The best thing about bonham and frankly all the guys in Zeppelin is they understood the song came first, and that they were a band. Jimmy was the mastermind and producer and wanted a band. Other groups with a virtuoso guitarist at the time were platforms for the guitarist. Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jeff Beck Group etc. Led Zeppelin were a band where every member was essential for its success

I’ve always loved the shifting dynamics in this song. The acoustic guitar and vocals in the “quieter” parts are haunting, and when the drums and bass and electric guitar come in it just explodes. Really gives the feeling of someone working through an emotional decision. Killer track.

This track is indispensable to me. Right after Good Times Bad Times and right before You Shook Me. The same way I've done it hundreds of times, meaning that's all we had back in the day outside of FM, turntables and albums. That's just how old I am. There's almost never a filler from Zeppelin, right? But there's a lot of twists and turns on the first album.

The BEST the about Bonzo is his musicality and dedication to the song. He often underplays because its what’s called for. I think you might like his support to Page during their live version of No Quarter off the Soung Remains the Same album. Page is noodling a jazzy semi improvised solo and Bonham is being the glue whilst trying to anticipate what comes next.

He doesn’t seem to get as frantic on acoustic. There are spots in his electric use that he seems to almost trip over himself in a rush to get it all out of his head. It’s like there is too much music in him when he’s plugged in, as if it’s amplified or something.

OMG how many musicians could have elevated themselves via a little more restraint. Sometimes excess is just that. It’s not artistry. In Bonham’s case, he was so much more than theatrics. He was…amazing

Plant used restraint to his advantage as well. He regularly stops singing for effect allowing others in the band to shine. These legendary men shared the spotlight in the most fraternal way possible. Greater than the sum of its parts, Led Zep survives the ages like no other.

I love this song -- easily in my top ten favourite Zeppelin tunes. I've always been drawn to the vocals and the acoustic guitar on this track, but it's the 'light and the dark' aspect of the song that really elevates it. It also absolutely blows my mind that both Plant and Bonham were barely 20 when they recorded it. There is such a maturity in their performance that belies their youth. Amazing track.

I never thought about it until I heard you mentioning it in other videos including this one: Bonham's musicality is really what separates him from other drummers for me. His drumming complements his band mates perfectly but even on its own, Bonham's drumming works as isolated works of art as well.

I understand your "surprise" at the drum part and Bonham's restraint, but for me personally one of the things I like most about Zeppelin is that although they defiantly had their "sound" not all their songs sounded the same. I think it's one of their greatest strengths and gifts to us. Even though their first album had a heavy Blues influence they refused to be limited and put in a box. Your surprise is a perfect example of that quality. As young as they were, from day one they were fearless accomplished musicians who had studied their craft and paid their dues. They had a vision and they went for it! We who were there were just lucky enough they took us along on the ride.

One of my favourite tracks as it shows just how restrained Bonzo could be and what a phenomenally tight rhythm section Bonzo and JPJ were - as a live track it made your heart flutter when the drum/bass refrain hit. Magic days for a teenager in love with the blues, jazz and rock, Led Zep offered it all and I, for one, lapped it up (God, I wish I was I was 15 again!).

It's such a subdued song from Bonzo for so long, so it makes the expected explosion so much more dramatic when it finally drops. That's one of the things in Zep. Everyone always gets their turn, it's not about the individual ego, always about the song. You get those timing shifts and phrasing shifts and suddenly it's almost a different song, featuring different people, yet it still creates a harmonious whole. Especially in their earlier work, you really feel like you're listening to music where suddenly there's a stage director who moves the spotlight between band members.

I'm really surprised you've never heard this before. I wore this LP out when it was first released...had to replace it in the end. This album formed the basis of my early drumming and stayed with me until I gave it all away after 18 years. I even bought a Ludwig Pro Beat kit in 1973 and used Speed King's from then on because of you-know-who.

Part of the miracle of Led Zep was that their albums almost always played out the same way: The "hit", the blues song, the "classic", and the "lighter side". Much of what passed for rock was in fact just better produced blues. This song is actually a 1950s song by Anne Bredon and performed by Joan Baez of the same name. Zep were never shy to borrow outright, at least in this case they gave Anne Bredon a credit.

Just wanted to say that I really love your channel and these reaction videos. I'm not even a drummer myself, but I greatly appreciate so many rock drummers, even moreso now that I get to see how a real drummer listens to it and notices things that I as a not-drummer could easily miss. Keep 'em coming! EDIT: I wanted to add that this song is one I've been listening to for over 30 years now, so I know it well. It was one of the earliest Led Zep songs I heard, and very impactful, just with its emotional intensity coupled with, as you say, a simplicity to it. I really appreciated your observation at how sometimes the best thing to do for a drummer, well, any musician actually, is simply to do as little as needed to make the other musicians in the band sound great. I'm amazed to see someone who'd never heard this song before pick up on that right away!

John Bonham always played exactly what the track needed - he did not think like a drummer, but like a musician - he enhances the songs - it’s why the band retired when he died. Without a doubt one of the most musical drummers in history - like Ringo Starr. What a great song - still gives me chills.

