Hi there and thanks for picking one of my videos! This is however perhaps the oddest choice to get to know Pain of Salvation’s music and I’d recommend to check songs like WAIT for instance, there’s a playthrough out there too. Now for the chorus section that you were wondering, it’s a 5/4 with accents every 5th 16th notes on the bass drum. The entire song is in 5/4 actually, and there’s a whole thing with triplets, quintuplets, sextuplets and 4 against 3’s going on throughout the songs, but it’s fairly subtle and almost hard to perceive :)

Hey Andrew, love the channel! Finally one I can help on: the section at 03:10 is ten bars of 4/4, but with a strong 5 against 4 modulation. The crash is keeping 4/4 quarter notes while the kick, snare and vocal heavily emphasise every fifth 16th note. You can hear the high piano part that comes in during the second half (03:22) emphasising this 5/16ths cycle. Pain Of Salvation play with 5s and 7s in a 16th note 4/4 context quite a lot. Check out On A Tuesday, the opening track from the album In The Passing Light Of Day, for a cool example using 7s. Keep up the great work and cheers from London!

I've seen it transcribed as the opposite: 5/4 but with four cycles of 5 16th notes... so I guess that would be a 4 against 5? Otherwise, you're having to do a tempo modulation for it to be in 4/4. But yeah, Daniel Gildenlow likes to compose these pieces with what he likes to call "three-dimensional rhythms" all the time. It's one of their defining features, if you ask me. Another great example would be "Handful of Nothing" with what I like to call the "reducing" rhythm... it's... intricate! :P

@@lauscho Yeah, that's a very good point! With your perspective and another listen, I would add to my previous comment that if we assume counting quarter notes at 130bpm all the way through probably makes the most sense (totally agree with you there!), it's a 5/16ths ostinato within 5/4. I still feel it as 5 against 4 though, because the 5/16s are happening against a really strong quarter note pulse. It would have the same effect in 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 7/4...whatever, because that quarter note feels really grounded and the 16th notes are going by pretty quickly. Very cool effect regardless of what the mathematics say :-)

I found his double pedal patterns a refreshing change from the barrage of continuous bass drum rolls so often heard. To me it had the same effect as ghost notes on the snare in propelling the groove. It wasn't in your face, which may be why some people aren't keen on it. But I found it to be a very musical way of playing. And the polyrhythmic sections are just long enough to create tension and end up with a satisfying release on the return to the original groove. It's also interesting how he achieves a heavier feel by subtracting notes on the bass drum, reducing it to the basic rhythm. Usually one associates intensity with denser playing but here he shows how the reverse can achieve the same effect. A real drum lesson for me. Thanks Andrew.

The "Live that you might find the answers..." section is in 5/4. But the vocal and musical accents happen every 5 16th notes. So the ride is keeping the beat every 4 eighth notes 5 times, and the vocals are every 5 eights notes 4 times, and it syncopates on top of each other.

Leo is fucking great. I'm lucky enough to have seen them live three times so far and he's phenomenal. Pain of Salvation really like their syncopated and odd drums. I've listened to their song Rope Ends maybe a few hundred times by now and I still can't pinpoint what the hell is going on with the drums during the intro riff.

ACCELERATOR off their new record is also a bear as far as "wait, where's the 1" (and it's probably like several of their songs in the answer depends on what instrument you're asking). Of course if you want some really outside polymeter/rhythms, check out Panzerballet's cover of "take five"

Exceptional band and a phenomenal drummer, but Fandango is perhaps a bit weird as a starting point, even though the Remedy Lane album is fantastic as a whole. i always thought Remedy Lane was their absolute high point and nothing else of them could even compare to it. maybe because it seemed to be a very personal record. Those usually are the best. haven't been following them for the past couple of years, the band seemed to hire and fire a lot of members

@@steve.hoffman Also my favorite band. And one of my favorite memories was finally seeing them live, and I had a VIP pass for a meet and greet. But it was a rough show. One of the openers had a bunch of technical difficulties, and Daniel was performing while sick, and wouldn't be at the meet and greet. The show ran long, and the venue cut the power to their amps. But Daniel, even while sick, stayed on stage to finish the encore without amps. He just turned himself up to 11 and finished the show.

Someone please request that he review Leo Margarit doing "Handful of Nothing." I love Fandango. It's an amazing song. But from the perspective of drumming, it's a bit of a snooze. Leo's new video jamming to Handful of Nothing is perfection. And if that isn't good enough, he also has "On a Tuesday" out. ...I'd request them, but I'm a poor schlub.

My all time favorite band. each (concept) album takes you on a completely different journey. From multi-layered distortion-heavy technical tracks to stripped down 70's style bluesy rock, to fully orchestrated rock opera, to experimental industrial-infused electronic effects - These guys do it all. And unlike some bands, the extreme technical prowess always takes a back seat to the melody and the amazing lyrics (Daniel Gildenlow is probably the best song lyrics writer alive today in any genre, I mean it). This specific song choice is unfortunate in my taste, one of the weirder experimental tracks in my opinion. You should check out the new fantastic WAIT from the PANTHER album, also available in this playthrough format - a perfect blend of heart-scathing ballade and quiet technical mastery. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHXdo5qijr6JrK8

I personally preferred Johan. The singer Daniel Gildenlow writes most of the music and parts. Do Nightmist from their live dvd, such a great drum part and Johan kills it! I've seen them and met them 3 times with the main lineup on their first albums. Saw them once with Leo. I personally thought they were better with Johan on drums and Daniel's brother Kristoffer on bass. I was glad Johan came back on guitars.
