This album was self produced, with help from Brendan O’Brien who helped mix Superunknown and wasn’t a “producer” at the time in 1996. The album is disjointed as is reflected by the band’s relationship at the time. I prefer to call it eclectic lol. There’s so much going on musically on this album. SG to me were technically light years ahead of most of those contemporaries.

o_O Well, that was jarring!... Soundgarden are on a very short list of bands whose music I consume in album-sized bites.... so I'm off to listen to the whole thing thru again immediately!! LOL Matt's drumming, Ben's bass work, & Kim's lead guitar, in Soundgarden are all criminally underloved imho. It's understandable when you had the best blues-tinged rock vocalist (certainly since Zep ceased) fronting the thing. Always good to see any of the 3 of them shown some appreciation for their efforts. :)

I had a similar experience with this record. I bought it the week it came out, got into what would end up being the singles, and the harder stuff. I never gave it a chance as a total work until they got back together. Once I gave it a chance, it clicked. It's a great record and as good a follow up to a monster album that could be done. The grunge thing was running its course, and at the time it felt like the band had either lost interest or was just plain exhausted. This might hold the record for me for skipping to the next song after 3 seconds because the opening riff didn't grab me. Yet when you take the time, nearly every song's payoff is so worth the patience. I'm still partial to the two previous albums, but DOTU is very much at the same level. Good stuff. I clicked on specifically because you featured a song from this record.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums All the labels needed to sign their own version of grunge, so it became massively watered down and ended up nothing like the original movement. It's also important to remember- all these bands said it at the time as well- the Seattle scene had been brewing and allowed to breathe well before the hype machine caught onto it. These were bands that had been allowed the space to play in front of 20-30 people in a dank bar while no one else in the world cared. They were able to hone their sound and become a viable unit onstage. SG and Alice in Chains to me have the best catalogs in terms of standing the test of time. But there were a bunch of good bands beyond the big 4 that did some good stuff.

To be fair I don't think there's that much hate, but there is a section of fans that love abbruze more. Personally I think he is PJ's best drummer, and the best drummer of the seattle scene. His performances for soundgarden and on temple of the dog are stellar. Saw PJ both nights at Hyde Park London last month and he was phenomenal. It was ridiculous hot with sun beaming straight at him. He sat there, perfect posture throughout, looking like robocop but with sunglasses on and just playing perfectly and making it look easy. He is like 60 now but he still rocks. On top of all that he has contributed creatively in a way the previous PJ drummers didn't. You are from Riot Act is still a pleasure to listen too and his work on Gigaton was sublime.

Matt Cameron laid down the demos for what would become P.earl Jam; he's the FIRST Pearl Jam drummer, the LONGEST Pearl Jam drummer, and by far the BEST Pearl Jam drummer. None of which means five eighths of fuck all, because Pearl Jam SUCKS SHIT, and SOUNDGARDEN INVENTED MUSIC. Pearl Jam victims: ATTACK ME IF YOU DARE. I WILL CRUSH YOU.

An early favourite of mine and a song I'd forgot about for a while. Hearing it again it's even better than I remembered it. It's once again among my favourites of theirs. Such an awesome track! I love the slow-down especially! It doesn't stop nor start exactly on the split, it carries on through it, dragging on either tempo in such a deliciously judged way. Love that. And that dropped guitar part in the verses, where it just falls instead of carrying on with the riff (makes that part its own related riff). Nice one. :D First time on the channel, bloomin' eck is that Hummer in the outro? It has to be! I love Pumpkins as well! Ah nice.

Check out soundgarden live at Hyde Park 2012. Jimmy Page is standing by the guitar amps jamming, referring to you saying they were the next step after Led Zepplin. Matt Cameron kills it on every Soundgarden song as far as I'm concerned. My reasons for playing drums are Bill Ward, Ginger Baker, Matt Cameron, and Jimmy Chamberlain from Smashing Pumpkins. All of these guys incorporated jazz into rock and roll and did it great! Thanks Andrew.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Nirvana was my least favorite of the big grunge dogs.. STP is technically not a grunge band, bcs that term was coined in Seattle, describing Seattle bands in particular. But, STP was making some great music at the same time and it had that same "Grunge Thing" going on, regardless of where they lived.. Their first two records stand up with all of those bands. But, after a couple records each and a boatload of money, they all started losing the authenticity of the lifestyle that created the genre. It's just not the same when you have to rip holes in your brand new clothes and scuff up your new doc martens to age them.. loll

Matt always makes me think of a mix of Bonham and Ward … more so Ward on the earlier stuff and Bonham later. He’s an excellent player! I agree, Andrew … for me, any Soundgarden up to Badmotorfinger is amazing! Deep Six, and FOPP EP are rawer, looser and less focused, experimenting with their sound. Screaming Life EP is still experimenting but much more focused on the slower heavier Sabbath/late-Black Flag thing they became known for. Ultramega OK is them having found their sound, and working out the details. Louder Than Love and Badmotorfinger are THE Soundgarden … like Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets and … And Justice For All are THE Metallica. Theyre the band that made it famous and are exploring the sound and energy that made them that way. Superunknown is kinda like their black album… still the same band, but theyve moved past the sound that made them famous and are exploring more accessible territory. Down On The Upside was an extension of the direction of the previous, but almost kinda trying to revisit the energy they had prior to it, a great way to go out! Anything after that was good, and had some bright moments, but just wasnt THE Soundgarden.