Hey Andy, to answer your question, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is in my top 10 favorite LZ songs. The feel and emotion of this song, the musicality, is breathtaking. You should give it another listen on your own, since I think you also stopped the song before it was over....lol...the drums were done, but the song ends with a beautiful soft landing. The sound sonic quality of the recording you are hearing is because Good Times Bad Times was a 1993 remaster and this one is a remaster from a few years ago. Drumeo must be pulling from different remasters, but it is all good! :) This first album deep dive journey will offer you more textures and sounds as you go along. That's what makes LZ special to listen to, album to album, track by track. Never know what to expect, since they were inspired by many musical influences. This one, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, was inspired by their love of folk music, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell, among others.

I remember on first listen back in '69 being shocked at the clarity of the sound in sections of this track compared to the others. I wonder if the original mix was just different in order to bring out the tenderness of the acoustic guitar when it's the focus of the tune. When it's just playing rhythm in the louder parts, it sounds more "overproduced," like many other tunes on the album. Another great vid!

There isn't any such thing as a bad LZ song. They each and all have their own character, which speaks to the virtuosity of the band. There is no one song I could call typical of LZ and they loved to mix up the styles of the songs on any given album. LZ I and LZ III, I always feel are the most under appreciated albums, but LZ I especially was when they were laying down their marker to their audience that this is what you can expect from us, now and moving forward. Boy, were they true to their word on that one. I saw something the other day on another YT channel where someone described LZ as being "metal", I haven't the faintest idea why they thought that and the same of Sabbath. Neither band was metal, in fact it is probably the last tag you could hang on either band.

I agree that Bonham's playing does seem to this non musician, but rabid fan, not his usual controlled chaos. But keep in mind all four of them are virtuosos and so let's just say that this guy, (non-drummer), really didn't notice John's stepped back role. I may have some bad news for you Andrew. This album especially is very bluesy and tomorrow's song, which you've already heard by now, is not going to thrill you either...unless you shift your focus Robert's voice which steals the song imo. Might be a rough week for ya. Especially if you cut the song off before it's done like you did here while Mr. Plant was doing his thing. I forget if it was Robert or Jimmy (perhaps both) who said (paraphrasing) that a lot of Bonzo's power came in what he *didn't* play, which I'm sure you understand. It was Jimmy's band, however, it took into account everyone's input for the sake of the music. Bonzo had the talent and ability to not only go ham but to tap into moments of restraint, delicacy, intricacy, improvisation, etc., whatever was going to be necessary for the song. In my opinion, anyone who thinks of Zep as nothing more than loud, thunderous bashing doesn't get it.

This is definitely the original session recording of the first album. It is not a remaster. This album has always been my fav LZ album. (Close second being LZ IV.) This song shows Jimmy Page's idea of "light and shade". Around 6:00 you comment on this drumming being standard for the time, but as you noted, things pick up as the song's tempo and intensity move up and down. This song features Page's acoustic guitar virtuosity. IMHO, this is in the top 10-15, or so, of LZ songs, but maybe only number 4 or 5 on this album alone. As a non-musician I probably don't get the subtleties of the different parts, chord progressions, etc. It's how the the whole piece comes together: melody, arrangement, featured instruments, vocals, and just general ability to pull the listener into the moment. This song fits the bill. Not as dynamic as Dazed and Confused, or How Many More Times, but not bad at all. This album must have blown people's head off when they first put it on a turntable back in 1968. Even with the likes of Cream, Hendrix, The Who, Stones, Beatles, Doors, there was nothing quite like this.

Mr Rooney I had a question for you sir do you have an extra practice pad LOL someone stole mine the other day when I was on the bus and it had my new sticks in there. Just asking you don't have to do anything I would just thought I would ask I know you live in Oakland New Zealand I live in St Petersburg Florida and the United States. I still practice even though I don't have a drum set I still try to keep my arms strong and beats going I just can't afford anything right now and I haven't been able to do it over the years anyways because I take care of my mother I have house payments it sucks I love drumming so much I was in a terrible car accident and I lost some of the memory of drumming it's not a joke. They said over the years it might come back but it's going to take a very long time and I'm a type of person that likes speed double bass I can slow myself down. I like that drum pad you have there it's a nice blue. But if I were to do a Led Zeppelin song I would try to do Moby Dick. I was introduced to Led Zeppelin When I was a young boy. I've been listening to rock classic rock Rush Zeppelin Pink Floyd a young age. I wonder if you can do Moby Dick one day. Just talk about the song itself and the drum parts sorry I haven't been on lately. I've not been on KZbin I've been very depressed so I'm trying to get myself better you can always do better in life. This is a track from the debut album from a group that changed music forever! I’d struggle sleeping at night if I called myself a professional drama or drum teacher or had a KZbin channel analysing drum performances, yet hadn’t heard this before. We all can’t know everything, BUT….. we do need to know the basics. This most certainly includes all the music of Led Zeppelin. It a prerequisite in terms of history and knowledge. Anyway, it’s also a cover of a cover too by the way.
