Pain of Salvation’s music is so beautiful but usually so tragic. I can only listen when I’m sad, but when I am sad, nothing hits more poignantly.

Since you're American you probably don't know, but Pain of Salvation attempted to represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010 with the song Road Salt. Which means they're probably fans of Eurovision which in turn could mean that the inspiration behind that passage was not Shrek but the 1995 Eurovision winner "Nocturne" from Norway. Check it out and see if you agree.

I just made the same Nocturne comparison before reading this comment. I wonder if Daniel has been inspired by Secret Garden. He's fan of musicals and theatrical music, and I'm thinking it has less to do with Eurovision Song Contest.

The voices sound like the devil and angel on your shoulders. This series has become one of my favorites. Better than Spotify suggestion for newer artists and makes you revisit some artists that you haven't listened to in years. Keep up the good work

Yup, those are #1 and #2 on their best-ever albums in my book too (although which is the top album does change with time...for now I place _In the Passing Light of Day_ above all, because I feel it's a bit more cohesive as a concept album, but it's a near thing).

There's a reason this video focused on the lyrics so much. When I first heard Pain of Salvation over 20 years ago I just hated it, the production, the sounds, the tones, they all sounded awful to me. Fast forward a couple of years later and listened to them again and... Oh my god! The lyrics! Pain of Salvation is an instrument of Daniel Gildenlow's poetry, and his singing is him riciting his poetry like a performer at a theater. And the lyrical themes in his songs and the subjects he tackles are so real and raw, there's nothing pretty about pretty much any of the Pain of Salvation songs, but the emotions are conveyed so clearly and masterfully through Daniel's singing and the band's music that it's just so beautiful. I get asked if I have ever cried listening to a song before, and the answer is yes, plenty of times... Most of those times have been listening to Pain of Salvation. Thank you for this recognition to this once in a humankind music and band.

Lmao!!! I feel like NO ONE would like that song! It's good! But it is corny haha. The music also matches the lyrics extremely well imo. I'm shocked to find someone else who appreciates it. I'm not a regular listener between the trad eastern eur sound and how tough the subject matter is. But it hits hard....undeniably.

I don't even need to watch this to know that EVERYBODY needs to listen to Pain Of Salvation. Not just this song, but all their songs.. Sisters is one of my all time favorite songs by them and is so powerful. Road Salt Pt 1 and 2 was shift in sound for the band and it was a breath of fresh air imo... anyway, I'll now watch your video on my favorite bands!!!! It seems Lefty players just have better taste in music.. Facts- probably!

Fantastic song. I can't say I've ever eyed my wife's sister at a party (i don't have a wife to begin with) but the storytelling is so enthralling I can imagine what it would be like to battle this sort of temptation.

I disagree with OP's tone about this album. Yes, this album marks a departure from what I would call the 3rd iteration of Pain of Salvation's style, but it's definitely good. To know what I consider all itirations of Pain of Salvation at their best I recommend "In the Passing Light of Day" (4th), "BE" (3rd), "The Perfect Element part 1" (2nd) and "One Hour by the Concrete Lake" (1st). And as always, you have to pay attention to the lyrics with Pain of Salvation... It's 80% of the entire point of the songs.

@@orlandogomez1718 Disagreement in quality aside (it's absolutely alright to disagree), yeah lyrics matter a lot. Especially with Remedy Lane (which I think many consider their best album) when there's references to lyrics from previous songs as they build out a full narrative. Hell, some of the lyrics in In The Passing Light Of Day also referenced Remedy Lane. So yeah they're quite self referencial as many of the songs and themes are very very raw and personal to the lead singer whom I armchair-psychologist diagnose as a sex addict almost lol

Your video made me want to dig into this band that I might have heard of but never heard. I saw they go back to 1997, which corresponds to when I was starting to tune out of most new bands big time until I eventually got back to it years later in the late 2000's. In that time I missed a ton of bands worthy of my time, I'm sure. Putting this one on the list. Melodramatic is NOT a turn off to me if it sounds at all earnest, which is what I got from this song.

Had the pleasure of seeing them opening for Opeth a decade ago (around the Road Salt II era), such a great band! They pack quite a punch when it comes to emotional content: there's an acoustic version of the song "Undertow" from the 12:5 concert that waters my eyes every effin' time!

Hey Mike, totally unrelated to the video, but I was wondering if you would consider making a video focusing on Jim Thomas of The Mermen? Very underrated, under appreciated rock / Surf guitarist with a lot of early prog influence. Very skilled and talented player I think you’d appreciate.

Because Gildenlow keeps writing concept albums by accident (his liner notes about the Road Salt Albums) - The entirety of the two Road Salt albums almost *needs* to be listened-to in-full! (Needs to be the 13+14-track extended editions, though!) Several sips and glasses of wine throughout the 27 songs! 🤣

Oh, man, I LOVE this song. SO well written. Certainly among their best, but I wouldn't say it's their absolute best, I think The Passing Light of Day is even more effective, but not quite as well written. Creepy subject matter, though. Can't imagine the conversation with his wife about this song. The production is so wild on this, and what they've done since. I don't always love how it sounds, but I hugely appreciate any attempt to desterilize a production. I can't listen to so much modern metal because of overproduction. Very happy to see someone spotlight it, though, I've always thought this was a special song.

Thank you! I really really really love this album, I think this is their "Damnation". Althought it should be noted that the central melodic theme of this song resemles Secret Garden - Nocturne, besides Shrek. But I think Mr. Gildenlöw give a very personal and PoS-style twist to this musical idea. I love it.

Daniel is clearly the master of turning very raw thoughts and emotions intro beautiful poetry. I don't think any of the big names in the prog world does it as good as Daniel and a HUGE part of Pain Of Salvation are the lyrics. Analize "The Taming of the Beast" I ddint like the song until I read the lyrics and now it's probably one of my favorites.

Since it came out I have felt that this song is a little too close to Secret Garden's "Nocturne" (as is Princess Fiona's song in Shrek). But as the years have passed, the song (and album Road Salt) has really grown on me.

This almost feels like a progressive metal version of Whitney Houston's Saving All My Love For You except this is from the cheating man's pov instead of the side chick's pov, and it's more tragic than "romantic," which makes it feel more honest (which I actually do like)

Not related to the video but i was really excited to see that your band was opening for Tenacious D. I was supposed to be going next Friday to the Auckland show. I feckin adore PoS! Especially everything from Entropia to BE. Still love stuff since, but Scarsick is around when they started shuffling the lineup and things got a little crazy. Daniel Gildenlow is one of my favourite singers. There's more versatility to him then that track highlights, but you gotta be DAMN good to pull off a stripped down dramatic performance like that as well.

Hey I'm here to tell you guys about Jesus Christ. Everyone in the world sins, but through Christ Jesus, who came from heaven, He died on the cross for our sins and took the punishment we deserved for our sins and took on the wrath of God we deserved. He was sinless so he was the perfect offering in order to justify us to the Father in Heaven. Because of this now you can give your sins to Christ and live a new life now In Him and through Him you may bear good deeds for His glory. Growing in relationship with Him and receiving salvation in Him to heaven and not go to hell. God loves yall and cheers 🙌
