invented that rhythm bass sound. He was a guitar player who took up bass for this band. That’s where that style comes from. Steve Harris of Iron Maiden would not exist as we know him today without Geezer, just to mention one name, there are thousands.

Black Sabbath are the groove masters. OH, Thanks for pointing out it's a shuffle. I honestly forgot about this song. The chorus sounds like a 60's pop song by the Monkees for a second, then they Black Sabbath it again. So badass. As a bass player, Geezer is the starting point.

I discovered them only 5 years ago, after a life of all kinds of music. Now i can say: The first five Sabbath's album are milestones. All the rock music written after 1970/1975 Sabbath's Golden period has been heavily influenced by them. WARD/BUTLER/IOMMI/OZZY.

If memory serves, I believe this song was recorded in a prior session before the album, with the idea of being released as a single. I haven't looked this up in a while, so I could have the details wrong, but I believe the UK record label rejected it as a single release but jammed it onto the record against the band's wishes. In the US, the label didn't have any association with the Evil Woman recording, so they left it off the record as Black Sabbath intended. Anyway, it makes this a cool snapshot of the genesis of the band. I think it does fit with this record as the whole album is the story of how Black Sabbath evolved from dirty blues into the metal genre they created. Their second record, Paranoid, was released just a year later and it has a cohesiveness that the debut doesn't. The next year's Master of Reality is where I would argue the band completed that transition, where their music became blues-influenced rather than being blues-based, and where heavy metal truly became a distinct genre.

This is their first album man, they’re essentially a blues rock band like Led Zeppelin or their contemporaries. Wait until you go through master of reality or volume 4 like this, or sabbath bloody sabbath, the evolution is extraordinary.

This track was not on the original recording. The record company thought it was a potential hit but the band felt it didn't fit the rest of the album. The U.S. release had "WickedWorld" instead, which ironically had a touch of jazz to it.

I get you with the up beat/pop like style of the song...you should definitely check out the 3rd studio album "Master of Reality" released in the summer of 1971...this was (in my opinion) the real game changer. Yeah , it's an eclectic mix this album . A bit of a taster of future doom .( good doom) Our daft UK version has this cover . Other country's got Wicked World a much more representative song . But it's all history now .. I only listen to NIB and Black Sabbath from this recording and from Paranoid onwards I do the whole album. Even though its a cover and not my favourite song it's still Sabbaths beginnings . Peace and love brother ✌ 💚

The unexpected. I think describes it well. Listening to it for the 1st time: almost every song has a different vibe. And I can't think of any other song that has the bass so prominent. The loudest instrument throughout the whole song. All others seem to be turned down in their volume. Anybody: do you have another example of this?

The band did not like this song, they were forced to record it at the record companies request. It should not be included here. As previously stated the first song on the B side should be Wicked World. The final 3 songs are one track and should not be broken up.

I agree the drums mixing is not as prominent on this track. Drum wise it's not the most exuberant or interesting. On this track it's the bass that sticks out from the rythm section.

This was the "we need a single lads" released 9th Jan 1970 Wicked World was the B side but was not used on the original UK album release, however it did replace this track on the US released 1st June 1970. The album was released Friday 13th Feb '70 (probably just a coincidence) stayed in the charts for 6 weeks reaching No.8 in UK, in Oz and a healthy 23 in US. The music press universally hated them. Their first radio play was a session for John Peel's (who else?!) Top Gear (BBC Radio 1) 29th Nov 1969 recorded 5 days before the album was recorded.
